I have a playlist on Soundcloud of my own original rock music and I’d love for you to check it out, preferably on some good speakers, up loud. I’m really proud of this, and would love to hear what you think.

If you have “I like music” in your profile, you must listen. It’s the law!! 🫶

Boosts very much appreciated! 🤗

asayakkara,

@dgar Thanks Dgar, for making the fediverse (and the world) a better place! The music is good.

Long night so far.

A call from my sister just after midnight that she’d taken mum to the hospital.

Been holding bedside vigil while sister goes home and gets some sleep. Doctors running tests and whatnot. Morphine for the pain. Machines that go “bing”.

It’s about 4:30am and mum’s snoring with a plethora of tubes and wires.

Eyes are heavy. Chair is uncomfortable. The nurses showed me where I could make a cup of coffee for myself.

asayakkara,

@dgar Sending all the strength to you. Your mom will recover soon, and you all will be having the much needed rest back at home. 🤗

The best part of reaching Sunday is the photo feed. Here's my litttle contribution.

Came home to my parent's house for the weekend. It's a beautiful, warm, and sunny morning here.
I will probably read a book throughout the day.

The mango tree in front of the house is full of fruit. Party time for squirrels and birds.

I wanted a few #Arduino Uno boards to try some gas sensors. Although I had several Arduino boards somewhere in the lab, I couldn't locate them for a while; I have been so messy with my lab management.
Perhaps, this is a good time to consider adapting some proper inventory management strategy.

  1. Cleaned my bicycle and had a short trip — of about 7km — in the neighborhood. It's been a while since I rode my bicycle.

  2. Read a lot for a day.

  3. Checked out most of the items in my ToDo list for today. There are things that I couldn't do, but I'm already happy, and that's what really matters.

    @jonobie I do the same. My attention is a scarse resource; the apps that misuse this resource are stripped of notification privilege.

    1. Traveled to my home town to spend the holidays with my parents and younger brother.

    2. We managed to find a PickMe taxi from the town to home; it's cheaper and convenient that typical taxis.

    3. I was reading a book throughout the evening while sitting in the veranda and walking through the garden.

    Another view of the veranda of my parent's house as seen from inside. There is a short wooden gate. Three wooden chairs are placed inside with cushions. Different pots of plants are visible. Far away, there are various tall and short trees in the background.

    1. The holidays started from today. I have about one week out of work.

    2. I had a long nap during the day time. It's been a while since I had a chance to sleep during the day.

    3. I finished reading the novel "Seven Moons of Maali Almeida" written by Shehan Karunatilaka. It's the 2022 Booker Prize winning book.

    asayakkara,

    @boud @tiago @LukasBrausch @academicchatter As the article says, if they are going to implement it as an opt-in feature to prevent quoting without consent, I'm happy with that.

    asayakkara,

    @tiago @ChrisWilms23 @crecente @boud @LukasBrausch @academicchatter
    If this is what you have been talking about all this time, I have no problem with it; it's a client-side feature that you need.
    But, Twitter's quoting functionality notifies the original tweet owner, that can be exploited (and people did) as a tool of aggression.

    I just now noticed that your original toot mentions "ordered timeline" as a bad thing as well. You are missing the whole point of Mastodon's existance.

    asayakkara,

    @ml @tiago @academicchatter
    This is how I see it on "Tusky" app on Android.

    asayakkara,

    @ml @tiago @academicchatter
    I think, those who are asking for a quoting feature are not happy that the original tooter is not notified about being quoted/linked in this way.

    asayakkara,

    @tiago @academicchatter
    On "Tusky" app, when I click on that quote/link toot of @ml, it opens the original toot just like how Twitter app would open a quote tweet; I don't notice that the original toot is coming from an entirely different server. It's a client side feature, and we have plenty of client apps to choose from. The default Mastodon web interface is just one option.

    That's the beauty of this whole thing, in my view.

    Anyway, I spent too much time on this point. Have a nice day 😊

    Just like there are many apps to use , are there apps to use ?

    I've created an account at @ramblingreaders , but still figuring out how to use it other than on the web browser.

    asayakkara,

    @ramblingreaders Thanks! 😊

    So, I finally ditched my personal academic website in Wordpress, which was too costly to me, and wrote my own website from scratch using pure HTML. Now it's hosted in Github Pages with a custom domain name. I feel like now I have more control on the website than when I was relying on a big content management system.

    is becoming my default drawing tool for diagrams in lecture slides and also for blog articles. The only missing piece so far seems to be the lack of support for writing equations. I'd love to have math equation formatting in my diagrams.

    Marianne North traveled to 6 continents & 17 countries, painting exotic plants in remote & hazardous jungles… all while traveling alone in Victorian dress in the 1800s.

    North depicted over 1,000 scientifically accurate pitcher plants, orchids, ferns & more. Her oil paintings introduced botanists to multiple previously unidentified species & several are named after her.

    Her art has its own gallery at Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. https://artsandculture.google.com/story/marianne-north-an-unsung-pioneer-of-botanical-art-kew-royal-botanic-gardens/OQVB7c9EslEtHQ?hl=en

    asayakkara,

    @Sheril The picture of her in Ceylon — the modern-day Sri Lanka — made me curious to read more about her; because, I'm from the same place. 😊
