Our 2024 Newsroom Fellowship is fully funded thanks to you and a commitment from LION Publishers!🥳

Why does this matter? Because audience donations make up 30% of our revenue. It’s simple: without you, we don’t exist. And with your support, we can do more essential reporting.

But we’re not done yet. The national funders behind NewsMatch have given us one more challenge: Can you help us reach another $1,000 by midnight TONIGHT?

Why has nobody talked about Little Rock, AR straight-up demolishing the I-30 Cloverleaf Interchange, freeing up blocks of walkable, streetcar-accessible parcels downtown? (April 2019 vs. December 2023)

What does that say about other cities that claim that this is impossible?

BREAKING via Bryan L. Sells: The 11th Circuit reverses a decision that struck down the at-large method of electing members of the Public Service Commission. The court holds that GA's choice of at-large elections overrides the Voting Rights Act because of federalism concerns.

Georgia, a majority-minority state, has never elected a single non-white Public Service Commissioner in its entire history, due to its at-large election method.

Did you know that a 22-year-old Latina is now taking over a local newspaper in Georgia?

Meet Andrea Gutierrez. Last week, she was named Editor of Bryan County News, after her predecessor retired.

Bryan County is located in Coastal Georgia, one county away from Savannah. It has around 45,000 residents and voted for Trump by 35 points in 2020.

This is what Richmond Hill, where BCN is headquartered, looked like when I reported there in 2021. It's beautiful.

Andrea grew up in Savannah and then went to UGA Grady, where she was the campus NAHJ chapter chair.

While a journalism student, she and her classmates helped save another local rural newspaper in Lexington, the Oglethorpe Echo. Here's @niemanlab's report of their work:

I got to know Andrea when she was a finalist for @thexylom's Newsroom Fellowship. I was impressed by her commitment to her local bilingual public health coverage. I wish we had more funding to hire her but imagine my joy when I found out about this next step in her career.

A Medill Local News Initiative report released today found that HALF of all U.S. counties do not have access to reliable local news.

Keeping the lights on is already a miracle. Now, Andrea has to bring the paper into the 21st century and broaden the audience. Not easy! However, I know that Bryan County News is in good hands. There is no better person for the job.

@thexylom will be supporting their local coverage through reporting and syndication partnerships.

Today, award-winning incarcerated journalist Christopher Blackwell announces that all his life's work has been wiped out by the prison communications company Securus.

I was the judge who selected Chris for his INN Nonprofit News Award this year. To know that one business profiting off incarcerated folks could decide to wipe out a respected journalist's lifelong work is infuriating. This is a shameful assault on freedom of the press
