Awesome idea, stolen from Imgur (looks like it was stolen from Tumblr before that):

Woedenaz,

@beeoproblem @Taffer that's exactly the game I thought of when I read this.

If you have #dyslexia , do alternative fonts in apps help with the reading experience?

If yes, are Atkinson Hyperlegible or OpenDyslexic useful fonts to use with #Tusky? Are there others (that are freely redistributable).

The attached screenshots show what this would look like.

Please boost for reach.

Woedenaz,

@Tusky honestly, I just like Atkinson Hyperlegible in general. It's a really nice font. I just wish it was a variable font with more style options. But I know a crazy amount of work went into making it, so I won't complain (too much.)

Free Faces: https://www.freefaces.gallery/
A repository of free fonts you can use for personal and commercial projects, categorized by type (cursive, display, monospace, etc.)

Woedenaz,

@stephaniewalter Wow... this is beautiful.

Microsoft ❓ Activision

Can anyone explain to me what the story is with these two companies?

I'll be honest, I love Microsoft for various reasons, its technology stack has fed me for many years. I still use their products.

But I hate Activision for various reasons, and it is not clear to me whether this story is in a positive direction or not 🧐

video/mp4

Woedenaz,

@maxim Essentially, Activision/Blizzard is being bought by Microsoft. Outright. It's really as simple as that.

The complex part comes with how this further consolidates an industry that's becoming more and more consolidated. The FTC sued because they felt this sort of massive acquisition would stifle competition, particularly with how many multi-platform games Activision has which would likely become Microsoft-platform exclusive.

Woedenaz,

@maxim Yeah, probably not entirely. The name will still exist. Microsoft will completely own them, though. So it will effectively just become a name, I believe.

I don't think it will be quite like the other studios that Microsoft has bought, like Double Fine, where they're entirely left to their own devices.

  • Woedenaz,

@BaldSavant This just highlights how much current Nintendo's stance on storytelling infuriates me. There is so much potential. SO MUCH.

If they just gave the bones of the story over to an actual author (or team of authors) I am confident we'd see something far better written.

They utilize these super weird concepts of time travel and alternate timelines but refuse to do anything interesting with it.

It's what made me stop playing Zelda games for a while after Skyward Sword, until BotW.

    Woedenaz,

@BaldSavant I kind of feel like current From Soft might be sorta heading in that direction? At the very least, Elden Ring felt like Breath of the Wild but they actually cared about telling a story and giving the world history and depth.

My issue with BotW/TotK is that it all feels very surface level. Like, they have all these places named after past Zelda characters, even ones from Link's Awakening, and it's never really explained why. And I doubt there actually is a why, not a good one.

    Woedenaz,

@BaldSavant Hmm, let's have it be as approachable as the Spider-Verse movies and then we're cooking.

    Woedenaz,

@BaldSavant Don't get me wrong, I love (most) Pixar movies! I just think games can definitely push the boundaries even more than that and get away with it.

    Woedenaz,

@BaldSavant Got it. Totally agreed. It's exciting to think about how extremely new Video Games still are as an artistic medium that there's still so much potential growth in what they're capable of.

    Woedenaz,

@maxim I see stuff like this and my immediate thought is "Oh, that's a reasonably okay looking shortcut for small devs to save some time."

But then realize that, instead, stuff like this will be used by big developers and publishers to go "oh, we don't actually need to hire in-between animators."

Granted, this is for pixel art which is less common in bigger budget games.

    Woedenaz,

@maxim I don't necessarily dislike the sorta pseudo-pixel art 3D model look, truthfully. Like Dead Cells uses 3D to pixel art and I enjoy the aesthetic. Still, nothing will ever really top true, high-quality, fully animated pixel art, though. I'll take Blasphemous over Dead Cells any day of the week (Visually, at least. Blasphemous kicks my ass gameplay-wise.)

    Woedenaz,

@maxim It really is incredible. I remember reading an article some time ago about how the skill of Pixel Art was slowly being lost from its hayday of the late 90s.

It's really great to see indie devs pick up the mantle and keep it alive. Games like Blasphemous, Hyper Light Drifter, and Sword And Sworcery come to mind.

@maxim Nice! I actually still use my Steam Link and Steam Controller. I'd absolutely love if they made a new version of the Steam Controller with a higher build quality. I'd buy that baby day 1

    @aeva@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

there's a poll going around that shows that mastodon is full of only old people but I would like to point out that mastodon is also likely full of people who habitually lied about their age to hang out online when they were minors so who can really say what's real here

    Woedenaz, (edited )

@aeva I've never lied myself but I've been on the internet a LONG time. When I was 14, my main activity was arguing Zelda timeline theories on the Zelda Universe forum and making my own Zelda website, Zelda Informer, with friends when I was 16.

Never bothered lying about my age and no one really seemed to care at the time. I just thought it was cool that I was 16 and helped make a whole website. (Which quickly went to shit but we don't talk about that...)

    Woedenaz,

    @aeva LOL
true. Would be a really weirdly specific thing to lie about.

I also owned a Kaioken Goku cToon on Cartoon Orbit when I was 11.

    Do you believe me now??

24h later, Threads is at 50m, five times all of Mastodon.

It took some effort following people but honestly threads is pretty great, at least as far as user experience. Very very very much feels like Twitter used to, in a good way.

Yes Facebook is evil, Zuck sucks, etc etc. Honestly it's a pretty low bar but just having him not be a right-wing transphobic shitstain is an improvement.

And the vibe over there is very much "this feels like Twitter when I liked it, Musk is screwed"

    Woedenaz,

@actsukrit The main thing that could happen is those people moving to Threads and no longer being active here. That would suck.

I'd really rather not interact with anything Meta owned if I don't have to. Would suck to have to tie myself to them just to talk to certain people.

    Woedenaz,

@actsukrit I hope you're right! That does seem to be the case so far, at least. If Threads actually becomes functional, though, who knows.
