ChatGPT is down, wonder how many "now with AI!" integrations just got broken. Logitech was stuffing OpenAI stuff into its mouse drivers last time I looked so I imagine the blast radius here might be substantial.

Why do software and hardware engineers keep adding needless single points of failure to everything?

A few weeks ago, a bunch of Tablos (broadcast TV DVR) stopped working because the remote server crashed.

No one could even watch the local programming received by their local antenna.

It's just plain bad design.

    Since 2018, Netflix has raised prices on its most popular plans by around 50%, with the Standard plan increasing from $10.99 to $15.49 per month, and the Premium plan going from $13.99 to $22.99 per month.

    At what point does Netflix stop gouging its customers?

    How high does the price have to rise for consumers to stop taking it?

    By the way, Voyager 1 is back online, sending engineering status data. Next step, getting the science data going again. Every time I think about the Voyagers I can't help but smile. Damn NASA/JPL, et al. knew how to build good stuff back then. And the best use of plutonium ever.

    @lauren I don't remember how old I was when that movie came out, but it might be the first one I remember seeing in a theater.

    I also remember "incredible shrinking woman", not sure which was released first, but I think Star Trek.

    Anyway for my part, I always loved that movie and still do, and I hope to someday see it on the big screen again. It feels like it was made for a big screen, moreso than most movies.

    I think Biden was trying to gain support among non-Trump Christians under the premise that Christians like to support Israel.

    But any Christian who does not see genocide as evil is not worth pandering to under any circumstances.

    It's easy to let the ends justify the means, but when the means are allowing genocide to happen, the ends are never worth it.

    I wish more politicians understood that. US also was late to understand that in WW2.

    Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

    White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

    They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

    1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

    2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

    I'm white but with four (one deceased) younger brothers who are Black. They are adopted, started as emergency foster care children. That itself I have come to believe is a debate that needs to be had but I'll discuss that at the end of my 🧵 reply.

    Having Black siblings certainly gives me a somewhat unique perspective amongst white people, but even when young before they were part of the family, I saw the need for it first hand.

    #uspolitics This will really tick some people off but as things stand right now, I will not be voting for Joe Biden in 2024.

    I believe that in a Democracy, my vote is my voice and I have a responsibility to vote for a candidate that represents me.

    I can not vote for a President (or any other politician) who sends arms of any kind, let alone weapons of mass destruction, to a country that is attempting genocide against another people and right now, that is exactly what Joe Biden is doing.

    MOST IMPORTANTLY, the CDC has no report on “Long Flu.” But the CDC reports that 6.8% of adults (equal to 17.5 million people) are currently experiencing Long COVID symptoms.

    You get the flu around once a decade. People are being reinfected with COVID around once a year. Please take care!

    @augieray The report of 6.8% of adults experiencing long-covid is likely low, and whether or not it is low, it is disproportionate---it's higher for those in poverty, it's higher for those with disabilities, and it's higher for non-white demographics.

    #CDC is only taking White Anglo-Saxon Protestants into consideration.

    @fulelo I'm not Arab, just to be clear, but one point that absolutely can not be ignored: In 2016, the larger Arab community did not vote for Trump but they also did not vote for Hillary. In 2020, they came out strong for Biden and Biden won---barely.

    Why should they come out strong for Biden again when Biden is giving financial and military aid to a country committing genocide against an Arab people?

    I certainly wouldn't, and I won't despite not being Arab myself.

    In academic UNIX history, it was common to abbreviate long but frequently used words by taking the first and last letter and then putting a number between them, representing the number of letters between them.

    Another example - i18n = internationalization.

    Tech companies peddle the mythology of "culture" to convince employees that work should be the centre of their lives. It's a tactic to extract more value at the cost of work-life balance and emotional well-being ~outside the office.

    And far too often, when you put a toe out of line, "culture" becomes a baseball bat that'll beat you right back into your place.
