These are surprising stats I just came across: According to the financial website WalletHub, the state of New Jersey is the 5th Happiest State in America. Here are the top 5 happiest states (I don't know what the criteria is for "happiness" that WalletHub uses):

  1. Utah (all those happy Mormons?)
  2. Hawaii (obvious)
  3. Maryland (my home state)
  4. Minnesota (you betcha!)
  5. New Jersey ('lots of great Italian food???)

I note that these are primarily Blue states that have high local tax rates.

I was just thinking that when a fall guy does prison time for following the direction of the mob boss, if the mob boss is later convicted for the related crime in question shouldn’t the mob boss do AT LEAST the same amount of prison time as the fall guy did? Michael Cohen did 3 years in prison at Otisville, NY. Why shouldn’t Trump be sentenced the same amount of time, especially since he’s shown no remorse, has several other indictments pending and showed utter contempt for the judge and jury?

So pleased that Rep. Andy Kim won the Democratic Senate primary in New Jersey tonight! I first noticed him when I saw that he was one of the only members of Congress who stayed behind to clean up the Capitol building the day after the Jan. 6th insurrection. Wearing a mask, Kim was on his knees sweeping up the shattered glass and other debris on the floors beneath the Capitol dome. We need more people like him and fewer like MTG.

There shouldn’t be an audience at the upcoming presidential debates. An audience only encourages a performative experience, mainly consisting of Trump baiting the audience with outrageous or bombastic quips. The mics should also cut off when time limits are up and whenever the other candidate is speaking. This would prevent interruptions and might force the speakers to be more pointed and concise. My two cents worth. But the debate organizers aren’t listening to me. #debates

I was just thinking that there wouldn't be all of these abortion bans popping up all over the South and parts of the Midwest if Hillary had won the Electoral College in 2016. She would have appointed Supreme Court Justices that would have upheld Roe v. Wade. Just think of all of the women whose lives would have been saved. #electoralcollegesucks

I feel like I’m watching the death of democracy by a thousand little cuts. We can’t perceive it, because it’s happening so gradually and insidiously and the blood letting only seems to require little band-aids initially — until when it’s too late, and democracy’s on life support. Continuing the analogy, there desperately needs to be a medical intervention to save the patient. At this point, the only treatment that seems likely to have a chance at working is massive voter turnout.

What I don't understand is why the Supreme Court can't just lift the stay on the Judge Chutkin case from proceeding while it goes about its business debating "for the ages" (per Gorsuch) the merits of presidential immunity for "official acts"? The Supremes know this specific case does not concern official acts by Trump. So, why not just let the trial in DC with Jack Smith proceed while it fiddles with the bigger issues that are not being tested in Trump's specific case (as Jackson noted)?

@msbellows Talking to the DOJ in his capacity as "president" or as "an incumbent president who lost re-election"? He wasn't talking to DOJ out of the goodness of his heart and from his sincere concern for protecting the fairness (for all voters) of the elections process generally, I suspect.

SharonCrockett,
@SharonCrockett@toot.community avatar

@msbellows Can't believe this is where we are. Absolute immunity makes zero sense, except if we still had a King George III and hadn't won the revolution.

SharonCrockett,

@GottaLaff By July 3rd, Trump may have already been convicted in the NY election interference/hush money case. Also, the Republican Natl Convention will be held on July 15th, just 12 days later. Okay, so a potentially convicted man who's still waiting to find out if he has absolute immunity will be "crowned" Republican presidential nominee. We're living in upside-down times.
