Nearly there with my hoodie - just need to enclose this i-cord in the hood and I can get it blocked in time for the winter break! We're planning a good few walks so I'm looking forward to having an extra cosy layer (with a bit of sparkle ✨).

There’s an old joke in Scotland that the best Christmas songs are Songs of the Stone – about the recovery, on Christmas Day 1950, of Scotland’s Stone of Destiny from Westminster Abbey.

Let me share with you the story and some of these songs 🧵

The Stone of Destiny is an old block of red sandstone used for centuries to coronate Scotland’s monarchs. Historically it was kept at Scone Abbey, near Perth, but in 1296 it was taken by the English King Edward I and moved to London. After this it was used to crown most English, then British, monarchs.

The stone was kept in England for >650 years.

Until, on Christmas Day 1950, four Glasgow students travelled to London and recovered the Stone from Westminster Abbey.

Their names are Ian Hamilton, Gavin Vernon, Kay Matheson and Alan Stuart – here Hamilton, Matheson and Vernon (L-R) are in 1951.

As taking the Stone was A Big Deal, it took the students a few weeks to get it back to Scotland without being caught. They hid it in various places along the way – including burying it in a field in Kent, and concealing it in a trunk in the basement of the American consulate’s Public Affairs Officer.

The stone couldn’t be hidden indefinitely, so in April 1951 it was left at Arbroath Abbey - from where the 1320 Declaration of Arbroath had asserted Scottish nationhood (subtle symbolism here).

Looking for recommendations for a daily yarn crafting project for Dec! Like an advent calendar, but I’d love either one project with daily steps, or 12 or 24 tiny projects that could each be done in an hour or two. The directory brings together organisations in and outside Scotland with collections of Scottish traditional music.

Users can identify collection holders, find information on their catalogues, get in touch with them, and compare collections from different organisations.

The Forth at Stirling just now. Never seen it this bad in five years of living here. Really hope this is the worst of it.

A white 1930s boathouse building, with the boat-storage level half-submerged by the flooded river. Some rowing boats have been brought up to try and avoid the flood water but are beginning to be reached by it.
