Some thoughts on learning Taiwanese.

Why am I learning Taiwanese?

  1. My family's 'native' language is Hokkien (I also speak Teochew better, but it's related so I see it as similar)

  2. We are from Singapore / Malaysia, where there has been zero opportunities to learn to read / write Hokkien

  3. Hokkien is 100% an oral tradition in SE Asia

  4. In recent years I've been watching with interest, the resurgent movement to read / write / speak Taiwanese, in Taiwan

Turns out free drink tickets from Yanaka Coffee Lucky Bags can ONLY be used at the store you bought it at, not any store... which makes NO SENSE!!!

In that, if 1 is working from logic that conveniences customers, it makes no sense. It only makes sense when u consider making it difficult 4 customers 2 conveniently redeem them is the premise.

I really like Yanaka Coffee, but this crap annoys me.

That said, I know the baristas have no say in this so I keep my frustrations on social media

If you appreciate somebody's work, like their kid, value their friendship, learned a lot from that thing they wrote, or whatever, for heaven's sake, tell them. I've gotten two really kind emails out of the blue in the past couple weeks, and the people who wrote them have no idea how huge those tiny glimmers of light are to me in this shitty, painful year. Say thanks! Tell people exactly how they're great, preferably in writing!

@eliotedits I've done this twice in the past two weeks, each to a professor regarding their scholarship & it just makes the world a nicer place, especially since scholars only expect to hear from colleagues & students, if at all, about the appreciated impact of their work
