Phew. Long day fixing electrical issues at the shop due to insane lightning last night. My reward getting home. Delicious pick me up out of the Argos. A fresh Magnolia Blend 18.6g in, 37.8 out, fruity snappy.

LordofCandy,

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @TuxOnBike @hszakher @alb_004 @pixelfed how does that kill your interest if every server has control of it? Make an instance without one. Join one without one. Or join one that facilitates your interests. Kind of a huge gradient there to enjoy whereas none other have that flexibility. I enjoy being able to skim those I follow but I also acknowledge that I don’t always find new things to explore. 🍻

LordofCandy,

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @TuxOnBike @hszakher @alb_004 @pixelfed but can’t we say that about everything here? Your host is choosing what servers are going to be federated from, that’s just an enclosure as well. Which is why my first mention was run your own. You can have that control. Therefore you have the full gamut of options, like we expect here.

LordofCandy,

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @TuxOnBike @hszakher @alb_004 @pixelfed sorry I thought you meant more walled gardens or hidden content. Afaik if you are on a defederated server you’ll never see or hear content outside of that. Can you send a helpful link on enclosure because I’ve done a few vectors of search and am not finding relevance.

Meta lost $3.85 billion on the metaverse in the first quarter of 2024 alone. You know, that thing we all laughed about a couple years ago and next to no one actually uses.

It’s burned $45 billion on the metaverse since the end of 2020.

https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/24/metas-reality-labs-posts-3point85-billion-loss-in-first-quarter.html

LordofCandy,

@parismarx I’d like to know the data behind the numbers. Where has that money been invested. What is it actually doing. That’s a lot of budget, something is cooking regardless.

A few people responded to my post about where to sell the models for my Filament Stackers saying that Printables allowed you to sell individual models now. Turns out, yes they do but there are 2 problems.

  1. they don't mention it ANYWHERE and it's hidden under "Settings".
  2. this warning is FUCKING SCARY and almost drove me away, because the context was name & address.

After digging to find an example it turns out they only display name and country.

a screenshot of someone's seller information. It shows their display name, username, real name and country. I've obscured the real name and country parts.

LordofCandy,

@masukomi I mean from everything you’ve pointed out they don’t want to be a selling platform. At least not yet. The amount of friction you have detailed exemplifies this.

#3DPrinting I stumbled across Monika McWuff's YouTube work on making the world's fastest 3D Printer (sub 2min Benchie) 🤯 and... OMG someone with 💰 needs to sponsor them for the good of the community. Any print farm with machines this fast would have WAY higher throughput & like F1 tech eventually trickling down to consumer cars, this would benefit us all.

https://www.youtube.com/@wandwuff

Imagine if she had a big granite block to mount that too, and a CNC / machinist to build her custom hot ends…

LordofCandy,

@masukomi the problem is speed is only viable with pla and pla is only good for niche products that don’t see much good heat, sheer or impact force or long term utility without degradation. I find them interesting but so impractical.

LordofCandy,

@masukomi
Petg, abs, Asa, nylon, peek— all warp under rapid cooling, & generally need a toasty chamber to keep from warping off the bed. ABS is so warp heavy under cooling I’ve had prints literally rip themselves apart if the chamber isn’t hot enough.

I can print pla at about 150-175 with my setup if I can get the heights right to allow volumetric load and heat melt to be right. Petg maybe 100-110. Abs/asa 100, nylon 60. Not due to speed just the thermoplastic properties.

LordofCandy,

@masukomi the industry has more in it than ever before. I do look forward to seeing what new minds eventually bring to the table. I do a lot of printing in utility driven filaments and would just love it if we could bring some of that magic forward but have no idea how they’ll overcome some of the issues. But I do love seeing people try! 😉👍

Look at this guy. Just sitting there, refusing to make eye contact. Trying to pretend he didn’t completely screw the pooch on this print.

#3DPrinting

LordofCandy,

@masukomi wow that print is looking rough! Maybe a bit of over extrusion along with too close to plate. Go home printer. You’re drunk. 😂

LordofCandy,

@masukomi trying to look closely.

Some odd layer adhesion issues so maybe a little hotter.

Maybe dry the filament if it’s been a long while.

Hard to diagnose fully as that looks like the first layer of a top layer going down so it’s going to look weird. First layer overall would be telling as it’s the classical way to diagnose a lot of issues.

LordofCandy,

@masukomi I love my dirty imperfect prints. “Let it ride” it’s for a purpose and the purpose ain’t pretty. Hehe. Good luck to ya!👍

First half sheet run. Needed a wood cart. So here we go. Can handle sheets in the back and a lot of misc. in front. Just need to add the last dowels but should work well. Took longer getting the pocket holes and wheels on than cutting the sheets down. 😂

Plywood and raw materials are so expensive it's putting me off #woodworking - at my local lumber yards in Raleigh the going rate for a 4x8 sheet of 3/4” baltic birch is $130 a sheet!
Even the average at best quality Maple Home Depot Plywood is $80 per sheet.
It can't just be me that hopes these prices come down again? Right?

LordofCandy,

@ironicbadger Baltic birch is a bad example though isn’t it? Just recently came back into the states after quite a long absence. Down in Charlotte here, hi up there.

Have you tried other lumbar yards in the area? https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=1fiq2gE_wRvVgiu8jHGPgJQo_hUtE0qQp&usp=sharing

Roosters may have passed the self-recognition test.

Phys.org reports: "Prior research has suggested that very few animal species have the type of self-awareness known as self-recognition—where they see and understand that an image in a mirror is of themselves rather than another member of the same species."

Ender, your times has come (again)

The door fell off.

What would you print this from, nylon?

#3Dprinting

LordofCandy,

@stooovie nylon seems overkill. Petg/abs/asa would work fine.

LordofCandy,

@stooovie probably. But depending on your setup & orientation your print may be stronger intrinsically than their injection molded bit.

Over breakfast I complained to my husband about not having enough time to do all my work, and over lunch I tried to convince him to start a new project with me, and apparently I am making his eye twitch.

LordofCandy,

@grammargirl oof. My wife has this twitch or kind hearted sigh… when I start talking projects. 😅

Private
LordofCandy,

@DoctorDNS @johnlehet @Swalsh @theautisticcoach @coffee no. It’s the terroir. The acidity and flavor lend to a blueberry interpretation. Misty Valley Eth used to produce some of the most vibrant berry flavors every few years. Quite unique. Quite good. In chocolate the Dominican Republic tends to produce a very cherry chocolate similarly.

do not "upgrade" your cooling to these silly 3D-printed ducts. Almost all of them (of course there are exceptions) will lead to worse cooling unless you know very well what you're doing. Chances are the manufacturer knows better than random enthusiast on Thingiverse.

LordofCandy,

@stooovie that really depends. Some Chinese knock off printer has probably not done flow studies on their shrouds but I know of a few thingiverse and cults maker-engineers who have done good shroud work.

It’s all part of the journey though in getting to know your printer and it’s capabilities. Print a shroud. Test it out. See if it performs. Iterate until you learn the original was indeed better or you find something engineered that shows qualitative improvement. 😉

Trying to heat sink (solder press) some tiny magnets into prints but I think they are demagnetizing. Don’t have the problem with larger ones but the 3mm size.. ideas?

@mcdanlj ah. So many nuances I did not know about. Thanks for the additional info and sourcing of future materials.

Fun discovery of the day: PrusaSlicer (at least for the Mini) actually enforces the machine limits by emitting appropriate G-code when slicing. Among other things, this means that if you want, say, higher accelerations, you can just request them.

This is probably because the Mini can't save anything to EEPROM, which means any change to presets requires a firmware upgrade.

@3dprinting #3DPrinting

LordofCandy,

@Stark9837 @koz @3dprinting give it time. Once we understand the full lifecycle of the Bambu line I think we’ll see a lot more breaking it open and down. The way they’ve managed their community with banning modders and such engenders little long term love.
