@KAOS@dragonscave.space

Hi! I'm Kaos from Berlin, Germany.
Among other things, I'm interested in genealogy and history and I love the ancient board game Go.

I have ADHD and Autism, and I am a white, polyam, pansexual, genderfluid enby, and a mom. Most of the time, I pass as a straight cis-woman. I often try to pass as neurotypical as well, but I can't make it work. ^ ^

I'm planning our IKEA visit tomorrow (we basically need to get all the furniture for the kid's "new" room, and shelves for the office room), and in order to get out of there again as quickly as possible, I'm preparing a list.

So... I opened the excel sheet I used before - I think the last time was in 2017 or so - and I am entering names and prices and article numbers, and woah! stuff got so much more expensive since then. I can directly compare because I bought Ivar parts back then, and I want to buy Ivar parts tomorrow as well, and prices more than doubled.

The 4-day-long Little People meeting was fun, but so intense - I need a day off now. 😅 (And I can have it. I just have to tell myself that I there's no need to feel guilty for that!)

KAOS,

This year I've also been smarter and did not create any to-dos for myself out of all the input I got the last couple of days. 😁
There are some things I'd like to do, but I don't have to, and they can wait a bit.

I have been under the impression that recent full electric cars, including Teslas, are making a sound reminiscent to those older science-fiction movies with hover vehicles.

Now, did the recent vehicles copy those movies or did these movies accurately predict the sounds these vehicle would make, or is this how electric vehicles (that those movies would have used) sound by design, or is it selective memory?

KAOS,
@KAOS@dragonscave.space avatar

@hypolite

I would rather assume the vehicles copy the movies, because electric cars just don't make much noise in general - however, I heard that they are legally required (at least here in the EU?) to drive with more sound in order to prevent accidents that might happen because they are too quiet. So if they need extra sounds, it makes sense that sound designers copy "cool future sounds".

I didn't know this post and now I think more people should see it. Especially people who draw and illustrate - because there are still too many pictures of unpractical hospital wheelchairs out there.

My favourite genre of post is when I get to hear about all the cool stuff you’ve achieved.
Tried crochet for the first time? Made a healthy choice? A new personal best at best at bouldering?
More of this please.

KAOS,
@KAOS@dragonscave.space avatar

@RobW Ha, hm, maybe this sounds not very exciting to most, but Fortnite has this new Lego game that's just a jumping parcours, and I tried it and was way better than I would have expected. (Because I tend to think that I'm shit at this.) I got to platform 320-something or so and I fell about 70 times (when you fall, you restart at the last checkpoint, and yes, falls get counted).

I also started knitting a scarf and am trying out various patterns - I last knitted many years ago and have never tried any cool patterns before - but honestly, this jumping game was so much harder for me than getting into knitting, especially because I'm usually not very patient with such games and I didn't give up this time, but I only quit when I got to a level where the tiny platforms moved in such weird ways that I got a headache. 😉 So I'm actually proud of myself for getting so far. 😅

A couple months ago I abruptly stopped my LEGO activity that was eating at me because I felt that I had to clear my living room of all the set bags I was storing in while awaiting for parts or building. With no end in sight, I ended up burning out until my partner suggested that we could put them away in a closet until I was ready to resume in a better mood.

Ever since, I've had trouble finishing tasks that I wanted to start in the first place:

  • Unlocking a different ending in Cyberpunk 2077 with a new character.
  • Writing a review of Cyberpunk 2077 on my blog.
  • Implementing a moderation system in Friendica.
  • Designing a board game inspired by the video game Northgard.
  • Restoring a few big 1980-90s pirate/castle/space LEGO sets that were donated to me by fellow parents in my kid's class.

At the same time, I'm longing to find something else to do that will keep me engaged, locking me in a mixed apathy-restlessness feeling there probably is a German word for.

I don't know what to do to get out of this rut, I feel like it's been long enough that it would have passed on its own if it was just temporary.

KAOS,
@KAOS@dragonscave.space avatar

@hypolite

If this is out of character for you, I understand it's bugging you.

Regarding myself... well, I tend to have many interests, and each one lasts for a while, but then I have enough of it or something new comes along and takes up all of my attention and energy. Then I put it away, like you did. And I used to feel bad for being like that, but now I'm fine with it - because it's just how my brain works, and activities that I really enjoyed will usually come back to me after a year or two, or even longer. Knowing that makes it easier for me to allow myself a break.
But I know I can only speak for myself here, so Idk if this approach would help you or rather not.

Today is Rare Disease Day!

A condition is defined as rare if only 1 in 2000 people (or less) have it.
My son has a condition that occurs in less than 1 in 1000000 people, and that's why I'm writing this post.

So, rare conditions are rare - but there are so many of them, and millions of people worldwide are affected by one.

Why is it so important to raise awareness for rare conditions?
Because it can be very hard to get proper treatment, and also to get a correct diagnose in the first place.

Doctors learned that "common things are common, rare things are rare", and some of them will even dismiss the possibility of a rare condition, not take necessary actions and not refer you to a specialist - that happened to us at first! We were still lucky, got support from a selfhelp association (in our case the German association of little people and their families - BKMF) and got a diagnosis after only 1 year.

Würde solche Beiträge gerne öfter in deutschen Medien sehen!

If you were wondering what playdates are looking like in Brooklyn these days, they consist in bringing your iPad to your friend's so you can play a Minecraft clone in Roblox online together in the same room while your iPad is plugged to the nearest outlet you can find, which means you may end up playing on the floor.

Btw, the 3 of us played a lot of Lego Fortnite at home this weekend. Together on two devices, so it was always either the kid and M., or the kid and me. (and he's only 6, but he's not so bad anymore)

My hot take on the Vision Pro is the same as my hot take on every AR/VR/Mixed Reality headset produced in the past checks notes 20 years: "If most women can't use your product for 4 hours straight without throwing up, don't try to tell me that it's the future of anything." I said what I said.

Women can use a smartphone indefinitely without nausea. They can use a laptop indefinitely. A gaming console and TV indefinitely. But XR headsets cause motion sickness in most women in under an hour. 🤷🏿‍♂️

When you visit a foreign country, always take time to check out a grocery store. I guarantee you will see at least one thing that blows your mind compared to your home country.

Belgium: an entire wall of sprinkles for buttered toast in the morning, also the huge aisle of mayonnaise flavors to put on your fries, like hundreds of options

Western EU: eggs out in aisles unrefrigerated

Italy: unbelievably fresh and tasty fruit even in bodegas

Australia: TimTams come in a bazillion flavors

@mathowie Israel (been both in a big supermarket as well as in small grocery stores in an Arabic village): Lots of baby formula and diapers. Everywhere, even in the smallest shop. People obviously have many kids. (That was nice for us, traveling with a 6-month-old.)

@mathowie Lithuania: Lots of sweets that looked like those I only knew from my Russian course and from Russian shops here in Berlin, my favorite: a chocolate-covered bar made of curd cheese with poppy seeds in it. Yum! Never saw that anywhere again, unfortunately.
