#ThrowbackThursday

That one was knit over 15 years ago - and it has long ago moved on to a new home.

Made from sock yarn, this one was a favorite for both my daughter and me. She loved the color and the hood, I liked that I could throw it into the washing machine.

So: win win situation.

If I remember correctly, it was a rather quick knit because I had so much fun coming up with the design. And it was really small.

This is kind of the opposite of the #yarnuary travel for yarn prompt: I'm really hoping that this llama I was given by a friend last year, who now lives on my farm, will give me some hyperlocal wool when it's finally warm enough to shear him in May.

I've never processed raw wool or spun wool, but I'm willing to learn in order to make a sweater from grass that I grew!

Any tips on processing raw wool? Anyone have experience with llama wool, specifically?

FanCityKnits,
@FanCityKnits@troet.cafe avatar

@sundogplanets

Just dust it off and start. Kamelids are different from sheep, they don't produce lanolin. So the scouring process, that removes the lanolin and dirt from a sheep's wool is mostly unnecessary. What dirt is in the fiber is mostly dust.

A friend puts the fiber is small portions in mesh bags, brings out the carpet beater. Rough shaking or other methods of giving the bags a good shake should do as well.

#yarnuary - Where have you traveled because of fiber?

Not really that crazy distances so far. The most probably was a fiber festival in #Blaufelden which is about 160 km / 100 miles from where I live.

It was my partners idea to go there, but his motives had not that much do with yarn and fiber. We're members of our local #carsharing Coop #stadtmobil and he got a chance to borrow a Tesla, his first chance to test an electric car for a longer trip.

Still #weaving on my scarf. I now know, why you always get told to center your project on the loom. It's way easier to beat at an angle, if it's off center. Just warping until you run out of yarn isn't the best idea.

With weaving every step needs quite a bit more planning than I'm used with knitting or crochet.

Another, valuable lesson.

#yarnuary - what's your favorite colorway?

Anything from pink to purple. I'm happy work nearly any shade in that spectrum, be it a light shade of rose, bright pink (not neon though) or dark aubergine.

Even my hair is usually dyed somewhere in that range of colors.

Theoretically I'm the fall type (if you believe in the for season color theory), but I like warm and cool shades equally.

A close second is turquoise and all shades of blue-green.

- favorite spin/process/ weight

My most used yarn weight is light fingering to sport. Even for garments I usually prefer thin yarns, as they result in more versatile products. A fine cardigan is a year round garment.

Though when I spin my default is mostly lace - I really have to concentrate to get anything thicker.

#yarnuary - What's your favorite fiber?

I love wool. It's my go-to fiber, especially when spinning. But not all wools are created equal. For spinning my favorite fibers are Bluefaced Leicester, Corriedale and Shetland - local fibers are hard to find.

For knitting I've reached several times for local wool from sheep that are raised in Germany, which is a bit more ... sturdy? Not extremely soft, but I like the wooly feeling. I plan to keep doing that.

Travel socks - first pair for 2024.

When I'm "on the road" I usually knit socks. This is the first pair for this year (they are not exclusive for travel). I'm going to count how many socks I'm working on while traveling this year because I expect to do quite a bit this year.

- who do you give the most of your creations to?

It's probably half and half my partner and myself.

Yes, I'm mostly a selfish crafter. A (somewhat distant) third is my daughter, but with her there are times when I make quite a lot and then there might be two years, when I don't make anything at all.

Somewhat recently she got 4 pairs of socks.

#yarnuary - who are your fiber art friends?

Oh, that's an easy one.

I've two online groups of friends - the great people here in the fediverse and my fiberarts community on #ravelry (of course there's some overlap between those two).

And then there's my offline community in and around #Karlsruhe - there are a variety of regular meetings going on.

Then there's of course my family - my daughter and my sister-in-law. The latter is the one I visit the Wollmeise store.

But trust Roxanne to have a twist to it, that I didn't already know - the flatter way to do the three needle bind off.

#Yarnuary: who inspires you in the fiberart world?

After thinking about this for some time: there really aren't people in looking for inspiration consistently. There is so much inspiration out there I find myself finding new sources all the time.

I get inspiration from pictures, little details, color combinations, stitch patterns, questions that get asked somewhere.

Really it's everywhere - here in the fediverse, on ravelry, on Pinterest, places where clothes or textiles appear.

Progress on my weaving project. If emptied the first shuttle, about 25% of the weft yarn.

The selvedges are getting better, although I still see room for improvement.

With using the same yarn for warp and weft there isn't a lot to see about the twill, but i like the a bit more drapy fabric compared to tabby weave so it's worth the extra effort.

Januar.

#Yarnuary prompt: who taught you how to #FiberCraft ?

When I think back I seem to "always" have done fibercrafts. I'm not even sure, which I learned first. My grandma and my mom always worked on some project, I've spent probably half of my toddlerhood in something crafted by my mother.

I definitely learned before the age of 6, either simple embroidery or crocheting, from my mom. When I started school I also could knit, had even done my first pair of socks.

Third time's the charm.

It's my third attempt weaving 2/1 #twill on my #RHL (rigid heddle loom). The first and second time I made errors during the threading stage and had to re-thread the whole thing at least once. But this time it went smoothly from the get go. I still had to use a threading plan, but it seems I've now found one, that I understand and that is easy to follow. Or I just was more focused. Whatever.

On to #weaving.

#MyCreativeYear - December

Winter, time for coats and jackets.

I've done one (mostly, the buttons still need sewing on) and a second one is about 2/3 finished. Both on (for me) really thick needles.

I'm thinking about writing out the pattern, but I'm struggling with sizing, especially inclusive sizing. But so far I'm pleased with the outcome, the style works well with the very rustic yarn and I learned a few new things about making a collar.

#MyCreativeYear - November

Socks galore.

My mother has been #knitting socks all life, just like my grandmother. The latter one taught me how to knit them originally.

Now my mom is too ill to knit, but a few neighbors have helped her a lot since she got sick. Socks were what my mom used to give them for years so I took up that mantle this year. With fun yarn it wasn't a chore.

Proud mom moment.

My daughter learned #knitting maybe 10 to 12 years ago (grade school or early secondary school), she made a few things but didn't really take to it.

Yesterday she came with me to a large knitting gathering and wanted to do socks. Made the cast on herself for the first time and kept knitting the whole day - she's now close to turning the heel.

Knitting seems to be like biking - once you learned you don't forget.

Apologies, it seems I don’t always see all posts - even ones from people I follow don’t seem to always show when I search the . I just came across one elsewhere, by chance, then looked through last few days, and saw quite a few that were not there for me before. So apologies if i ever did not boost your posts - I generally always try, didn’t know i may have been missing some (maybe quite a few?) @FediTips

@pvonhellermannn

As far as I understand things here: following a hashtag will not pull posts to your server, unlike following a person does.

If you follow the person, all their posts will automatically be pulled and then they are "known" on your server.

If you follow a hashtag, your server searches the toots, that are already there and shows them to you. So a toot from someone, that so far has no connection to your server will not appear on itself.

Good news, one member of our knitting group is going to have a baby in a little while. We are knitting little patches, they're going to be joined together during our regular meetings and then some of them will get a little crochet applique - a mushroom, a star, a lion head, funny little things. A fun baby blanket.

Those are my contribution.
