🇳🇿"New Zealand is experiencing its highest peak in COVID-19 cases since December 2022, professor Michael Baker says."

"Despite the recommended isolation period now only being 5 days, Baker suggested people still getting a positive Covid-19 test wait to test again on day 6 or 7 before going back into society."

"The biology hasn't changed," Baker said, but there was more pressure for people to go back to work and school."

Victorian teacher and school staff absences up by 30% amid burnout and teacher shortages. By Suzan Delibasic and Susie O'Brien

@auscovid19

Source: https://www.heraldsun.com.au/victoria-education/victorian-teacher-and-school-staff-absences-up-by-30-per-cent-amid-burnout-and-teacher-shortages/news-story/f584c20dfb4d7015995180de34bc1b3d

The figures showed the total number of reported hazards grew by 68 per cent. The number of standard claims in the past financial year also increased to 1178 – up from 928. There were 565 lost time claims, compared to 385 the previous financial year. The data also showed WorkSafe inspectors issued 103 improvement notices, compared to 68 the previous year. Australian Primary Principals Association president Angela Falkenberg said the findings were “extremely concerning”. “Teacher shortages are having a significant toll on staff,” Ms Falkenberg said. “One of the challenges of the workforce shortages means that staff in schools are having to often do additional work.
“There’s a physical and emotional burnout among teaching staff and that is contributing to the decrease in morale. “A full-time principal might be teaching three days a week because they can’t get staff. Therefore, the work they should’ve done on admin is being done after hours and on the weekends.” Andrew Dalgleish, president of the Victorian Principals’ Association covering primary schools, said school staff were reporting an increase in stress and workloads. “This data shows that we need to do more at a school level to support principals, teachers and education support staff,” Mr Dalgleish said. “There are concerning trends if this data continues in this way, but we’ve seen in the recent budget there’s been an increase to address the health and wellbeing components including improving occupational health and safety.” A Department of Education spokesman said: “The safety and wellbeing of students, staff and school communities is our highest priority.” “Workers compensation claims are assessed independently by our WorkSafe agent. We provide support to schools to support injured workers in their recovery and return to work,” the spokesman said. School leaders said they were experiencing the highest levels of violence in a decade, with 35.4 per cent of Victorian principals physically targeted last year, the Australian Catholic University’s 2023 Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey found.

South Australia: "Patients who went to hospital for one thing, then died of COVID will never be known according to SA Health as records were never kept" By Brad Crouch

@SAHealth @PictonChris @PMalinauskasMP @auscovid19

Source: https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/patients-who-went-to-hospital-for-one-thing-then-died-of-covid-will-never-be-known-according-to-sa-health-as-records-were-never-kept/news-story/e41dea2a57ded66c0ac3ee895e6594d1

However, SA Health says it is unable to say how many of these people caught Covid while in hospital, only that they were identified as having the disease after they were admitted. This is despite the vigorous focus on testing at the height of the pandemic. SA Health released only limited data detailing patients identified as having Covid while in hospital for other conditions who subsequently died. This was from the Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) which includes the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The CALHN records show in 2022 five patients who were identified as having Covid while in hospital for other conditions subsequently died, and two died in 2023. A statement from SA Health says hospitals undertake robust prevention and control measures to limit the spread of hospital-acquired infections to protect patients, visitors and staff. “Inpatients testing positive to Covid-19 does not mean that it was acquired from the hospital,” it says. “Patients may have unknowingly had Covid-19 before coming to hospital. Similarly, we freely allow visitors at our hospitals, some of whom may not know they are infectious. In response to queries from The Advertiser on how many patients caught Covid while in hospital and how many of these patients subsequently died of the disease, for the years from 2020-23, SA Health said there was no requirement to notify about patients identified while in hospital as having Covid.
“Regardless of whether you test Covid-19 positive or not, if you are sick, stay home and don’t go to work or crowded places until you are completely well to reduce the risk of spreading your infection to others.” The data shows the number of patients identified as having Covid while in hospital dropped in 2023 compared to 2022, including from 86 cases to 38 cases at CALHN which officials say may be due to the RAH having 100 per cent single rooms, reducing the risk of cross infection. SA Health’s tally of seven deaths over two years of CALHN patients identified as having Covid after being admitted is in stark contrast with Queensland Health data showing one patient dying every day after contracting Covid while being treated in hospital for other medical conditions. Its records show in this period, an average of 14 patients in Queensland hospitals contracted Covid daily, with one fatality recorded each day. The data was obtained by Queensland doctors using that state’s Right to Information law.

Queensland: Shortage of meds that are best for little kids with mycoplasma pneumonia. By Jackie Sinnerton

"Queensland Health reports that this year, up until May 5, 6587 PCR tests for mycoplasma pneumonias were carried out, with one-quarter proving positive"

#mycoplasmapneumonia @auscovid19

Source: https://www.couriermail.com.au/lifestyle/shortage-of-meds-that-are-best-for-little-kids-with-mycoplasma-pneumonia/news-story/e4b2b3c2f176eeb52b62da6ef3ceca12

Australian Medical Association Queensland president Maria Boulton said this included a shortage of an antibiotic suitable for small children to treat mycoplasma pneumonia. “It’s a liquid medicine that has to be taken only once a day and suits young patients better than other antibiotics that need more than one daily dose but parents are having trouble getting the hold of it,” Dr Boulton said. “Some parents are also concerned about having to wait for the RSV vaccine.” Queensland Health reports that this year, up until May 5, 6587 PCR tests for mycoplasma pneumonias were carried out, with one-quarter proving positive. RSV cases hit 28,909 for the same period. “The government needs ensure there are enough medications to cope with surges,” Dr Boulton said. Royal Australian College of General Practitioners president Nicole Higgins told The Courier-Mail GPs were finding medicine shortages a huge problem. “More must be done to ensure that all patients can access the medicines they need without difficulty or delay,” she said. A submission from the RACGP to the Therapeutic Goods Administration calls for mandates to ensure a minimum supply of medication is always available in Australia to more effectively meet demand. Dr Boulton said shortages of hormone replacement medications were causing Queensland women great distress as they grappled with debilitating menopausal symptoms. “This is so unfair on the patients; sometimes they go for substitutes which can cause further problems,”
“Medicine shortages are becoming more of a problem in Australia, and we need to see a comprehensive strategy from government about how to prevent shortages and how to manage them better when they do occur. Australia is particularly vulnerable because we import around 90 per cent of our medicines,” Prof Martin said The college proposes that international suppliers of medicines critical to the health of Australians be encouraged to enter and remain within the Australian market through TGA-driven incentives.

Masks work, our comprehensive review has found.

"Getting most people to wear a mask could nip the outbreak in the bud, preventing a pandemic or lessening its impact. Wearing a mask is inconvenient, but not as inconvenient as lockdowns."

"The bottom line from our recent review is masks work. Along with improving indoor air quality and avoiding crowded, underventilated places, they provide the best way to avoid catching a respiratory infection.
