I had a irl friend and long time participant in a music sharing FB page I used to have tell me he lost a lot of respect for me because I once said I liked Sublime 😂 Music snobbery is something I’ve never tolerated.

One cool thing Bandcamp does is to sometimes accurately suggest bands you'll like based on other things you've liked/wishlisted. I wishlisted/was listening to Grave Desecrator, and Bandcamp suggested Profanatica, which I hadn't heard, and it's KILLER.

@jake4480 Agreed! I've found some cool new-to-me stuff this way too. And they make it so easy to check out, with one click to play. I also like the email they send me every so often with summaries of what people I follow have recently purchased.

@atomicpoet @crumbleneedy So glad you asked! I have the same question. I feel like I don’t know what a shitpost is. I’ve been told here recently that they’re just fun and silly. I thought they’re posts meant to antagonize and irritate people, usually in an off topic reply in a thread. Here it’s represented by a Pepe meme?

    Us3 - "Cruising" (1993)

    The debut album from British jazz-rap group Us3 really holds up.

    Its mixture of jazz and hip-hop, with material from popular jazz musicians of the 20th century being reimagined, is such a cool concept. And all the samples are from old Blue Note Records classics.

    @greymatter Me neither. It just came up (I play my iTunes library on shuffle a lot) and so I played the whole album and was amazed how good it still sounds. I like Cantaloop too. Might still be the best track

    @mrcompletely @cybeardjm @greymatter Thanks! Any other cool stuff, please share. I don't know this genre very well. There was a local Bay Area jazz-hop band we used to see play live in the 90s, but besides them and some obvious ones like Us3, I never really explored further

    I’m also wary of the Quote Toot feature and the behavior it can facilitate.

    QT’s are often used to harass, degrade, and divide. While not caused by the feature, QTs make bullying and divisiveness a lot easier.

    But in my experience, there’s another common use case to be concerned about. The ‘QT as reply’.

    Typically done by large follower accounts. Instead of replying directly, the OP replies by way of QT, to ensure all of their followers also see your reply. So in addition to the OPs reply, you have lots of other people trying to engage you, and they’re of course not all constructive or friendly.

    The QT reply isn’t harassment per se. But it can feel like intimidation, discouraging valid criticism of the most popular social media accounts.

    I really hope we don’t see the worst parts of Twitter culture migrate over here.

    I've spent most of my social media time on Mastodon but after trying out the Bluesky beta I've changed my mind on something. The design decision to not have quote tweeting is, I think, the right one. I did not think this before about five days ago.

    But seeing what's happening over at Bluesky, I think QTing just seems to encourage abuse and people talking past each other rather than conversation.

    Open to persuasion on this, obviously but that's my two cents right now.

    @thealexknapp @Jonathanglick This is precisely why I don't want QTs here. They are so often used as a way to reply, but in front of one's own audience. Imagine doing this in real life. Not replying to someone until your entire friend group is present. It's really awkward and rude imo. Def need opt-in only.

    Culture Club release their first single, “White Boy”

    After being a regular at the Blitz Club, occasionally singing with Bow Wow Wow, and performing under the stage name Lieutenant Lush, Boy George, along with bassist Mikey Craig, started Culture Club.

    And 1982 was their year.

    They released their single “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” in September, and their album Kissing To Be Clever in October.

    I found their music ok. Pretty common new wave pop.

    But I loved the way Boy George got the usual suspect freaked out. Punk rock enough for me!

    1. Mandatory liability insurance
    2. Red Flag laws
    3. Universal background checks
    4. Ban high-capacity magazines and semi-automatic assault weapons

    @Lowie @DebR Agreed. Gun culture runs really deep here. I find it's embedded even deeper than the seemingly intractable car culture, which is to say it's gonna be really difficult. That's why I like the insurance requirement. It's just bringing "personal responsibility" to the one consumer product our laws don't currently touch.

    @reay @fuzzyduck @LeaBug I wonder how much of this is due to people starting by looking for a mobile app. I used web from my laptop to sign up it was a pretty straightforward experience. What helped was reading that I could change servers later if needed. Had no idea at the time why I would want to change servers, but figured this option made my decision low stakes.
