Weird #plumbing issue. In warm weather, our toilet and drains sound hollow, gurgles, etc, when flushing or draining, like when the tub is drained. In the cold months, it is fine. Last year we had the system snaked 100%. No clogs–been an issue since we bought house in 2019.

I am thinking the warm weather, wind, etc is causing negative air pressure through the main roof plumbing vent

What does the #Fediverse think? Any solutions?

#Plumbers #Building #HomeConstruction #construction #Physics

CAman,

@paul When you had it snaked, did they use a scope? Did they follow the lines all the way to where it connects to the main? Also, how old is the house and plumbing? If the house is less than 50 years old, it probably has PVC, which means less likelihood of collapse, tree roots, etc. If it’s older than 50, it probably has clay pipes, which means you could start having those problems. Tree roots would grow in the summer months, which is why you might start noticing it then.

CAman,

@paul Okay. That means there is probably an issue with the vent. It is probably inadequate, not positioned for best performance, or something is partially obstructing it. Check it for an obstruction. An animal or something could have fallen down it. If it’s clear and If you’re not having any backups, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Today, as an act of protest against the genocide unfolding in Gaza,

"Protesters shut down all Interstate 80 traffic heading to San Francisco during the Thursday morning commute. The protesters stopped their cars on the bridge, east of Treasure Island Road, and threw their keys into the Bay before chaining themselves together and to the bridge, according to California Highway Patrol."
-KRON4

The fact that they threw their keys into the Bay is inspiring. If we want to interrupt the perpetual violence of this society, we have to break with our own roles within it.

Background:

https://crimethinc.com/GazaSolidarity

An aerial photograph showing traffic backed up behind a blockade on the Bay Bridge.

CAman,

@CrimethInc Yeah, it’s a great idea to toss thousands of keys containing lead, other heavy metals, acid, and plastic into the Bay, not to mention all the tons of hydrocarbons all the stuck cars belched into the atmosphere. I wish people would think through the consequences when they plan a protest. I can’t imagine that this event did anything to relieve suffering in Gaza, but probably did significant damage to the environment.

CAman,

@CrimethInc I may have been a little hyperbolic, but I did think it through carefully. That protest was ill-conceived. When organizing a protest or rally, the steering committee ought to ask several questions: 1) what are the short term goals?; 2) what are the long term goals?; 3) how will this event help to achieve those goals?; 4) what negative consequences might result? This protest had zero impact on war in Gaza. It did add to environmental pollution. Clearly, they didn’t plan well

CAman,

@CrimethInc one more thing. I am sympathetic to their cause. I applaud and support efforts to stop the killing in Gaza, Israel, and elsewhere. I don’t support protest events that are designed to make a media splash without a clearly defined goal. It’s the same as activists who destroy ancient art to protest the oil industry. It makes no sense and accomplishes nothing. If these organizers had targeted the Lockheed Martin complex in Sunnyvale, I would have been 100% on their side.

CAman,
CAman,

@CrimethInc Thanks for the acknowledgment. I’m not an ignorant clod. I think we are probably on the same side on most issues. We might disagree on tactics, but that is what debate and discussion are all about. Best wishes!

CAman,

@kevinrns I love this! I’ve long thought there should be a way to retrofit existing cars while we transition to non-carbon emitting vehicles. It’s a temporary solution, but one that could help cut emissions quickly and significantly without having to put new cars on the road all at once.

People are not attempting to legitimize slavery because of the past, it's because they want to do it in the future.

    CAman,

@StillIRise1963 the US minimum wage is $7.25 for regular workers and $2.13 for tipped employees. I don’t know anywhere in the US that a worker could live on that. We already have slave labor; we just don’t call it that. It’s that pesky 13th Amendment. Not to worry, the oligarchy found a work-around.

I had the dance mix. I loved those extended play things, and I played both sides of it," said the writer, who also discussed his new novel, "Holly," AI and COVID-19 in the wide-ranging interview. @Teri_Kanefield Corporate news has always been an entertainment industry. Remember WR Hearst’s famous 1897 statement to his photo journalist in Cuba, “You furnish the pictures, and I’ll furnish the war.” The resulting war with Spain was every journalist’s dream. What CNN, Fox, NYT and all the rest do today is no different than what Hearst, Pulitzer, and Greeley did in their day. We can’t survive without a free press, but a press controlled by oligarchs is hardly free.
