skimming my timeline and seeing some drama surrounding mastodon and bluesky and scream-crying about how mastodon's prominence in the fedi is causing harm to the other platforms here.

quote tweets? solved by misskey/calckey and probably a few others
toxic main instance? yeah ... that one i get and the proliferation of mastodon installations makes that one hard to move away from
features being downright refused by the developer? yeah ... a diverse dev team with no one person as the 'face' and all working in relative unison on a common goal is the way yeah? at least not lead in the public eye by one soul white man whose every word is worshipped.

not that that is how i see gargon operating but everytime i see one of his toots, the fan-worship in the replies makes me sick. it's almost as if we need to have a 'white man at the helm that we can worship' vibes in everything we do.

we brought corporate social media thought processes here and pretty much self-destructed. and that mindset is why bluesky is getting props.

mastodon is killing the fedi. or at least not trying very hard not to. the more i am here the more i build up feelings about it.

Mastodon is an incredibly rare opportunity for open-source, non-profit, advertising-free, decentralised software to be a real contender in a category – and, if it continues to grow, even to pull many other social networks into being part of (or interoperable with) the fediverse.

It's strange to me that this isn't mentioned more in the endless opinions about features, onboarding, UX, "vibes" etc.
