Occasional grumpy rants.

ChatGPT, when asked "How would I prove that there have been no female Presidents?", advised meticulous research into historical records,

and unwittingly raised the intriguing possibility that we may have had a closeted trans or non-binary President.

  • If historians identify any such president(s), schools in red states will not be permitted to teach about them

I like how the writers came right out and said it toward the end: David stands for everything worth saving about the world.

Thinking of Christopher Walken's character from "Blast from the Past" who emerged from his fallout shelter, and didn't believe that the U.S.S.R. had broken up. Instead, the Soviets had covertly taken over everything, and used a massive propaganda effort to convince the West that the Cold War was over

Is there such a thing as ethically generated artwork (or writing, or music)? Even if the training data were collected with consent, it still eliminates jobs, and the industrialists tend to win these battles

I'm reading that one important aspect of Twitter is that when everyone was in the same room, it gave marginalized people opportunity to be part of the conversation (and that this was part of what the new owner thought needed fixing).

I don't think we'll see that on mastodon -- authoritarian-ish government accounts won't sign up, because the kinds of people who like decentralization are a hostile audience. There is no single entity that they can stay in good with to prevent defederation.

I wish the Swype keyboard was smarter. It used to guess "peyote" consistently instead of "people" until I deleted the word. Today it misidentified "bickering" as "buggering," which is also odd because although Swype contains British spellings, and I think of that as "chiefly British," it exceeds the censorship threshold that I would expect from a word database that excludes "ass."

In its defence, the app was discontinued years ago -- I made a backup of the APK

The least one can do, when talking about A.I.-generated images, is to not use the word "art" lightly. For example, this is an interesting illustration, but it's not saying anything. If I give it the title "Failed Attempt to Generate an Image of Mayor McCheese Wearing an Eyepatch, No. 1" then it's a bit warmer

spazahedron,

What's weird is they all have face paint like clowns (a la Ronald McDonald), they mostly feature McDonald's colors, they all have gold stars, a hat with a band, and hamburger/cow themes, but none get the distinctive shape of his head. There's also an unexpected Tex-Mex vibe. Second image is the original Mayor McCheese for comparison.

spazahedron,

@petrel Yes, true. And as a joke, it flows better without the "mom" part.

Google Maps: How were our navigation directions?
Me: 3/5 (routed us through a residential neighborhood again)
Google: Did they take you to your destination?
Me: Yes
Google: Did they take you to a convenient street entrance?
Me: Yes
Google: So what's your problem, jackass? If you're not dying in a ditch, that's 5 stars. Baby H. Jesus on a pogo stick.
