Hello and a good meowing :nkoWave:

This morning I woke up with a massive pain in my stomach that kept getting worse

With a bit of panic we rushed to the first aid but there they refused to help me since I had to go to the "doctor first" and take an asprin :nkoFacepalm2: (someone should lose their job)

So when looking for an alternative I could not hold it anymore and we called the ambulance on the parking place

So I went in the ambulance to the hospital today

@rysiek honestly, from what I understand about the 2017 version of Mastodon, this is a pretty solid take.

Mastodon has matured a LOT since then. The federation clearly tripped him up quite a bit, but I took a lot of the article as constructive criticism at worst.

Either way, it's come very far. I still hate "toots", though. That's one of the single worst things about this platform. Can we just come up with a different name???

If you’re on mastodon.social, I would highly recommend that you switch to a different server that protects its people instead of exposing them to a well-known bad actor like Facebook/Meta via Threads.

And remember that Mastodon is not the fediverse. The fediverse is much more than just Mastodon and definitely more so than mastodon.social and Mastodon gGmbH.

This week was pretty eventful! #Linux passed 4% market share on the desktop (more than 6% if you count ChromeOS), #Fedora decided to drop the X11 session for their #GNOME variant (but only for Fedora 41), and the European Union just wrecked Apple and curbed their malicious compliance to the Digital markets Act on the AppStore.

    @faizalr I think it's a little unfair to use "words" as a point of comparison since words can definitely have different token amounts depending on various metrics and the way tokens are counted in each individual LLM

    Not saying it isn't cool, just being very pedantic! Haha

    Somehow, whenever I write Rust, I feel like it's not really for me. I always spend so much time dealing with Rust logic, and so little time on actually writing the code I want.

    I can understand how it suits a lot of people to have an extremely clear visualization of the path their code takes when it runs, but I prefer to write less code, even in that means sacrificing performance.

    @gregorni I feel like there is a tradeoff.

    Rust's code goes to the extreme for the sake of quality (at least in the systems programming world).

    If you want development speed, you will definitely be better off writing code in C, C++ or Go. That being said, your code will eventually have a bug involving memory / segfaulting, especially when working with a team.

    Rust's goal is to prevent stuff like that while having fast execution time at the cost of upfront development speed.

    I’ve always been against mocking the database in tests. The database is as much your bread and butter, as your application code is.

    You should really only mock stuff you don’t want to write to disk, or you don’t own (like, external APIs and systems). Most relational DBs can be replaced with an in-memory SQLite or with a throw-away test container.

    If either feels hard, or you don’t have ownership over your database, then you have other problems that mocking won’t help you solve.

    @preslavrachev I'm a big proponent of using an almost-identical replica of the database used in production for testing (for example, a dev DB). That way, the calls are real and the database will call out non-working app code

    Which #linux distro would you install on a trashcan Mac Pro?

    @ActionRetro personally I have installed Mint on a trashcan MacBook pro and it worked (Macbook from 2012). The only thing I wish I had done was installing the XFCE variant rather than Cinnamon (the system needs as much power as it can get).

    Also, be prepared to debug WiFi issues. I forget how to solve them, but there were wifi issues with the drivers. Also, for me, Firefox had a memory leak (froze after a while) and I never got it to connect to Panera wifi (because of the "agree" popup)

    FTR. I did over 200 self tests and 10+ PCR tests in the last 2.5 years. Got 5 vaccination shots. I am quite sure that so far I didn't catch #COVID. What about you?

    @evan It could definitely be better, and I was hoping there would be a lot more growth within specifically the threadiverse (kbin and Lemmy) by this point. By growth, I mean moreso on the software side of things - kbin especially is still very janky. Artemis makes it better, but it's still not perfect (due to, in my opinion, underlying problems with how kbin was built). Examples would be embedded videos still skewing, page-content indexing issues (seeing posts many, many times), etc.
