Andrew,

I think Geometric weather is abandoned but Breezy Weather is a newer fork that's maintained. I recommend it!

Now here's a cool use for AI!

"DeepMind’s GraphCast and WindBorne’s WeatherMesh can both run on consumer-grade computers, and can complete in a matter of seconds work that would usually require a supercomputer under traditional models."

I've always thought it was so strange how "curry powder" in the US all tastes exactly the same--terrible. Somehow every supplier mixes it to taste identical. As a kid I thought it was literally ground up "curry" and as a result I thought I hated Indian cuisine. Not until adulthood did I realize how amazing and varied Indian food is.

Anyway, it wasn't until TODAY that I decided to actually look up the origin of that strange yellow powder that makes everything taste the same. And wow, I really shouldn't be surprised.

I know so many people who claim they don't like Indian cuisine and I always assume they're mistaken because HOW could you not love it?! I blame the "curry powder".

I'm thinking about bailing from music streaming services for a while (although I really like qobuz)...

but what's the state of the world currently if I was going to rip CDs onto some system?

Plex? I'm going to be using that for videos, so I guess I could start there?

(and yes I'm being lazy by not doing some web searching first)

Andrew,

@constantorbit I also use Jellyfin but exclusively for music - not videos. I like the variety of mobile apps for it. Currently I'm using Fintunes on Android. Jellyfin itself was super easy to install, and then I setup Tailscale with a public funnel address enabled for remote access from anywhere. That part was a bit more tedious, but Tailscale had good instructions.

Was looking into camera solutions to keep an eye on our dog when we're away from home but honestly I feel the best solution is still a laptop with a webcam. Nearly all the local storage you need with backup battery.

Andrew,

@grumpasaurus yes! My cheap, low tech cam solution when I was out of town for a few weeks was a webcam on a long USB extension cable connected to Linux running "Motion". I had it autosync the clips to my phone using Syncthing... 😅 With spotty phone service so this was perfect for keeping tabs. No live video of course.

I’m making some “fractions sensitivity training” warm up questions for grade five and six. Any particularly silly or subtle suggestions would be a big help. These are too boring.

A. How is 15min like $0.25?
B. How are three cat paws like 45min?
C. How is 12min like holding up one finger on one hand? .. or like $0.20?
D. How is one ant leg like 10 min?
F. How is holding up four fingers on one hand like 48min? … or like 8 dimes?

Ideas? #math #education #mathed

Andrew,

@sennoma @roduar @futurebird This one requires you to think of "an egg" as a part of a whole, which I didn't immediately. And if eggs are sold in cartons of 10 where you live it gets extra confusing! (Not a problem in the US of course)

Threads is preparing to venture deeper into the #fediverse. - @theverge_com

https://www.theverge.com/2024/2/4/24061012/threads-is-preparing-to-venture-deeper-into-the-fediverse

> That comes courtesy of Alessandro Paluzzi, who frequently reverse engineers and reveals Threads and Instagram features. The new option lets you turn fediverse sharing on and off at will and you can easily copy your username formatted for the decentralized Activity Pub social protocol.

Andrew,

@Ciantic @cubicgarden there are definitely flavors of Mastodon that similarly allow restricting federation. I run glitch-soc which provides a "local only" privacy option when making a post. Being able to control that at the profile level is interesting, and it makes sense if you're Threads and see yourself as something separate from the fediverse. At least they're giving an option for users to reach outside of their walled garden?

Andrew,

@alshafei by "even more dangerous threat to your phone" what are they referring to? Access to the dark web?? Telegram is certainly problematic, but this implies that even installing Tor browser is dangerous for my phone? 🤔

I remember loving the book "Surely You're Joking, My Feynman!" as a teenager so was excited to see a podcast miniseries on Feynman from Freakonomics. I'm not sure how this has much to do with economics but it's a good listen!

Have you heard about this? Do they glow in the dark? Is this a good thing?

I looked today. To order one bioluminescent #Petunia was $75 with 2 day FedEx shipping in the US. Kinda pricey considering they are an annual where I live.

Andrew,

@Serenity yes! Wired published a story on this last year. It's purely for fun, and apparently the USDA thinks the risk of the genes becoming invasive is minimal. 🤷‍♂️ And maybe it's actually useful as night lighting?

Well, the joke's on me, karma, and all the bullshit. Two days ago I said that I hated Microsoft and today my wife comes to me and says her employer is replacing the Mac she has been using for work the last 15 years with a Windows machine.

She asked me for advice on a "good" Windows laptop, that was "like a Mac" and all I could say was "It's going to run Windows, so you'll hate it no matter what."

Still trying to find a workaround for this issue...

Andrew,

@rasterweb 😑 I'm generally anti-apple because I want full control over my devices and I hate ecosystem lock-in... but even I would choose MacOS over Windows these days. I used to like Windows for the ability to tinker and have control, but Microsoft has so thoroughly trashed the OS with ads, forced defaults, forced updates, and more that you're now required to tinker to even make it halfway useable!

Andrew,

@rasterweb yep, my work windows laptop is how I've grown to hate it so much 😅

Why does a browser in #Android not know when you're typing in the URL field, and so proceeds to automatically add a space after a period?

That's pretty basic, you'd think they could figure out how to suppress that.

Spanish visa is APPROVED! 🎉 We have 90 days to get moved and all setup before we can collect our initial 1 year visa. So much to do! 😵‍💫

Time to make a checklist and timeline...

#movingtospain #expat #spain

Andrew,

6 weeks left until the big move. I think we've sold maybe 30% of our stuff. By the end my home office is going to be my laptop on a cardboard box!

#movingtospain #expat #spain

Andrew,

@ochaos yes I'm excited! We can't retire yet either but can work anywhere remotely. Downsizing in advance will certainly help for when you're ready to move. We're pretty minimalist and have a small space to begin with, but it still feels like a ton of stuff to get rid of when you're downsizing into rolling luggage!
