This is a smart approach. I think it's the same on Mastodon and Bluesky? Can anyone confirm or refute?

73ms,

@kevinrothrock yeah that is how it works with Mastodon. No notices. I assume the screenshot is referring to Bluesky's implementation.

This is how Ukrainians are starting to train to fly F-16s. Basic flight simulators using VR headsets give pilots an introduction to the Western fighter jet.

@hanse_mina this seems to be version with english subtitles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WgG51xawiE

Pretty much a consumer level sim setup but consumer level is pretty good these days with even VR widely available so you can operate a virtual cockpit too. Don't know what they have as software but probably something that is widely available and they mention using custom maps.

The fallout of the celebration of a SS-Waffen officer should have been an invitation to unravel the past from the present. We didn't do that.
https://www.bugeyedandshameless.com/p/yaroslav-hunka-canada

73ms,

@justinling Great article shedding some light on the very real complexities of the choices people in the nations that were caught between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had to face. Shkandrij's book also seems interesting.

Going into a bit more detail about why Polish poliicians might be angry enough to demand deportation could have been a good addition. Ukrainian nationalist movements were responsible for massacres targeting ethnic Poles estimated to have resulted in more than 100,000 dead in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia.

I would also be a little wary of making the conclusion that a good balance was achieved post-war with prosecuting war criminals, many got away with everything they had done because they were so many of them and limited appetite for investigation once the war was over and done with for various reasons.

  • 73ms,

@raymondpert the quote here seems a little sensationalist considering that the article says this was a deal with the brits who initiated the thing and asked other commonwealth countries to take in some of them.

Here is a good video giving more context : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UB_Gs-0dhOo

Having just watched a documentary series on Netflix about the Nazi einsatzgruppen that were responsible for carrying out a significant part of the holocaust it seems relevant to mention the vast majority of the SS men and others involved in those atrocities also escaped any consequences, going on to become policemen for example in postwar west Germany.

A monument outside St. Petersburg to Finnish soldiers killed in WWII (admittedly an unusual memorial for Russia) has disappeared. It was installed only in 2019. 130 Finnish soldiers are buried there. https://www.fontanka.ru/2023/09/23/72739181/

    image/jpeg

    73ms,

@kevinrothrock there are similar monuments in Finland for some soviet soldiers as well. At least one has been vandalized since the start of Russia's invasion but unlike in Russia in at least one case there have been no efforts by officials to remove them.

    73ms,

I don't think the point here is that the US 5% contribution has single handedly led to Russia losing 50%. The point is that the coalition as a whole are each spending relatively little compared to what the total cost to the Russians is. Ukraine is of course also paying a much heavier price than any of its western supporters who help it keep fighting.

Canon shows new VR360/180-3D Concept Camera (www.youtube.com)

This is just a concept camera, it doesnโ€™t have a product name, price or release date. No guarantees it will ever get released. Still nice to see what looks like a consumer focused VR camera again, all the other ones have been discontinued (except for Qoocam EGO, but thatโ€™s more 3D than VR).

    73ms,

Good to see at least something in this space. Maybe some day we can have 360 3D cameras with decent resolution for consumers as well.

@rikefranke Does it help if you note it is a limited free link to a paywalled post when posting the link or are they complaining either way? I could see not knowing it mostly being the issue.

    I bet it's a pretty large percentage.

    73ms,

@Mrfunkedude You can sort of check this from the Mastodon settings by going to follows and followers and selecting "followers" as well as "dormant" but I don't think you can filter by instance...

I wonder if there is any #fediverse tool that can take an account list and check whether the accounts are active. Would be quite useful.

    I'm halfway expecting #Mastodon users to demand a #ContentWarning for #TextFormatting.

Like, everyone outside of Mastodon must issue a #CW if they use

    • bold type
    • italics
    • a code block
    • a bullet-point list

or anything like that because it irritates those who are still used to the #Fediverse only being old-school Mastodon. You know, just like #LongPosts with over #500Characters.

    73ms,

@jupiter_rowland it is true that would be better from a similar standpoint from which it is better to move to firefox for example, I suppose. There is nothing inherently wrong about using Mastodon though.

If you have a WordPress-powered blog, you can turn it into a Fediverse server and people will be able to follow the blog from Mastodon etc.

More info on how to do this here:

    โžก๏ธ https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/

This works through the AcitvityPub for WordPress plug-in, which has just been updated to version 1.0.0:

    โžก๏ธ https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/

The plug-in is by @pfefferle in association with , one of the major players behind WordPress itself.

    73ms,

@feditips of course but my point was that for it would be best to have the plugin include widgets/whatever that don't even require that. Like I said when checking out a few WP sites that had this installed I noticed many of them had nothing to indicate the sites had ActivityPub.
