Should anyone feel the urge to once again blame #Fairphone for their โunethical business modelโ consisting in selling Android smartphones, this is for you: They now sell the Fairphone 4 with @murena's ungoogled, free and open-source /e/ OS pre-installed! ๐
This is how Ukrainians are starting to train to fly F-16s. Basic flight simulators using VR headsets give pilots an introduction to the Western fighter jet.
Pretty much a consumer level sim setup but consumer level is pretty good these days with even VR widely available so you can operate a virtual cockpit too. Don't know what they have as software but probably something that is widely available and they mention using custom maps.
After too much time spent on google I finally found this lightweight GUI + CLI tool that finds locally installed games (yes including non-steam games running under proton) and thought Iโd spread the gospel!...
@justinling Great article shedding some light on the very real complexities of the choices people in the nations that were caught between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union had to face. Shkandrij's book also seems interesting.
Going into a bit more detail about why Polish poliicians might be angry enough to demand deportation could have been a good addition. Ukrainian nationalist movements were responsible for massacres targeting ethnic Poles estimated to have resulted in more than 100,000 dead in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia.
I would also be a little wary of making the conclusion that a good balance was achieved post-war with prosecuting war criminals, many got away with everything they had done because they were so many of them and limited appetite for investigation once the war was over and done with for various reasons.
@raymondpert the quote here seems a little sensationalist considering that the article says this was a deal with the brits who initiated the thing and asked other commonwealth countries to take in some of them.
Having just watched a documentary series on Netflix about the Nazi einsatzgruppen that were responsible for carrying out a significant part of the holocaust it seems relevant to mention the vast majority of the SS men and others involved in those atrocities also escaped any consequences, going on to become policemen for example in postwar west Germany.
A monument outside St. Petersburg to Finnish soldiers killed in WWII (admittedly an unusual memorial for Russia) has disappeared. It was installed only in 2019. 130 Finnish soldiers are buried there. https://www.fontanka.ru/2023/09/23/72739181/
@kevinrothrock there are similar monuments in Finland for some soviet soldiers as well. At least one has been vandalized since the start of Russia's invasion but unlike in Russia in at least one case there have been no efforts by officials to remove them.
I don't think the point here is that the US 5% contribution has single handedly led to Russia losing 50%. The point is that the coalition as a whole are each spending relatively little compared to what the total cost to the Russians is. Ukraine is of course also paying a much heavier price than any of its western supporters who help it keep fighting.
Zelensky joins Canadian ovation for veteran who fought with Nazis. The Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation on Friday to a 98-year-old immigrant from Ukraine who fought in a Third Reich military formation accused of war crimes.
"In posts to the blog dated 2011 and 2010, Hunka describes 1941 to 1943 as the happiest years of his life and compares the veterans of his unit, who were scattered across the world, to Jews."
@kevinrothrock This is pretty bad. I can only imagine most of them didn't understand what they were applauding, I wonder who arranged for Hunka to be there and who agreed to it because while everyone should have known, they had to know...
This is just a concept camera, it doesnโt have a product name, price or release date. No guarantees it will ever get released. Still nice to see what looks like a consumer focused VR camera again, all the other ones have been discontinued (except for Qoocam EGO, but thatโs more 3D than VR).
I am on three social media platforms but itโs only here that people keep complaining about paywall articles (btw, I always post gift articles, but they can only be opened so many times). Why does Mastodon feel journalists donโt need to get paid?
@rikefranke Does it help if you note it is a limited free link to a paywalled post when posting the link or are they complaining either way? I could see not knowing it mostly being the issue.
@VikingChieftain@chrisschmitz ATACMS isso close to official that seems like it would be a huge blunder from the US media if it turned out to be false and Taurus does seem more likely now since Germany has always wanted to only follow USA's lead. The Abrams exact timeframe is rumor but their delivery being fairly soon is confirmed.
I am surprised, my expectations are low with these kinds of projects but this actually looks good. Bit like the Mirror's Edge VR I've always been dreaming of, guess that is what you get when you go first person with Assassin's Creed.
Oy! So this instance is now running Mastodon 4.2 which among other things has a "search" that works more like actual search :) Y'all might want to go to Settings -> Public Profile -> Privacy and enable indexing of your posts.
@BaldSavant@aras I wish it was opt out at least for new users. Would be a compromise that makes it much more useful and still lets people stay hidden from it
@Mrfunkedude You can sort of check this from the Mastodon settings by going to follows and followers and selecting "followers" as well as "dormant" but I don't think you can filter by instance...
I wonder if there is any #fediverse tool that can take an account list and check whether the accounts are active. Would be quite useful.
Like, everyone outside of Mastodon must issue a #CW if they use
bold type
italics
a code block
a bullet-point list
or anything like that because it irritates those who are still used to the #Fediverse only being old-school Mastodon. You know, just like #LongPosts with over #500Characters.
@jupiter_rowland it is true that would be better from a similar standpoint from which it is better to move to firefox for example, I suppose. There is nothing inherently wrong about using Mastodon though.
@feditips of course but my point was that for it would be best to have the plugin include widgets/whatever that don't even require that. Like I said when checking out a few WP sites that had this installed I noticed many of them had nothing to indicate the sites had ActivityPub.
