#Capitalism is exploitation. There's no way you can have a #capitalist system that doesn't exploit workers. Even if you try to make it more tolerable through policies and legislation, the inherent nature #workers having to work for those who exclusively own the means of production in order to survive will always be exploitative.

Three cheers for the minimum wage - an unusual economic policy that can be said to be a pretty unalloyed success.

Against a background of negative economics research conclusions & a hostile Tory opposition, Tony Blair's govt.s introduction of the minimum wage has been progressive & at least done something for the poorest workers.

Sometimes a simple policy can work even when the economists don't want it to.....

Given the Bank of England's past remarks about above inflation pay rises... I'm guessing they'll have some stiff words for Centrica as their CEO's pay nearly doubled year on year to £8.2m in 2023...

Oh no, that's right, he's a hardworking senior manager, not like those greedy & pesky workers, gazing at the £100k Jeremy Hunt thinks is difficult to live on, and wondering how they're going to pay their mortgage or rent.

Sometimes there is some confusion about what academic researchers & activists mean when they talk about 'intersectionality'.

Here is a report from the Fawcett Society that is a great illustration of the intersection of prejudice; it looks at the prejudicial environment encounters by women of colour.

In other words the forces of sexism & racism compound each other to constrain & limit their career development... 'discrimination squared'?

So, I'm not sure if this is cause or effect, but its notable that new longitudinal research suggest, school bullies tend to earn more later in life....

I've remarked on the rubbish management in many British institutions before, so now (taking pay as a rough guide) we can see that bullies somehow are rising to the top & we might expect them to carry on with their school behaviour in the workplace.

Will changing attitudes start to constrain them?

For a range of reasons including the continuing rise in the long-term sick (a trend that notably predates the pandemic), Britain is the only G7 country with a lower employment rate than before Covid hit.

There's lots of talk of 'incentivising' people back to work... but lets (for a minute) turn it round the other way.

If the 'demand' for work has dropped, perhaps we might look at work as the problem;

If it was a product & demand was down only an idiot would blame the consumer!

Here's a new report from the Work Foundation on the problem of zero hours contracts - a couple of key findings:

Young workers (16–24) are 5 times more likely to be on zero-hours contracts

Young workers who are not students are still 3.5 times more likely to be on zero-hour contracts.

Black workers are 2.7 times more likely than white workers to be on zero-hour contracts;

Women are 1.2 times more likely than men to be on zero-hour contracts.

Looks like the BoE/MPC will start using the rise in he minimum wage (and thus, its contribution to their notion of the wage-price spiral) as a reason to once again delay reducing interest rates.

Of course, the Sado-monetarists of Threadneedle Street are just casting round for any reason they can find not to start reducing the pain for workers;

If you think this is about monetary policy, recall how relaxed they are about maintained/increased profits (as opposed to wages)!

More Tory declaratory politics:

Two years ago admit a scandal about the under-payment of P&O seafarers, the Govt. pledged to close the loophole in UK employment law that made it impossible to prosecute the firm;

Two years later, guess what? the practice continues & loophole remains.

Once the media circus moves on, so the Tories don't bother to do what they promised.... or perhaps more accurately moved at a glacial pace to allow P&O to continue to profit.

The collective action issue in capitalism:

collective action by workers: bad, disrupts labour markets, undermines competitive pricing of labour.

collective action by investors, via stock markets & shareholding: vital to the workings of capitalism & must be protected & fostered at ever step.

It doesn't have to be this way, but it is.

The effects of climate change on workers
When heat kills (documentary) is "the story of the many migrant laborers who arrive in Qatar in good health, but who die on the job. The deaths are officially put down to natural causes. But they are linked to the inhumane temperatures that prevail in the region."

"Whether it’s construction workers in the Middle East, parcel delivery drivers in the US or farm laborers in Central America - they’re all being pushed to their physical limits. An increasing number of epidemiologists, doctors and economists are warning of a risk that’s also heading Europe’s way: heat can kill."

For more than eight decades, the rhythm of a 40-hour workweek has been a (mostly) common experience for workers of all stripes across America. But Sen. Bernie Sanders this week introduced a bill that would shorten the workweek to 32 hours — with the same pay and benefits. Would the reduction in hours threaten small businesses or be a boon to workers? If you're outside the U.S., what is the workweek like where you live? Read about the bill in this report from AP and share your thoughts in the comments: https://flip.it/7eMhc3#

To those who say "capitalism doesn't force people to do anything. They have free will", if someone put a gun to the head of someone, would that not be a use of force? And how would you feel if the gunman said "I'm not forcing you to do anything. You have the freewill not to give me your money." But if you don't then you'll die, just like the worker will die if they don't do what the capitalist says.
