Alaska heat: Fairbanks Airport Tuesday 1230pm AKST up to 44F (6.7C). This is a new record high temperature for Feb 20, previous record of 41F (5.0C) set in 2008. It’s also the highest February temperature in 20 years. Climate observations in the Fairbanks area since late 1904. #akwx#Winter2024@Climatologist49@CarrieinFbx@anisian@debmcqueen@dboo@mivox
Winter 2023-24 climate summary for the Arctic is now out on the Alaska and Arctic Climate Newsletter. Yep, warm (relatively speaking). #Arctic#Climate#Winter2024
January 2024 temperatures in Alaska averaged above normal on the North Slope and most of western Alaska, below normal over the Interior and Southcentral and generally close to normal in Southeast. In many regions there were big ranges between early and late in the month. Statewide temperatures extremes at communities varied from 57F (13.9C) at Metlakatla to -59F (-50.6C) at Allakaket, and both occurred on Jan 28. #akwx#Climate#Winter2024@Climatologist49@pat_wx
Well that's what we want to see on January 18: Quinhagak, Alaska, on the east shore of Kuskokwim Bay (southwest Alaska, Yupik county) has no significant snow cover. Temperatures the first half of January in the region were about 15F (8C) above normal and there was some rain in the mix too. Image courtesy of FAA. #akwx#Winter2024 @Climatologist49
Anchorage Airport is at 123.6 inches of snow for the season. The record is 134.5 inches. Ten years since 1953 have had enough snow to set a new record. So knowing nothing else, it’s unlikely but by no means out of the question that this finishes as Anchorage’s snowiest winter of record. #akwx#snow#Climate#Winter2024#Alaska@Climatologist49@EBecker@patrace@EyeOnAlaska@sbmorgan
Fairbanks, Alaska high temperature today of -9F (-22.8C) is the second lowest leap day high temperature in the past 116 years. Only February 29, 1956, with a high of -16F (-26.7C), was colder. #akwx#Winter2024 @CarrieinFbx@debmcqueen@leepetersen
January 2024 was significantly warmer than the 1991-2020 normal across the eastern Canadian Arctic, northern and western Alaska and far northeast Russia, and far western Siberia. Parts of eastern Siberia, northwest Canada and the Nordic Arctic were colder than normal. Overall, January ranked as the 14th warmest for the #Arctic (north of 60ºN) since 1950. Do I spy with my little eye the sun at Utqiaġvik? First sunrise of2024 at Alaska's northernmost community occurred Tuesday. Today, sunrise was 1249pm and sunset was at 229pm, so yes, this faint orange glow could be the sun. Weather at pix time -15F (-26C), west wind sustained at 24 mph yielding a wind chill of -44F (-42C). Image courtesy FAA. #akwx#Winter2024@cinderbdt@ajatnuvuk@Climatologist49
Alaska’s Cold Snap 2024 is done. In some areas the past two weeks featured the coldest sustained weather in 15 years. At others, a day or two of intense cold was more prominent. While quite cold for the 21st century, this event doesn’t even rate an asterisk compared to 20th century cold snaps. Lowest community temperature was at perennially cold spot of Chicken at -62F (-52.2C). #akwx#Arctic#Cold#Winter2024#Alaska @Climatologist49
With warmer air now in place there's little chance of 2024 finishing up as the snowiest January on record. All that shoveling and nothing but a sore back. 😩 #akwx#ExtremeWeather#Winter2024
Always amazing how precipitation (rain plus the water in melted snow) can vary in complex terrain, not just storm to storm but even across several months. November 2023 through January 2024
Anchorage Airport: 220 percent of normal precipitation and the highest NDJ total of record.
Meanwhile, 35 miles away at
Girdwood: precipitation was a little bit below normal (94%) #akwx#Climate#Winter2024@Climatologist49@EyeOnAlaska
