January 2024 was significantly warmer than the 1991-2020 normal across the eastern Canadian Arctic, northern and western Alaska and far northeast Russia, and far western Siberia. Parts of eastern Siberia, northwest Canada and the Nordic Arctic were colder than normal. Overall, January ranked as the 14th warmest for the #Arctic (north of 60ºN) since 1950. Alaska’s Cold Snap 2024 is done. In some areas the past two weeks featured the coldest sustained weather in 15 years. At others, a day or two of intense cold was more prominent. While quite cold for the 21st century, this event doesn’t even rate an asterisk compared to 20th century cold snaps.
