Je ramène ma science pour un truc rigolo. Le système métrique c’est une belle contribution de la Revution, et concrètement la loi du 18 germinal an III sous la Convention. mais en typographie on utilise une mesure: c’est le point typographique qui sert notamment à définir les corps des caractères (12 points par exemple) la hauteur des lignes, etc.
À partir de 1770, le point Didot, qui vaut à peu près 0,376 mm se généralise assez vite dans l’imprimerie. Mais, pour les Conventionnels, 20 ans plus tard, ça ne va pas ! Il faut un point métrique, y a pas de raison. Donc un point de 0,4 mm, et voilà tout ! Et que ça saute !
Les imprimeurs (privés) : C’est ça ! Comptez sur nous pour renouveler tout notre matos, pour une lubie des Conventionnels ! On a que ça à foutre !
Moralité : les seuls à avoir adopté le point métrique, c’est l’Imprimerie nationale. 😋 et l’IN l’a conservé jusqu’au XXe…
Bon, ils se sont un peu plantés sur la mesure, et il fait un chouïa moins que 0,4mm, mais à peine, et c’était l’idée en tout cas.
Qwerty keyboards are laid out to keep the arms of a mechanical typewriter from hitting each other as you type, because letters that are more commonly used side by side are farther apart on the "keyboard".
Thumb typing has different constraints. There's probably a case for a different keyboard layout, now, to reduce common typos.
Who would research new layouts and the demand? One of the O/S publishers?
For my work, I play with US geography all day, everyday. I misspell New Hampshire as "New Hampshite" every single time and I can't even be mad about it because it always makes me laugh.
