Laisvės Alėja (Independence Way) is a fully pedestrianised street that runs east-west across most of Kaunas.
It is lined with shops, restaurants, cafe/bars, museums, outdoor dining areas, and historical sites (such as the old Presidential Palace, which was used from 1918 until the 1930s). Three-to-four floors of apartments can be found above the shops.
A small tree-lined park can be found in the middle of the street, with bicycle paths and outdoor dining areas on the sides.
During summer, the bars and cafes fill up as lunch approaches, and they remain busy well into the evening (with twilight in Summer sometime around 10:30pm).
Cuisine varies from traditional Lithuanian fare (such as Cepeliniai and Saltibarciai) to modern Italian, Turkish, Georgian, Japanese, American, Thai, and more. (That includes these delicious burritos, tuna salads, and ribs.)
The street begins as Vilnius Gatve at the town hall square in the old city, just near Kaunas Castle and the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris Rivers.
It continues for roughly 2.3 kilometres across almost the entire length of the city, to the historic Church of St Michael the Archangel (Sv. Arkangelo Mykolo Baznycia).
It is bisected by a second pedestrianised street running north-south that links it to the war museum, the Zalgris basketball arena, and the university.

#DeSantis is destroying the economy and tourism in #Florida. Seriously, who wants to go to #Disney World when there are Nazis waving their flags in front of the entrance.

#DeSantis#DeStupid is definitely destroying the #Florida#tourism and #economy. You get the government you vote for. Sadly those that didn't vote for this or didn't vote at all suffer as well. *sigh 😕

“Love the Philippines” even when it’s Switzerland, Indonesia, UAE, Thailand, and a host of locations in other countries that are used in a promotional video for the Southeast Asian country.
The Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DoT) was left red faced after the errant video containing footage of foreign locations purporting to be The Philippines was published on Facebook last week. Angry Filipinos quickly called out the government department for allowing the video to be published.
The DoT apologized and condemned the release of the video once they realized the issue. It was part of the country’s latest tourism campaign which launched last month.
Meanwhile, DDB Group Philippines, the agency responsible for producing the video had told the DoT that all the footage used were original but later admitted that those were stock videos taken from content provider Storyblocks. The agency took the video down in short order.
The agency apologetically said that the video was meant to be a mood video to show what the final work is supposed to look like. Mood videos are not meant for public release.
Crafting amber into art and jewellery has a long history in the coastal areas of Lithuania, around the Curonian Spit, Palanga, and Klaipeda.
In around 98 AD, the Roman historian Tacitus wrote the following about what he called the "Aesti" (eastern) tribes who lived on the "right bank" of the Baltic Sea:
"Upon the right of the [Baltic] Sea the Aestian nations reside, who use the same customs and attire with the [Germans]... They even search the deep, and of all the rest are the only people who gather amber. They call it glesum, and find it amongst the shallows and upon the very shore."
Here are some examples of the exquisite amber jewellery currently on display at the amber museum (Palangos Gintaro Muziejus) in Palanga, Lithuania.
The museum itself is in a beautifully restored century-old mansion in the city gardens, just a short walk from both the beach and the town's main promenade.
More unique Lithuanian vernacular architecture, this time from Neringa and Nida, on the Curonian Spit.
The distinctive timber cottages are painted maroon and blue.
The town itself is located on a spit between the Baltic Sea and a freshwater lagoon, with many trees and impeccable white sand beaches. It's a breathtaking location. (I'll aim to post some more photos soon.)
"Under mounting pressure from #rightwing parties to declare a #StateOfEmergency, which would give authorities extra powers to ban #demonstrations and limit free movement, the government is desperate to avoid a repeat of 2005, when the death of two boys of African origin in a police chase sparked three weeks of rioting." #DeathOfNahel
"Days of violent #protests across #France after the fatal police shooting of a teenager have started to impact the country's #tourism sector, with #hotels and #restaurants facing cancellations while some have also suffered damage in the unrest." #DeathOfNahel
The new #tourism slogan and brand campaign was created by DDB Philippines Inc., for a sum of 50 million pesos, as per the published terms of reference of DOT’s Notices of Bids issued in February. The new slogan replaces #itsmorefuninthephilippines created in 2012 by BBDO guerrero for 6 million pesos.
