Frank Binder's 1948 Tram Kaleidoscope. I love the way geometric shapes are used to unify the inside of the tram with the street outside. On display at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Sydney's Museum station is an underrated gem.

Instead of ads for modern products, the billboards are all old 20th century advertisements. Some, for businesses that no longer exist, such as Mark Foy's department store.

The tree cover in Sydney's Hyde Park is so lush and cool on a hot day.

(And yes, to everyone reading this from interstate or overseas: I know naming the big park in the Sydney CBD "Hyde Park" was not exactly a creative choice.)

(I'll also refrain from making the obvious jokes about Sydney's asbestos crisis.)

The lost art of hand-written public transport signs

From an exhibition at the Sydney Bus Museum:

"Sign writing was once an important trade. The signs needed to direct bus traffic and provide timetable and destination information for Sydney's bus network were formerly painted by hand at Randwick Depot.

"Many of those employed to do this work considered it to be their job for life. Their skill is evident, but it was time consuming and expensive to produce signs this way, and by the 1980s the writing was on the wall for this trade.

"Various printing techniques have replaced the hand painted sign in almost all situations in the bus and transport industry, but if you look around the museum, you will see many examples of their craft."

Warning: This post is about to make you feel very old.

Think for a moment where you watched the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics.

Well, one of the busses from those games is now on display at the Sydney Bus Museum.

But wait, what is a bus from the Sydney Olympics doing in a transport museum?

Well, because the 2000 Olympics were held almost a quarter of a century ago.

I did warn you this post would make you feel old.

From gadgetbahn to museum piece...

You know that self-driving bus the NSW government was trialling back in 2014?

Well, you can now see it in the Sydney Bus Museum.

There's a good display on them at the Australian Museum, which is well worth the price of (free) admission.

A local high school in Kaunas, Lithuania, along with some photos of the street it's on. It's closed to traffic, so the kids can walk or ride their bikes to school.

Notice also there's no giant asphalt car park they need to cross to get to it, and no SUVs parked out the front. It's in a medium-density mixed-use neighbourhood, with shops and cafes on the ground floor of neighbouring buildings, and apartments above.

The lack of cars allows for trees in the middle of the street.

A twilight ferry ride on the Parramatta River RiverCat service.

Ferries are not a mode of public transport that most people often think about.

Yet in Sydney, ferries across Sydney Harbour and down the Parramatta River are part of the public transport network. You can go on a ferry ride — including past the Opera House and under the Harbour Bridge — using the city's Opal integrated transport ticketing system.

With the NATO summit being held in Vilnius this week, two buildings you're likely to see a lot of on the news are the Presidential Palace, and the Old Town Hall (final two photos).

What you might not know is that the courtyard of the Presidential Palace is usually open to the public for free. (Well, at least when there's not a gathering of international leaders on.)

The Presidential Palace is located close to a number of the city's main landmarks, including the Cathedral Square, the Palace of the Grand Dukes, and Gedimino Pilies. It's also across the street from the main campus of Vilnius University.

The palace grounds can be accessed via a laneway called Universiteto Gatve.

Continue south down that laneway a few blocks (as it becomes Gaono Gatve, then Stikliu Gatve) and you arrive at the town hall.

The three cats in the town square in Marijampole, Lithuania.

The legend goes that if you pat the heads of all three cats, they'll grant you a wish.

But there's one condition.

The stereotype of people from Marijampole is they're very frugal.

These Marijampole cats are no exception!

But so long as you don't ask these cats for money or any financial favours, they'll grant your wish.

You can get a bird's-eye view of the old town of Kaunas by crossing the Vytautas the Great Bridge (Vytauto Didziojo Tiltas), then taking the historic Aleksoto funicular tram up the hill to the Aleksoto hill lookout.

Along the Vaiguvos Upe Gatve (the river road of Vaiguvos), near the Nemunas River between Kaunas and Marijampole in southwestern Lithuania.

The locals actually access their homes by driving along this shallow creek.

Along the river road are some fantastic examples of local vernacular architecture, with traditional rustic cottages that haven't changed much in over a century.

The surrounding woods are filled with birch, pine, and oak trees, along with a range of local wildlife.
