Maha Zeidan, the president of the Graduate Student Association of the University of #Toledo (Ohio), gives a solemn and powerful speech to remind the graduates and all others of the responsibility and ability to act for peace.
Anybody need bus tickets #Madrid–#Toledo for today that apparently can be used in any Alsa bus? My name and my wife’s are on the tickets but if you look “suitable” the driver probably won’t check.
We overslept and missed the bus I had bought tickets for, and I bought new ones. (Not hugely expensive.) Only later I noticed that the actual tickets apparently are valid on any of the dozens of departures per day. (The site I bought them from claimed they were bound to the chosen departure.)

Reminds me a bit of the stained glass window in the railway station in Eisenach, recalling that city's historical connection to the automobile industry
"Toledo is not Madrid" says Mauricio Delichman, as he shows an archival source for his fascinating paper with David Gonzalez Agudo on wages, living standards & skill premia in Toledo 1517-1800, at the economichistory.ca conference hosted by Shari Eli & Laura Salisbury at the Munk School in Toronto! @econhist@economics@laborecon#Spain#Toledo#wages#LivingStandards#skill#archives#history#histodons
I find it interesting that the three areas affected by the #UAW#strike have trended toward the #GOP since the 1980s. Macomb County #Michigan has only voted #Democratic 4 times since 1968. It backed #Trump twice, by similar 53.5% margins. In St. Charles County #Missouri where #Wentzville is the largest city, Trump won in 2020 with 58% of the vote. #biden took Lucas County, #Ohio which is dominated by #Toledo. However, the three surrounding suburban counties went to Trump by about 60%
I mention this to point out that #union members in many cases support #gop candidates whose policies are inimical to their own interests. Those policies are the very ones that have put them in the #economic situation in which they now find themselves. I’m willing to bet that even if they were to get everything they’re demanding, which they won’t, they’ll turn around and support #trump again. So pardon me if my sympathy is limited.
In the UK we have a similar situation with the RMT rail workers trade union. They affiliate to a group which puts up candidates against the Labour Party at elections.
Excellent video from More Perfect Union describing the shady tactics that the Big 3 have been using to take advantage of their workers
What Jeep Doesn’t Want You to Know
Jeep relies on an army of temp workers who make half the rate of full-time employees, despite doing the same jobs. Some have been “temporary” for 5.5 years. If Jeep doesn’t offer a path to full-time status, thousands of workers could strike this week.
