Welp the bomb has been dropped, former #firefish team members basically telling us what we suspected is true firefish is basicly dead, since this is out now i might as well talk about some firefish things even tho i hate this happening i don't feel like i should continue to stay quite on some of the issues, as part of my promise to the firefish devs i've talked to i will not mention some things that i know of but will tell my personal experiences with the project and why i think the project is unlikely to recover.
well lets start of with the apparent issue, firefish is kainoa's project and as such he is fully in charge of the project, the issue is that firefish has been seemingly developed in a way that's basically right out of the Portal Quotes book
"I'll be honest, we're throwing science at the wall here to see what sticks. No idea what it'll do. Probably nothing"
this Quote perfectly describes what firefish has been doing over the last releases, stuff like rust was added never to be touched again, scylladb was hyped and worked on (apparently because discord uses it?) just to be basically scrapped, and rewrite in bun was planned?
the attitude was basically adding stuff and making changes without fixing the underlying issues, firefish suffers from alot and by alot i mean a fuck ton of technical issues these won't magically be solved by rewriting it, or changing db sure rewrittes and switching to a better db can help (scylladb is not better for a thing like firefish btw) but that's just putting duck tape on the issue, instead a focus should have been to work on the underlying issues fixing whats causing the issues, like the monster db querys not to mention the fact that some things like scylladb were apparently done even tho multiple firefish devs adviced against it (not a firefish dev can't confirm this but ive been told such)
but also as we have seen firefish is extremely dependent on Kainoa being there, without him being there not much can be done on the firefish side of the team which is also very bad a project should not collapse as hard as firefish because the main dev is missing for multiple weeks, thats why in the ideal case u have multiple project leads
but even if kainoa comes back and everything returns to normal for a bit if firefish does not majorly change their attitude towards development and organization the project will just continue to crash straight into a wall
that said don't start harassing any of the firefish devs or even kainoa
firefish is a foss hobby project and projects come and go
as of writing this post both main firefish instances firefish.social and stop.voring.me are still down or up but don't federate and|or otherwise unusable
EDIT: if you are currently running firefish its highly recommended u consider migrating to either Sharkey, Iceshrimp or Catodon, ofc im going to recommend #sharkey but please do your own research
Okay, bisheriges kleines Fazit: #sharkey macht gleich zu Anfang vieles richtig. Viele Dinge sind wie bei Firefish aber es gibt einige Kleinigkeiten die mir bisher sehr gut gefallen, sei es der Videoplayer, den man bei in Beiträgen eingebetteten Videolinks per Schaltfläche ein- und ausblenden oder gar in einem Fenster anzeigen lassen kann, das ein- oder ausblenden von Antworten direkt in der Chronik, ohne erst in die Einstellungen zu müssen, wie auch das ein- bzw. ausblenden von Renotes. Auch dass man hier im Drive eine Detailansicht der Dateien hat (vor Allem bei Bildern praktisch) ist toll.
Es gibt noch vieles was ich ausprobieren muss, u.A. wie die Mastodon API eingebunden ist (Stichwort Apps wie Fedilab etc.) aber was ich bis jetzt sehe gefällt mir sehr 😊

That said instead of shilling and hyping sharkey, u should actualy help the project by making issues, making pr's or just involving yourself in the project any other-way, having a community that is actively involved is way better than high user numbers
#Firefish hat sich aus #Misskey entwickelt, hat einige neue Ideen rein gebracht und den "asiatischen Touch" für uns leichter verdaulich gemacht.
#Iceshrimp ist ein Fork von Firefish 1.0.3, was wert auf Stabilisierung des Codes legt (also Bugs bereinigt bevor es an neue Features geht), ansonsten sich aber sehr stark nach FF anfühlt.
#Sharkey startete offenbar mit der Prämisse, dass der Code von FF inzwischen kaputt ist, und deshalb wurde so zu sagen zurück gespult: Sie setzen wieder auf Misskey auf und wollen eigene Änderungen so machen, dass sie Änderungen von Misskey einfach re-integrieren können. Das fühlt sich noch sehr nach Misskey an, aber die Dev Version sieht schon deutlich interessanter aus und zeigt, dass sie tatsächlich Community Wünsche umsetzen wollen.
#Catalon ist ein Projekt eines Teils des FF Teams. Laut eigenen Aussagen wollen sie trotzdem an FF weiter mitarbeiten. Catalon ist jedenfalls ein Projekt, dass in naher Zukunft nicht veröffentlicht werden wird.
So ist aktuell mein Wissensstand.
Aktuell sind all diese Projekte noch recht jung, deshalb ist es schwer abzuschätzen, welches davon ausreichend Puste haben wird.
Ich muss mir IceShrimp (und das Team) noch mal genauer ansehen, aber Sharkey geht in eine Richtung, die mir zumindest aktuell am viel versprechendsten aussieht.
Aber.. Firefish 1.0.5.RC läuft bei mir (und vielen anderen) gerade völlig reibungslos. Es gibt für mich also gerade keinen Grund zur Hektik. Ich teste und beobachte vermutlich noch ein bisschen die Alternativen. :)
.. und irgendwie warte ich auch noch auf ein offizielles Statement vom Firefish Team. Bisher kenne ich nur die Sorgen Dritter ..
Fuck yeah! it is possible to backfill posts from Akkoma into Sharkey when doing an inplace migration! I need to smooth it out, but successfully pulled posts from my first test migration over. Still planning a more indepth full scale test2 this weekend.
As it is, the timestamps on the post are the time of import. My initial test account didn't have many posts to verify with, but that's fine. That's what the full scale test this weekend is for. The core works though, which is fucking cool :apartyblob:
Ich habe vorhin mal ein wenig mit #Sharkey herum gestestet, ich fand es bisher .. leider enttäuschend.
Verglichen mit #Firefish fühlt es sich wie ein (teilweise erhebliches) Downgrade an. Das ist schade, denn die Idee, eng am #Misskey Code zu bleiben, ist natürlich gut! Es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, das weiter zu beobachten. :)
Ich werde mir als nächstes wohl #IceShrimp ansehen. Das ist eine Weiterentwicklung bzw eher Stabilisierung von #Firefish 1.0.3. Die Devs wollen fixen was da ist und gebraucht wird, anstatt auf immer neue Features zu setzen. Dürfte mir deutlich besser passen, aber es kann halt irgendwann auch "den selben Tod sterben", wie offenbar Firefish gerade: Zu wenige Devs.
Na mal schauen. Im Moment schnurrt meine Firefish Instanz ja, also keine Eile von Nöten. 🙂
@uwe@rebel@fedibikes_de Meine Versuche enden immer damit, dass bei den Gruppen steht „In Bearbeitung“ und es dabei auch bleibt - leider. Habe es nochmal getestet und keine Änderung. Bei #Sharkey geht es problemlos - dafür kann ich mit meinet App ( #MonaApp) keine Nachrichten absetzen. Das ist schon schade, dass mit einer App für #Mastodon nicht alles ghet ist schon klart, aber das Versenden von Nachrichten sollte m. E. schon funktionieren. Geht bei #Firefish und #Friendica ja auch.

@underlap@hcj#Sharkey, a direct fork of Misskey 13, has added imports for numerous account types. I’ve personally tried the Twitter, Mastodon, Firefish, and Instagram imports and they worked - including the attached media if available. Imported notes aren’t federated and lose replies, favorites and boost counts.
