First test today with a bone needle I've made, and its result.
The shape creates a good amount of skin trauma without placing the ink exactly how I want it. I think I'll make some shaping adjustments next time, but overall I'm pleased that it worked.

So, I had to talk about #Sparta! A warrior society focused on war, women had more rights than their #Athenian counterparts -- and were encouraged to be physically fit and prepared to fight to defend their homeland.
Sparta
Unlike their Greek counterparts, the women of Sparta had a lot more freedom and status. They were educated, since they would be in charge of keeping the homeland running smoothly while the men were at war – but they were also strong and able to defend themselves and their homeland.
Spartan men and women lived in separate quarters – even while married. Married couples would leave their respective quarters to procreate, and Spartan wives were required to have short hair and sometimes wore men’s clothing.
Amongst married couples, the Spartans were relatively #polyamorous, and women were not punished for infidelity.
Something I would love to know more about are the #ElusinianMysteries. But thanks to the cult's secrecy (and #Christianity), we may never know all the details...
Elusinian Mysteries
There were two Eleusinian rites – the Lesser One, and the Greater One. While the details of these rites were a carefully guarded secret, what is known is that the Greater Rite took place over many days, involved #music and #dancing, #sacrifices of grain and a bull, #ritual purification in a river, and the consumption of a #SacredBeverage that was believed to be #hallucinogenic.
The beverage, known as #kykeon, was made from #barley, #pennyroyal, and other ingredients.
How do you like to say goodbye? To pieces of your life? To stages, places, hopes or dreams? Are there any #rituals you do to let go of things that no longer serve you and move forward in a healthy way? Asking for a friend who needs ideas and whose brain does well with examples. #grief#spirituality

In general, how do you feel about exchanging holiday and birthday gifts? Only say you're neutral if you're truly 50/50. We all have specific contexts where we see rituals as burdensome or affirming.
I find getting gifts exhausting because I've never needed much to enjoy life, but even when I get something I have no use for, I'm naturally inclined to try and find a creative use for it. Discovering novel uses for unwanted things is something I find joy in.
That was fun and challenging for years, but eventually the backlog of stuff overwhelms you and ever since 2020, I've maxed out on my ability to deal with any stress I don't need to deal with even if it's creative stress.
I used to enjoy giving gifts though and I think I will get back there again, but because I'm so allergic to getting stuff myself I put a lot of thought and energy into it and I just don't have that kind of time and energy lately.

Something spurred my partner to begin building a temple to Osiris, and this temple site was the location of the altar we erected for our Dia de Muertos celebration. It was fitting, the idea that offerings were being made both to our ancestors and the god who watched over the underworld.
The altar I hand painted with symbols related to Egyptian, Western occult, and Meso-American systems. This practice of ours is growing oddly eclectic, but somehow feels placed and connected with the landbase despite its tenuosity of place literally.
The temple site itself is an island 14 feet in diameter, hand carved from the land and built up by my partner. The 'moat' around it is encircled with rocks, and he likewise created a spiral path off of one of our walking paths to enter the temple. We've planted four marigold plants and a date palm at strategic points along this path. You enter the temple from the East, and face West as you worship.
There are plans to build a structure here, but for now it is freestanding, an altar in the middle of our land, in the middle of the desert, covered still in marigolds and offered seeds, petals and incense.
This morning my daughter & I walked out there, and sat with the altar for the first time since the event. I offered new flowers, seeds, and scattered petals. My daughter made herself busy arranging flowers on the ground in quite an intentional way, although she can't tell me about the designs in her head yet. I sat and meditated for a few moments below the altar, as the sun rose over the valley.
I think that this is to become a daily ritual. It's been a long time since I've properly engaged in prayer or ritual on a regular basis, and even my once-daily meditation practice has become "here and there, as I have time". There is something so powerful about structured practice, and I really don't know if I can explain why.
This might become a thread of other updates with regards to my spiritual practice, since I feel as though a lot has shifted in the last few months.
I have an idea for the most shocking #Halloween#costume: go as a #heatwave! (Written at 22°C in eastern France, normal would be 10°C). Old celebrations feel mistimed ...
Dad's 100th day of passing, memorial ceremonies were done this afternoon. Many of his fave food offerings were laid out for him & our ancestor grandparents. In front of indoor family altars.
Offerings & incense were also placed outside at temporary altar for Taoist lord of underground.
The start of #Obon, I've set out the #eggplant cows on the front stoop. They will carry our beloved ancestors to the living world to visit with us these next three days. To be honest, the Deer People will likely come by and eat the nasu.... XD But it is all symbolic so it is enough to set them out. The Deer People can feast on eggplants if they like. #rituals#dayofthedead
Secular #witches of mastodon, what #rituals do you do to create a positive mindset that is open to manifesting positive outcomes? Because I'm in a place right now that feels like I have some power over my life and I want to open up to it rather than the usual cutting myself down and feeling unworthy of good things. Because I truly believe that every little win on a personal scale can then be magnified globally. Now is the time. #SASSWitch#Ritual#ManifestPositivity#Hope
