🚧 From @slashdot:
⎧ CEO Huffman's complaint that the moderators were ignoring the wishes of Reddit's users led to a funny counter-response, according to the Verge. After asking users to vote on whether to end the protest, two forums saw overwhelming support instead for the only offered alternative: the subreddits "now only allow posts about comedian and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver." ⎭

John Oliver, that sexy man, is totally fine with people using his pictures in the Reddit protest:

While I disagree with u/spez's actions, I understand his perspective. Reddit's most valuable asset is its curated text data for training Large Language Models like ChatGPT. Closing down the API protects that asset. He's likely betting that subreddit moderation will be solved with LLMs so the mods that generated that data are of little concern going forward. There will be only one chance to monetize this data asset.

The reason I disagree with u/spez's actions is because I don't believe this asset belongs to him. I'm sure he's protected from a legal perspective but from a philosophical perspective, when a user writes an idea on an online forum, they don't forfeit ownership of that idea. People who contributed to Reddit even 12 months ago had no idea their thoughts will be monetized and consumed by LLMs. We need laws to protect people's data and to democratize data assets.

I also wish u/spez would just be honest about what he's doing. Telling possibly career ending lies about developers and disregarding the mods that made Reddit is inexcusable. It's clear that Reddit has succeeded despite u/spez's leadership.

dragontamer, to bestoflemmy in reddit be like that - Lemmy.world

Yes. But this is being hosted on the lemmy.ml server, which Beehaw.org remains federated with. And lemmy.world remains federated with lemmy.ml.

This means that lemmy.ml serves as our middle-man in this particular discussion. As long as we're on neutral grounds, we can talk and interact with Beehaw.org users. We're not as fully cut off as #RedditBlackout users think!

dragontamer, to bestoflemmy in YSK that kbin.social is now federating, adding hundreds of communities and ~26k more users content - Lemmy.world

I don’t know much about Lemmy and Federation, but is it a bit like the Newsgroups of old (Usenet), where you joined a Usenet service and any posts on any service propagated across all servers?

Yes and no.

Usenet's communities / groups (alt.whatever) were unified. While communities on Fediverse are not. This means that !technology is a different set of posts than !technology.

Like Usenet, the federation model means that individual servers can accept, or reject, other server's traffic. This means that posts aren't guaranteed to be global. (https://Lemmy.world and https://Beehaw.org are having a defederation spat right now, at least while moderation tools are being developed to fix the problems). This should be familiar to any old USENET user, though the younger group is extremely confused about federation.

I'm planning to self-host a Reddit like instance for myself, but I'm between Lemmy and kbin . Essentially I want to host my own data, and jump into discussions from other communities.

With a limited search results, people praise for , and bash developers about their world and political views, however Lemmy is written with , and Kbin with .

I just want to migrate to what people will be using to.

So, which solution would you prefer?

ShingoMouse,
@ShingoMouse@mastodon.social avatar

@arda At the moment, I'm not sure as I'm feeling very torn and upset over what has happened with #Reddit and the recent #Redditblackout. I still have a somewhat active account on there myself, mostly due to certain #Subreddits I follow of topics which interest me.

During Halloween a couple years back, I decided to dress my Reddit Avatar in a koala costume since I love koalas and was thinking about involving myself with some pro-koala activism groups due to their endangerment in Australia.

I love the use of quotes:

John Oliver 'looking sexy' (It is in the article itself.)

As if John Oliver could not possibly look sexy. So they have to quote it.

I'd understand the quotes if it was:

John Oliver 'looking like Dracula'

John Oliver 'looking like he just bench pressed 200 pounds'

John Oliver 'having his way with a hamster'

However, I do think John Oliver is quite capable of looking sexy!

Majority of #Reddit subs and their mods are cowards. Either going against majority votes or bootlicking a company for threatening to remove their asses while they aint even getting paid. just hella embaressing. Break things. fuck shit up. dont bow to greedy suits to keep your imaginary power cuz they will just take the next opportunity to remove u anyways just that you will have even less tools at your disposal.
Just a shame the alternatives mostly suck

Okey dokey. So, I'm looking at viable to replace what was providing for me* & I'm currently at the initial information overload stage.

My current understanding is that Lemmy is associated with tankies & best avoided, but it's also the most developed option presently.

Kbin seems to me to be more of an upcoming star, but still lacks important features & an app.

What have been others' informed experiences?
