In Search of Lost Time (book 1: Swann’s Way), by Marcel Proust.
You are thinking a lot about your (late 18th century) childhood, in an astounding amount of detail, where love of various kinds happens all around you, but to your recollection not satisfactorily for you, at least per your memories. @bookstodon#bookstodon#books#reading#france#madelaines
Oh no, Alice Munro has died, how sad. Make no mistake: she was one of the absolute best out there, just so clear and clean and PRECISE in writing about the flow of life. She basically redefined the whole short story/novella genre. Just shook it out and said nah, you don't need all that padding to tell a story, just don't forget what makes a character and their life real.
But for all the sadness: 92 years is a good run, and I'm so glad we had her. May she rest in peace.

@bookstodon Over on the @fictionable#blog Caroline Lucas argues that in the face of division, we must tell "compelling, inspiring stories about what we can and must achieve together".
@bookstodon And on the @fictionable#podcast Jenny Erpenbeck talks about why writers are so suspicious of documents, the trouble with endings and the problem of arbitrary borders.
