An Obsidian user on Medium recently lost an entire vault to data corruption because of an encryption plugin.

I’m very sorry this happened to them, and that they didn’t have a backup.

Truly, if our notes in Obsidian can’t function without features that exist only in that app, we’ve shackled ourselves to the wall of a prison without a door.

Always have an exit plan! Always backup your work! And never lock all your data with a key you don’t own.

This week: Using paper for finance tracking has been invaluable for helping me understand the process, shaping my Markdown budget trackers into a text-based, hands-on envelope budgeting approach. Simple calculations mean I can take charge of my incomings and outgoings without a standard spreadsheet.

@omnivore I love you! Just tried to visit the incredibly detailed #PlainText #GTD blog post at katanist.com, only to find it's vanished. Pwoof! Gone.

Did a search on my saved articles on Omnivore, and there it is!! Yay! I don't follow its principles exactly, but this is one post I've referred to many times over the past few years. Might #sketchnote it one day.

This is your friendly reminder to Save That Site you love, NOW.

Now that I've semi-perfected my plain text productivity system, I find myself (in)explicably drawn towards…

…Bullet journals. Who'd have thought?!

No, I will not be using stickers and shabby chic calligraphy and little pictures of kawaii animals. Although at this stage, nothing would surprise me.

@curtismchale was right: notebooks come and go, and the right tool for today's job might look different than the right tool for tomorrow's.

I've been screaming this for years. Service providers that provide authentication should do these two things at a minimum:

  1. Require at least 12 characters.
  2. Use ZXCVBN to estimate password strength and require a score of 4.

Interestingly enough, if you do those two things, you don't need stupid password complexity requirements, and you don't need a blacklist, as 12+ characters with a ZXCVBN score of 4 won't show up in password database breaches.

https://www.cc.gatech.edu/news/largest-study-its-kind-shows-outdated-password-practices-are-widespread

fuomag9,

@atoponce in has a 6char MAX alphanumeric only . Which is stored in since they’ll ask for characters of your password when calling them via phone. And of course there’s no for login

I’ve seen an announcement for improved security somewhere but it’s still like I’ve described at the time of writing 🤡
