@cory Hiss is good. Voices kicks ass.

Sidenote: I’ve been jamming to Better Lovers’ their singles lately. Have you heard it? It’s fun.

You can simply create an Apple Shortcut that opens a daily note in iA Writer. Double whammy when you also add your Daily Notes folder from Obsidian to iA Writer and point to it.

(There is a ‘get file’ iA Writer action for when you’re unsure what the path to your note is.)

Been using Slurp (an #Obsidian plugin) a few days now. For safe keeping info that can skip my Omnivore flow. (E.g. blood test results. Or recommendations for a holiday spot.)

It works well!

“Slurps webpages and saves them as clean, uncluttered Markdown. Think Pocket, but better.”

@nicole I lost control. Readwise (and Reader) was too good. My inbox was growing faster than I could (and wanted to) learn/process. Had to put limitations in place.

With Omnivore, I found the affordable way to keep a part of that PKM flow intact. I still use Snipd, but export the podcasts manually.

It’s all more intentional now.

Bypassing Omnivore with Slurp is for references that are not relevant for learning. (E.g. recommended restaurants at holiday spots.)

Anyone still around from two years ago when I occasionally posted about the start of my and its progress?

Update: I now have a (real) outline for my dissertation! I used the in to visualize it. Very useful (and a free alternative to !)

It feels a little unreal, but it seems like there's actually a book coming out of this. 🤯

Took some valuable advice on organizing the whole thing from these two books:

  1. The PhD Writing Handbook (very concise and straight to the point, great checklists) https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/phd-writing-handbook-9781137497703/
  2. Authoring a PhD (sometimes a bit paternalistic to me, but still very useful)
    https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-0-230-80208-7

Now I have to start structuring the chapters. I hope to have three chapters drafted by the end of the summer. And one chapter ready for publication in an edited volume by September ... wooo, this is exciting (and, of course, intimidating)!

@natalie @phdstudents @phdlife Woah that’s really cool! Good luck with everything.

I don’t know whether it works for you, yet I’ve heard good things about the Obsidian Longform plugin. :)

> #obsidian works with plain .md files
No, it doesn't. Not only those files aren't following any of the stardard markdown flavours, but also obsidian doesn't even have official export to markdown.
That means, the moment this proprietary tool gets enshittified you might lose all your internal links and attachments.
Don't believe it? try to move to other note taker and prove me wrong

No convoluted, crazy systems. Just the fundamentals and then some.

To me, it’s interesting how my past experiences often come help me in new endeavours.

While exploring music, I come across several German philosophers like Kant, Hegel, and even Nietzsche. And now, because I lived in Germany and got command over the language, I can read the original writings. Instead of relying on translations.

It often makes me wonder what I am missing out on by not knowing the language.

Do you have any examples of similar experiences? I’m curious.

As I’ve got some downtime away from work, I’m spending a bit of time overhauling my https://obsidian.md setup, and a couple of things come to mind.

  1. How long before they add AI as a feature? These vast PKBs (Personal Knowledge Bases) people have set up for themselves would lend well to asking an AI questions to retrieve information. Not sure how feasible it is given the horsepower needed to run AI locally and the privacy of people’s PKBs.

#Obsidian

geffrey,
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

@heliomass It’s unlikely that they’re going to add AI themselves. They’re very transparent about what they are building with. For example, with their public road map and guiding principles.

A lot of other people are actually experimenting with this with some really nice results. Haven’t had any need for it myself though. Check this: https://github.com/zatevakhin/obsidian-local-llm

The syncing is horrible with iCloud just because of iCloud. Been there and went back to Obsidian Sync.

geffrey,
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

@heliomass As for alternative apps, there is iA Writer, Drafts, Taio, Bear.

in some of these apps, you can actually open your vault. For example, I use iA Writer for everything on mobile.

geffrey,
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

@AnthonyBaker @heliomass Oh yea. It works flawlessly. And wikilinking works too! However, in iA writer it won’t show an autocomplete. As far as I know.

video/mp4

geffrey,
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

@Sirnesto @AnthonyBaker @heliomass You’ll have to open the Obsidian app to sync, yea.

Yet, I haven’t experienced any merge conflicts. 🧐 Which is strange now I think about it.

Why do you do PKM?

Content creators on the wider internet say: to improve productivity, learn new features/plugins/tools, leverage AI, get better at work.

But recently I had a nice chat with an all-female PKM creator group and our answers were: to improve mental and physical health, be more intentional, journal for clarity, prevent burnout.

Even I’M guilty of talking too much about the former and not too much about the latter.

#pkm

geffrey,
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

@nicole I PKM because I genuinely enjoy the process. It's exciting to piece together different ideas and uncovering new insights. I feel it isn't just about knowledge; it's about mastering a system that's fully under my control. That’s addictive, as well.

My approach isn't goal-driven, either. I'm focused on the ongoing experience. And trusting that the benefits will naturally follow.

@nicole I saw! Need to make a decision quick, haha.

geffrey, to Logseq
@geffrey@pkm.social avatar

I’m occasionally really intrigued by #Logseq for knowledge work. For #pkm.

But, moving from a free form like #obsidian to an outliner seems to me a bit of a hassle.

Do you use the both? Do you prefer one over the other?
