I'm mostly hugely empathetic towards the teams behind software I use, but I must admit I experience a small amount of schadenfreude because outages like these keep me employed AND keep my work interesting: https://www.theregister.com/2024/06/04/openai_chatgpt_outage/

I was watching some videos about k6.io, as my manager asked me to take ownership of the frontend slice.

I happened to find this play list https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJdv3RhAQXNHTlE2lL-CNLBXIINNGW3LO

It didn't take me long to realize where I saw @nicole already... and that's her great obsidian content haha.

@Metruzanca Haha, that's awesome! Love when worlds collide. I still work for Grafana Labs, who acquired k6 and me along with it! Still working on some k6 stuff and loving it.

Sometimes I look up from whatever weird subject I’m learning and marvel at the fact that I get to learn random things for work. Recently it’s been bathymetry and deep sea exploration, for a talk in Romania in two weeks where I relate them to distributed tracing for microservices-based systems. I love my job. https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/Bathymetry

@nicole I apologize if this is a question you've answered previously, but I have always wondered how you came to speak so many languages. It's really impressive & I was wondering if you would be open to tell me a little about it. Have a lovely day!

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@spinecracker No problem! Mostly just interest. I love talking to people and travelling, and languages help with both of those. I don’t speak everything fluently— my first five are the strongest— but I’ll still respond to comments in other languages even if I have to translate them! I just love when people’s eyes light up as I say something in their native tongue. That moment is the best.

So, I'm going to be speaking at Romanian Testing Conference on June 13th in Cluj-Napoca, Romania: https://romaniatesting.ro/sessions/cartography-of-the-deep-distributed-tracing-for-testing/

I had this cool (to me) idea of talking about distributed tracing in the context of deep sea exploration after reading Our Wives Under the Sea, but I actually know absolutely nothing about it. I have less than a month now and need to devour resources on bathymetry and the Mariana Trench-- and no, playing a triton monk named Mariana in tonight’s D&D one-shot doesn't count…

nicole, to DnD
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

Learning how to play monk for a one-shot this week. I usually play healers, so naturally I went Way of Mercy! I made this combat flowchart in Obsidian Excalidraw to help me get it straight in my head.

nicole,

@powersoffour I do use the keyboard shortcuts, yes. And I just start and add to it incrementally. It changes and grows quite a bit! I don't really plan out what it's going to look like because I'm diagramming as I go. Is it the planning out that's stopping you?

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@powersoffour Let me know if you have any questions! Sometimes it helps to have someone to ask stuff to. Also @zsviczian is here if you have any thornier questions.

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@undeuxtrois Yeah, it's a D&D 5e class! :) It came out in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, an official WotC book.

@powersoffour Absolutely not a derailment!

I've been shifting focus at work, from performance engineering to observability, and that means learning a whole lot. More learning in public! First up: . It's a databases for logs with some interesting design decisions that make it more performant than other logs databases. Here's a video I made with my colleague, Jay Clifford, to share what we've learned, including a demo app that ties in Loki, Grafana, and Alloy: https://youtu.be/1uk8LtQqsZQ

Another cheeky sign in London. This store sells rubber ducks and was fed up with the construction of the building it's part of.

@austingovella@pkm.social avatar

@nicole, why do you link the titles in your notes?

Like this: [[{{title}}]]

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@austingovella It's so that the heading changes if I change the filename of the note!

Sign in my hotel room in London. The door was stuck, and the maintenance crew helpfully "fixed" it by putting up a sign. Naturally I got transferred to a room with, you know, a door that actually opens and closes.

@EpiphanicSynchronicity That's what was so concerning! Reception was Not Impressed.

For visual notes to fit into your Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) system, you're going to need to be able to link them and embed them just like you would any other notes. Here's a video where I talk about how to link/embed to visuals, text within visual notes, and even parts of visuals with Obsidian Excalidraw by @zsviczian: https://youtu.be/lGh53N_Lj2Q

TIL how to enable the new Explore Logs app for . Turns out the latest versions of Loki and don't work with it yet, so you have to specify the right versions and change a few other things in the Docker Compose config. It's so cool that this is open source and not Cloud-only.

My notes here: https://notes.nicolevanderhoeven.com/How+to+enable+Explore+Logs+for+Loki

And here's a repo tying in a sample app + Alloy + Loki + Grafana in Docker: https://github.com/grafana/loki-fundamentals/tree/what-is-loki . Working on a video to explain it all!

Got #obsidian set up and synced using Obsidian Sync on my #linuxmint install. That's a big yay.

Now we'll start the #orgmode vs #obsidian tussle. May the better solution win.

Got to say that finding a good syncing solution for orgmode is critical. And github isn't it. Suggestions welcome.

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@h_d @birv2 I was coming here to suggest Syncthing too! That would be my pick.

Been using Slurp (an #Obsidian plugin) a few days now. For safe keeping info that can skip my Omnivore flow. (E.g. blood test results. Or recommendations for a holiday spot.)

It works well!

“Slurps webpages and saves them as clean, uncluttered Markdown. Think Pocket, but better.”

https://github.com/inhumantsar/slurp

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@geffrey I'm really wanting to suss out all the options on this space. Why would you want to bypass your Omnivore flow? And why not use Readwise?

Good advice on avoiding pointless meetings here. If I've ever given you a Reclaim link to book time on my calendar, you might have noticed that I block out two No-Meeting Days a week. Mondays are for video filming, and Thursdays are for coding or other engineering work. If I didn't do this, I would feel like I spend more time talking about what I want to do than actually doing it.

I just watched a video from CyanVoxel about his #obsidian setup and loved the theming of his vault so much that it got me down the rabbit hole of installing all the snippets and fonts. The screenshot is of a note where I applied the Manila background and gray pen!

@ivory I’m seeing a lot of missing profile pictures on Ivory iOS and MacOS. Doesn’t seem to be a particular server and they appear when I open them in a browser. Resetting cache sync in the settings did nothing. Or do I need to log out and in again?

nicole,
@nicole@pkm.social avatar

@apolaine @ivory +1 to this. I'm seeing the same thing, and only on Ivory for macOS and iOS. Opening an affected account's page in the browser or in another client displays the profile photo without any issues.
