Happy World Bicycle Day everyone!

(yes, it's a thing! 😆)

But we're dedicated to making Phoenix a friendlier, more welcoming place to ride a bike, every day 🚲💚🌵

This Sunday, June 2, is 602 day in .

It’s a clever(?) play on (one of) our area code(s)—602—and the mm-did date format—6/2.

Businesses around the valley are participating in various ways. Here’s the official list: https://www.investinphoenix.com/Documents/602-biz-list.pdf

I suggest something inside, as it might be 60.2° C outside. 🥵☀️🌵

HUNDREDS TO DIE IN PHOENIX FROM HEAT!

Summer Burns in PHOENIX. And Burns.

Scorching pavement blisters uncovered skin. Pus oozes from burned feet and bacteria-teeming wounds fester under sweat-soaked bandages for people living on the street.

This isn't a sci-fi future. It's today in an American city!

Oh this is awful to read. I kept on posting about #Phoenix here on #ClimateDiary last year and worrying about homeless people in particular, and to reassure that 645 really did die, and 290 of those were homeless- that is just awful!

My non-blindness physical disabilities are worsening and I have realized after an antenna incident over the weekend that I can no longer maintain my #AmateurRadio station all by myself. If anyone out here is a #HamRadio op in the West Valley of the #Phoenix area in #Arizona I'd really appreciate a DM if you're interested in helping. I'd really like to keep my station on the air. Thanks and 73.

Oh I just had to share. We are at the last of May in Phoenix and I know in just 2-3 weeks the heat wave may come so hot we can’t go swimming. But for now, even seeing the water rippling in the sunlight is a joy. #Phoenix #Water #Pool #Ripples

Backyard swimming pool just showing the water moving in ripples and small waves towards the camera. It’s all aqua tones with the sun bright and highlights from the moving water.

Placebo Records, 1985

Regionally focused comps were super helpful back before the internet. Best way to focus on a specific scene.

This one has a nice variety of musical styles. It's #3 in a series from Placebo spotlighting the Phoenix Scene (e.g. "This Is Phoenix, Not The Circle Jerks" and "Amuck").

There's a white paper insert with some Placebo Records and their respective prices listed. It's an order form you'd mail in.

When many people think of #Phoenix, they think of endless suburban sprawl. And, certainly, that’s part of the story. But here’s something that many are surprised to learn:

Four of the five largest city parks are located in metro Phoenix

"Searing #heatwaves could be a common theme this summer in parts of the United States and might make it one of the hottest on record, according to an updated outlook released Thursday by The Weather Company and Atmospheric G2.

The West Coast, from California to southwest Washington, might be the exception. "

"#Phoenix’s population is booming, making it the second-fastest growing U.S. city from 2021 to 2022. That’s also when heat deaths started to surge, after the U.S. Supreme Court ended a pandemic-era eviction moratorium, pushing more people onto the streets.

Now, heat is the second-biggest killer of #homeless people in the county, behind drug overdoses."

A cautionary tale and a warning for other cities' future heat disasters:

"What truly makes #Phoenix’s slow-motion heat disaster so deadly is the government’s struggle to protect vulnerable citizens.

People experiencing #homelessness made up 45% of the county’s heat-related deaths last year.

And none of the 156 people who died indoors last year had functioning air conditioning. In 85% of those cases, AC units were present but broken."

So, Weee! (https://www.sayweee.com/en) is an Asian grocery delivery service. (Probably not very carbon-friendly.) They deliver a lot of goods difficult, if not impossible to find in #Phoenix, but they also (apparently) listen.

I ordered Chashu from them a while back but, being frozen, large, and uncut it was problematic if you’re just making a single bowl of ramen.

However, stepping outside I found spittle on the sidewalk, and a lone, desultory cloud in the sky, weeping gently.

Better stay off the roads today. THIS is enough rain to cause #Phoenix drivers to run off the road.

Mom
At least someone's Mom. On Mothers' Day 2024 I found gardens of sculptures and decorations filling 3 home lots in central Phoenix, AZ. Earlier I shared an iPhone shot of a side yard and this is one of the sculptures I was able to see inside the side yard. By Don Russell, an extraordinary Outsider Artist who doesn't sell his work. He just buys more homes there to be able to work on them and store them while his renters enjoy the atmosphere.

Found object sculpture of a woman made from wire, metal, tools, washers, emblems, and decorative metal pieces, detail view of sculpture about 9 feet tall. She looks like she has wild long hair and an ornate gown of wire patterns with dark brown skin showing. Her eyes look startled, round and wide.

Truly a nice Mothers’ Day going for me since my youngest worked overnight till late enough I could go out with my cameras at 5:30 am. I enjoy driving around areas of Phoenix unknown to me and planning on finding subject matter that is a joy to see. Hit jackpot around 7 am in a seedy old neighborhood near old downtown. 3 homes with sculpture and outsider area that was terrific! Here’s a cellphone shot of one, so you can imagine my thrill when a renter let me in the side yard.

Nasty little secret about : They claim to have 700-800 miles of bike paths, and while I don’t doubt the number, I do doubt the value of them.

There are many, many demarcated bike lanes that go a couple blocks and then end.

I’ve started a little project to write up and highlight a number of the useful bike paths — the ones that can get you some distance reasonably easily.

Today’s ride (as was yesterday’s) was Maryland Ave.

LoneLocust,
@LoneLocust@mastodon.social avatar

The write-up on Maryland is coming soon, but it has a few surprises for me today.

I thought it was going to end at an undeveloped lot at 75th Ave, but that was just a bizarre little graveyard, it it continued on from there.

Palo Verde flowers on a bench - these trees on Phoenix are full of tiny yellow flowers. I was sitting on a light aqua-colored bench at the Banner hospital downtown as a tree was “snowing” flowers. Too bad I’m allergic to this pollen! It was a short break during a procedure my son is getting.
