Just got back from my first paddle of the year! Conditions were perfect for this end-of-day adventure-- minimal wind, no waves. And, I had the lake to myself! It was wonderful paddling slowly around the lake in complete solitude and silence.

Their alpacas are mostly rescues, and Yvonne taught us a lot about them. Would recommend!

Having not done a real hike since November, it seemed the perfect time to launch myself on ~40 miles over 3 days backpacking.

Day 1 started in old growth redwoods, passed remains of homesteading, then climbed past a selection of trees to one of the old growth redwood backpacking camps.

Western fairy slippers (Calypso bulbosa var. occidentalis). Two flowers of the orchid family stand facing the other direction at the foot of a conifer in forest duff. The flowers have purple petals sticking up like some sort of headdress. A rounded petal group sticks down, purple on the outside and striped red toward the top on the inside, big dots toward the bottom. Oh, and hairs. No leaves are visible below the flowers.
Starting up Baxter Trail at Baxter Environmental Camp. Big trees on either side of a road blocked with bollards and already shrinking due to only being legal as a trail now. More big tees behind.
Outhouse for scale! Arriving at Whiskey Flat Trail Camp. Trees almost as wide as the road passing between them rise well past the top of the portrait photograph. Tucked just behind one is an outhouse. More trees fill in the rest of the space.

Day 2 wasn't far, but had excursions to make it longer than the first. Out along Hanson Ridge and up to the fire lookout on Grasshopper Mountain and one that shall simply be known simply as The Excursion.

Yellow faced bumble bee (Bombus vosnesenskii) and silver bush lupine (Lupinus albifrons). Bright purple pea flowers on stalks with a bee drinking the nectar. The bee is fat and black and fuzzy with yellow head and shoulders and a big blob of orange pollen on the legs.
Western fence lizard on a rock. Rock on the left half with a lizard hanging onto the side, the head stretching out away from the rock. Behind on the right is a blur of wildflower in green and yellow and purple.
View from Grasshopper Mountain before the fog came in. Grassy prairie drops downward toward trees. A few stick out of the grass too. Lots of hills rolling away, green. Visible fire damage in the form of standing, black trunks.

Day 3 was the longest of them all, but also the most single track trail, the most old growth. Oh, yeah, and the most downhill. A little river and creek and lots of trees.

Bridge of wood and living root over calm water. A narrow bridge crosses a creek that is currently wide and flat below, with a gentle blue color. Trail is visible at either side. A tree grows at the edge of the water on the far side.
Tunnel through a stump. A fallen stump, hollow in the middle, has trail going through it. More trees are visible beyond, also quite wide.
Path through California/coastal redwoods. Huge trees rise from the sides. Shorter trees fill in some of the spaces below. Ferns fill in the rest of the space on the ground. A trail goes down the middle.

Enjoyed a fun spring hike yesterday in southern #NewHampshire. Went up an isolated rock mountain (a “monadnock” and so-named). No ice or snow, all the way to the summit. Great views from the top! @msokolov @jessamyn Agree to all. And for me, the shorter distance translates to this type of hike being a simple day trip, vs an overnight one if I do the same type of hike with the Whites.

@TimKStanton @jessamyn I think Tecumseh is the closest 4000er to b-town (I think?) but it is a bit underwhelming at the top. At least when I went up it was foggy, so might not be a great point of comparison
