TankerTrackers reporting a possible #OilSpill near #Malaysia: We've noticed a 60km long spill off the coast of Kuantan, Malaysia in today's satellite imagery. Based on the two imagery sources we've compared against (taken only 3 minutes apart), the spill may have reached shore 5 hours ago.

The two bright white spots on the right side are Emmy and Eva. this seems to indicate the spill is off one of the pipelines to the west of Eva. (Map of Emmy/Eva/pipelines here) https://m.ai6yr.org/@mappingsupport/112062922656458190

Not obvious on Sentinel-1 satellite from 2024-03-08 01:58:25 UTC, so the spill must be after that or closer to shore.

Hmm, not sure who is responding, but here's the nearest ship... Article says the spill near Emmy and Eva, need to go find those charts...

It should have been on the front pages, but due to global events, it has been overlooked.

A large oil spill near the #Caribbean island of Tobago, caused by an abandoned vessel on Feb 7, 2024, triggered a massive clean-up effort as the spill affected approximately 15 kilometers of Tobago's coastline, damaging a reef and potentially contaminating the island's fish and food supply.
The ecological impact is still unknown.

Study: chemical dispersants made BP oil spill worse. “..dispersants exert a more profound impact on the regulation of microbial communities than the oil spill itself…sunlight played a crucial role in intensifying dispersant toxicity.” @StirUni #oilspill

Seal Rocks buoy at the entrance to Prince William Sound is the only source of site-specific weather data for CG and oil laden tankers entering the Gulf of Alaska. It's been broken and won't be fixed until spring 2024. Good setup for another Exxon Valdez.

Alaska is facing a new oil spill threat, and the company behind it is notorious for its secrecy and environmental violations. The company, Hilcorp, owns a pipeline that runs under the Prince William Sound, the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster site. The old and corroded pipeline could leak millions of gallons of oil into the pristine waters.
