Woo, fixed it by using Device Manager to install newer "proprietary, tested" (ha!) drivers instead of the older "proprietary" drivers. I don't know why/how my system was in that state.
Nice to see > 120 fps on the FFXIV title screen instead of ~20.
For the True Linux Experience(TM), I had to run dpkg by hand after something got stuck during the driver switch-over.
I feel like I was literally just saying how I don't have any problems with my nVidia GPU on Kubuntu; this morning, FFXIV won't run on the GPU. I feel like I brought this on myself.
10 years from now when all the little annoyances in Linux regarding hardware video decoding, video drivers, applications, Wayland and x11 are sorted....
I can sit here and think, "I wasted hours for weeks each work evening trying to piece all of this together and make it work"
Bold of me to assume that it will all be sorted 10 years from now though 😂
(no, not looking for help. I'm happy with what I've managed!)
Garbage #NVIDIA card is out, shiny new #AMD card is in, the #GNOME workspace switching animation is so smooth IT ALONE would make me buy this GPU again, nightlight is there so I'll finally be able to sleep again at night, time for a shower because 30°C with rainy weather is NOT the kind of weather to be building PC's in. I'm so excited to finally experience Linux, the way it's meant to be played. :ablobhyperwubbel:
I do got a #Z600 a while back when it was still blazing fast for daily use yet already affordable, and that thing is very boring in comparison to #nvidia's custom design with that seperate board on the back and hardline compressor cooling...
The problem is that these will have use issues as retro systems and I bet you they'll become a major pain in the rear like the notoriously leaky Dual - G5 #MacPro's from #Apple with their liquid coolers.
