Wahtum Lake/PCT Backpacking: Day 1

Wahtum Lake holds a special place in my heart and I’m so happy to be back. It was my first backpacking trip two decades ago. It was my first successful trip when I started backpacking again last summer.

I started near sea level and i’m currently on 4,646 foot Chinidere Mountain. Already pitched my tent at the lake.

Mount Hood is beautiful from up here.

Blue sky with streaks of white clouds above the Cascade Mountain Range. Wahtum Lake is partly visible between the hills.
Twister Falls along the Eagle Creek Trail. Two waterfall streams fall at separate angles and cross each other.
Eagle Creek Trail leading up to Wahtum Lake. Trees along both sides of the forested trail.

Wahtum Lake/PCT Backpacking: Day 2

Currently heading up 4,892 foot Indian Mountain but not sure if i’ll make it due to snow. Then heading towards Lost Lake.

Here’s a couple more photos from yesterday and a couple of the trail this morning.

As promised, I slept on only the Z Lite last night. Hanging out on it before bed was nice. Sleeping, not so much. Woke up way more than usual.

Tunnel Falls along the Eagle Creek trail. Amazing tall waterfall with a tunnel behind it blasted in the rock. Moss covers the rocks around the waterfall.
Rocky section of the Pacific Crest Trail. Trail goes through rocks and tall green trees are behind.
Section of the Pacific Crest Trail covered in snow. Green trees line the trail.

On the slopes of Mount Gassan, colorful patches of snow are piquing the interest of Japan’s geoscientists. But what can these organisms tell us about climate change? https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2023/06/25/national/science-health/snow-algae-blooms-japan-mountains/?utm_content=buffer64e9d&utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=bffmstdn #news #japan #climatechange #yamagata #mountains #mountgassan #environment #ourplanet

Out of state co-worker: "I'm coming to Colorado in late June for a Bachelor party and we're all going to hike up a 14er!"

Me: "Heh! Got snowshoes?"

OOSC: "But it's summer!"

Me: "Not at 14k it's not!"

My first overnight trip into the Sierra Nevada mountains since the Pacemaker implant starts tomorrow. Just one night camping by a remote lake. Haven't packed yet but target base weight is 5kg, water and food taking the overall backpack weight to under 8kg🤞 Looking forward to a night in the mountains

Hohes Kreuzjoch (2950m), upper Valley, Ötztal Alps, ,

I have installed some loggers there.
Interesting: on the new summit cross, they write 2992m 🤔

Guten Morgen! Was war gestern schön was hat euch gefreut?

#nature #mountains #biodiversity #rock

Check out this bank of fog/clouds “trapped” on the left side of a mountain ridge! I saw this impressive phenomenon earlier this week while #hiking in the White #Mountains, #NewHampshire. The bank remained stationary on one side of the ridge all morning until early afternoon when it quickly disappeared. This “undercast” or “valley fog” is a common occurrence when there is a temperature inversion, but still interesting to see! #backpacking #nature #photography #landscape #LandscapePhotography
