So with my new found knowledge of upsetting me and causing me to leave it... The fact the only other engines that are not just proxying google or bing... Is or and while brave one is nice... I just cannot bring myself to use something that funds a biggot... Then mojeek just feels dated and not great...

I am tempted at bringing fuzzysearx back... and even look at trying to leverage the built in ability to add custom engines to look at leveraging other abilities... because searxng really seems like the only ethical way I can see to leverage search engines collecting data...

hack13,
@hack13@cyberfurz.social avatar

@Mojeek yeah... it just feels like I'm using AltaVista Search from the early 2000s. But I do love that you have your own index!

Mojeek,
@Mojeek@mastodon.social avatar

@hack13 well that's good to hear, we have done some UI stuff not that long ago, can check back in in the future. Anything in particular you would find better about the feel of us?

one of the things that I like about #mojeek search engine, is that you can filter the search results and ask the engine to never show any links from websites such as slant.co or other nonsense websites.

lxsameer,
@lxsameer@social.lxsameer.com avatar

@flamed @Mojeek no you can leave it empty

Mojeek,
@Mojeek@mastodon.social avatar

@lxsameer @flamed correct, you can just use exclusions if that's the kind of Focus you're looking to create. There's more info on https://www.mojeek.com/focus/ and in the accompanying blog: https://blog.mojeek.com/2022/08/mojeek-focus-search-the-web-you-want.html

The more I use #mojeek the better it gets.

I think with any search engine, there's a getting-to-know-you period when the visitor learns better how to maximize things.

The configurable handoff to other selectable engines is really nice.

I do Bing, Brave, Ecosia, Startpage, and Yandex for those.

so @Mojeek seems to have at least deleted their death wishes off of their site, but with no explanation, and no explanation on how they will make sure that this doesn't happen to other people who may be in a worse place than I am currently and can take serious damage from things like exactly this.

To just let an AI post stuff on your page is so irresponsible. To not make sure things like this doesn't happen is irresponsible.

If you let an AI post something in your name, YOU are responsible for what it confabulates.

Using ChatGPT to Double-Distill Mojeek Results into a Date-Based Topic Overview

My concern about AI-assisted search results has been, from the beginning, the lack of human context. A simple query is rarely going to be sufficient in itself; after all, the user is searching because of some existing information lack. Outside of the most basic queries (When is a movie playing? Where is that restaurant? How many ounces in a pound?)...

Sometimes when you #search the web you want to make sure your results are from some clever people.

That's why I made a #Mojeek Search Focus that will only return results from #university websites and #encyclopedia.

You can try it by going to the Mojeek Focus Dashboard and turning the feature on.

See here: https://mastodon.social/@Mojeek/112512007163410773

Mojeek,
@Mojeek@mastodon.social avatar

@matt think you had a request vis-a-vis Focus not that long ago, can you remind me what it was?

Also the &foc= means even without it switched on, a shared search using it will still work as expected i.e. look at https://www.mojeek.com/search?foc_t=Education&q=focus in a private window vs using your setup 😎

matt,
@matt@oslo.town avatar

@Mojeek I added it here, so it didn't get lost:
https://github.com/Mojeek/focus-templates/issues/14

Basically, even with the link you provided in the toot above, there is no way for me to see the Focus filter or that I am seeing filtered search results.

Focus is off as default, which means even the option in the main tab menu is non-existent.

Do you know what i mean?

Maybe "Focus" should always be in the nav bar, but if its disabled, take you to https://www.mojeek.com/focus/dashboard when you press it.

While #DuckDuckGo is down, I tried out a few other search engines. I did a search I made yesterday in each. #Bing gave me an interesting looking blog first, then some less-related info from high-trust sources, then an interesting paper, then a bunch of garbage. #Mojeek gave me nothing that looked interesting, just pages that used some of the words from my search. #Kagi gave me the less-related high-trust sources first, then the entire rest of the first page looked interesting.

timesandseasons,
@timesandseasons@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Mojeek I was searching "history of English in Estonia" after being curious why a film made in Estonia was in English. The search gave me a bunch of histories of Estonia, which would make sense if the search is keyword based but wasn't useful. Perhaps if I were to be a consistent Mojeek user, I'd become used to avoiding words like "history" that would bring up a bunch of uninteresting results.

Mojeek,
@Mojeek@mastodon.social avatar

@timesandseasons this is correct, and we are gradually adding in more semantic matching, but this is a fine line as detailed in our February update post here: https://blog.mojeek.com/2024/02/major-algorithm-update.html

Thanks a lot for sharing this example, it has been logged.

Wow, THIS is an eye-opener. A visual representation of what Search API powers what other Search engine. I'd no idea Bing had become so prevalent. I didn't even realise my own choice of engine, Startpage, had abandoned Google for it!

NB: This actually lists SP as still using Google but Seirdy's list doing the rounds elsewhere correctly states it as having moved.

Hmm I probably have the most ridiculous #robotstxt for a #Misskey instance right now lol. I just want to let #Mojeek and #Marginalia crawl #Makai and make sure to keep out #Google and the AI scrapers... :satrithink:

If there are other user-agents of independent #searchengines I should allow in https://makai.chaotic.ninja/robots.txt, please let me know! I'm actually searching #SauceNAO, #TinEye, and #IQDB's #useragent so I can let them fetch our media for their reverse image search.
