One of the best things about Mastodon has been discovering and connecting with new communities by following hashtags. Most of the people I follow are people I’ve met through different tech communities (mostly iOS). Following hashtags like #lakelife#woodworking#DIY#wine and #breadposting has connected me to many people with similar interests that I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths with otherwise. And it’s brought welcome low-tech offline content into my feed.
So, came out to the lake after being away for a week and found this squatter sleeping in my living room.
Not sure how to deal with a bat. I'd hate to toss him out in the cold... its only about 2 C.
With work being so busy, I haven’t had the time to post here often. But I figured to take a break and post a photo of the recent snow we’ve had out here in Michigan.
A fishing shelter has broken through the ice today on our lake in NW #Minnesota. Rain and warm temps have made lake ice dangerous. Typically, this time of year, it should be 24 to 30 inches thick.
We escaped the foot of snow they got further west. The northwest wind is howling today and pulling the heat out of the lake. Fall becomes winter so quickly in NW Minnesota. #lakelife
The old boat wouldn't start. I'm attempting the 2 miles to the access by trolling motor. Ironic, since trolling motor power was how i got it into dock last spring when it ran out of gas.
I hope the batteries have a full charge.
I just had a amazing experience. A cloud of #blackbirds occupied all the trees in our yard. They kept flying into our trees for more than 25 minutes. There must have been a half million of them. Suddenly all at once they took flight. The sound of it surprised me, it was literally a roar and you could feel the wind. I've never been in the exact middle of anything like this before. #Minnesota always finds ways to surprise me.
I tried to capture a bit of it for you.
We have been bothered by a wasp nest that I had been tolerating on the agreement that "you don't bother me, I won't bother you." But now as we move into late summer they've become aggressive, swarming meals and getting into the house. But they were too high for me to reach with spray.
So this is what a wasps nest looks like after you shoot it with a 12 ga shotgun and it drops 30 feet to the ground. I'm a little disappointed, I thought for sure it would evaporate.
This blue heron just flew in. It fishes regularly from our shore. It likes to land on the dock, then walks across the beach to fish in the swimming shallows. Not sure why it doesn't just land in the lake, but it prefers the dock.
