Where I speak some advantages Signal has over the bigger richer rest of tech:
“We don’t have to be full of shit. We’re not a surveillance company. I’m not trying to pretend Facebook is good. I don’t have to toe a party line that is divorced from reality”
@ailyaut That looks very cool and I like the idea for the name and the logo! But yeah, actually making this is another story all together.
There are however two recent projects that have similar goals:
Moxxy https://moxxy.org/ (currently Android only, but it uses Flutter which is cross-platform), and Prose https://prose.org/ (not yet released, but should come later this year). #xmpp#jabber#moxxy#prose
I guess it's an #UnpopularOpinion but here goes: Maybe it would be better if #Mastodon simply removes the DM/Private Mentions "feature" altogether. In its current form it's effectively kinda useless. It's insecure, it doesn't feel well integrated, it feels like bolted on but not as a natural part of the experience.
@jwildeboer
Or better integrates click-through links to #Jabber or #Matrix, with for example plugins for integrated Jabber overlay chats. They exist and could be quite easily integrated as a plug-in. @glynmoody
Anyone know of a #FOSS#android app ala #pidgin that supports multiple chat protocols? Mainly looking for #XMPP and #Matrix with E2EE and room/group chat support... other protocols are a bonus.
Maybe I would just use a #Jabber app, such as #Conversations by @daniel or one of its forks — and a private #XMPP server with #Slidge by @nicoco as bridge to Matrix and many other protocols:
Що першим ділом треба зробити з новим телефоном? Правильно, видалити або заблокувати купу передвстановленого туди лайна, після чого підключити #fdroid і поставити що треба.
Ще трошки доведеться тягнути з play, але не будемо про сумне.
Взагалі все це сумно, бо думати про новий телефон я починаю лише тоді, коли старий розвалюється в руках. І це завжди вольовий вибір між просрати гроші на це чи потерпіти ще кілька місяців-півроку-рік і потратити на щось корисніше.
You are right, that setting up a modern #XMPP server has some "funny" aspects: You need the right DNS entries, you want to have an HTTP server, and there is #TURN for #Jingle.
But I didn't understand the post by @frankie in the way, they were promoting selfhosting.
For most "non-geek" people I suggest (for #Jabber as for email or fediverse/Mastodon) to select a trustworthy server. E.g. a local internet club, a cooperative or a small company. There are many free and paid options.
I totally agree, that #Jabber is not always a smooth experience. It highly depends on selection of server, which client is in use, how is the network etc. I even wonder, if positions of stars and planets might play a role 🙂
But what would be the alternative? Either we invest our time, energy, and money into free and federated technology, such as #XMPP, or we give up on our #digitalSovereignty.
