Where I speak some advantages Signal has over the bigger richer rest of tech:

“We don’t have to be full of shit. We’re not a surveillance company. I’m not trying to pretend Facebook is good. I don’t have to toe a party line that is divorced from reality”

Same with #Gajim [#Desktop] and #monoclesChat [#Android] and many other options.

Also if you can recommend any other good #XMPP / #Jabber Servers feel free to namedrop them as I do work on an index for those - among others:

Hi!
For the past few weeks, I worked on a new project: !
1999 aims to be an XMPP client that is:

  1. and
  2. cross-platform (mobile and desktop)
  3. modern looking, with a uniform look across platforms
  4. user-friendly
  5. secure

The goal is to have an xmpp client that has the same name, ui and features on every platform, which I believe is what xmpp lacks right now.

I am not a programmer so this is only a UI at the moment!

More info: https://1999.robotfumeur.fr/

kris,
@kris@outmo.de avatar

@ailyaut That looks very cool and I like the idea for the name and the logo! But yeah, actually making this is another story all together.

There are however two recent projects that have similar goals:
Moxxy https://moxxy.org/ (currently Android only, but it uses Flutter which is cross-platform), and Prose https://prose.org/ (not yet released, but should come later this year). #xmpp #jabber #moxxy #prose

I like #Matrix and use it a lot, but it pays to know its limitations:

That said, I have an extremely limited understanding of the details this blog post describes.

P.S. Still hoping for an #XMPP renaissance.

When I started to use #Jabber, maybe 2014, it already had those features.

Oh, great, Jabber clients seem to support all the "modern" extensions now.
I would've needed this ten years ago.

Anyway, I installed Gajim and created a new account, in case any of my contacts might ever want to use it. :blobcatgooglyshrug:

I guess it's an #UnpopularOpinion but here goes: Maybe it would be better if #Mastodon simply removes the DM/Private Mentions "feature" altogether. In its current form it's effectively kinda useless. It's insecure, it doesn't feel well integrated, it feels like bolted on but not as a natural part of the experience.

stevenroose,

@jwildeboer
Or better integrates click-through links to #Jabber or #Matrix, with for example plugins for integrated Jabber overlay chats. They exist and could be quite easily integrated as a plug-in.

kln, to foss

Anyone know of a #FOSS #android app ala #pidgin that supports multiple chat protocols? Mainly looking for #XMPP and #Matrix with E2EE and room/group chat support... other protocols are a bonus.

(Not asking for much am I... :blobnerd: )

debacle,
@debacle@framapiaf.org avatar

@kln

Maybe I would just use a #Jabber app, such as #Conversations by @daniel or one of its forks — and a private #XMPP server with #Slidge by @nicoco as bridge to Matrix and many other protocols:

https://git.sr.ht/~nicoco/slidge

But probably it does not support #E2EE...

We just released our first beta featuring audio calls between #Monal and other clients (most notably #Conversations).

As always test it and let us know if something doesn't work as expected :)

    You are right, that setting up a modern server has some "funny" aspects: You need the right DNS entries, you want to have an HTTP server, and there is for .

    But I didn't understand the post by @frankie in the way, they were promoting selfhosting.

    For most "non-geek" people I suggest (for as for email or fediverse/Mastodon) to select a trustworthy server. E.g. a local internet club, a cooperative or a small company. There are many free and paid options.

    @nanoelquant @frankie

    I totally agree, that is not always a smooth experience. It highly depends on selection of server, which client is in use, how is the network etc. I even wonder, if positions of stars and planets might play a role 🙂

    But what would be the alternative? Either we invest our time, energy, and money into free and federated technology, such as , or we give up on our .
