Most of these tests to ensure someone is a #millennial seem like things that anyone can figure out, but I don't see any possible way for kids these days to understand the #iPod scroll wheel #interface without seeing someone else use it first.
@mikemccaffrey I recall my dad figuring out the whole thing at the time when he picked up my iPod. I figured it must have been good design if he didn't need specific instructions
There are only two things I’d change about this 4G;
Make the USB charging actually work.
Have the backlight be dimmable.
With those two things fixed it’d be the perfect music player for me.
The screen is fine in daylight, but try using it at night and it’s like staring directly into the sun. It is possible by installing RockBox, but I don’t like RB at all. I’d far rather run the OG firmware. #iPod
I know people legitimately shit on Apple for their business practices and making relatively new devices if not obsolete then not a million miles away...
But the fact I can plug a 20 year old #iPod into my Mac to repair a corrupted SD card is pretty bloody cool actually.
Got a 7th gen #iPod Classic here that flat refuses to work. I’ve also got a 5G Classic that works (albeit on the OG HDD) and given that they take the same HDD, in theory I should be able to swap them across.
The 5G’s working drive does not work in the 7G. At all. I’ve tried swapping the ribbon cable too, but no dice.
There doesn’t appear to be anything physically wrong with the 7G at all, so I’m not sure what’s happened.
Managed to finally get the 5G into disk mode and figured out that the HDD in it was the shagged one. It wouldn’t mount to either macOS or my Windows install. So swapped it out for the other one which is recognised by both.
But it won’t format.
So I guess that 20 year old HDD is now toast.
Bugger.

*Because I know you’re all DYING to know how it’s going
I wanted an electronics project and also wanted a dedicated music player so I'm solving both with the same purchase.
@killyourfm convinced me so I picked up this old iPod video/classic on eBay. I'm giving it a bit of a charge then I'm going to see what all needs replacing. Hopefully it's functional just rough because I'd like to use it as I go. #iPod#iPodClassic#music#RetroTech
Went all black with the case. New screen and battery and a 64GB CF card for storage. Dumped my #Bandcamp collection as FLACs on there to run through #Rockbox
Found this cheap at resale. It didn't come with the cable. Being a man of a certain age, I have a milk crate full of old cables. And, well, that came in handy. So, wives. Scoff. Scoff all you want!
Hardest #iPod repair until now: click wheel connection restored, dead hard drive replaced and boot loop fixed by restoring with iPod Updater (iTunes can’t connect to download firmwares anymore).

Doesn't help that I got a flat tire on Friday and after going to two shops both of which claiming they would plug and patch it for around $40 instead bamboozled and bait and switched me into four "new" tires for about $600.
