I also believe there's maybe one risk with #universities being in charge of the #moderation aspects of running a server: what if some of its employees are not being aligned with its #publicRelation stance on either a policy issue or an internal affair (e.g. #harassment)?
I suggest that the infrastructure and costs of such #academic-related servers could be taken charge of by #university but that moderation should be done by some external group - eg a learned society

My favorite is when people tell us to "just block them" as if that solves the underlying problem with moderation being a human problem and not simply one you can solve with tools. 🙄
Just blocking doesn't prevent them creating multiple accounts.
Just blocking doesn't stop targeted harassment.
Just blocking doesnt prevent threats.
Just blocking doesn't stop them from harming us.
Just blocking doesn't keep them from unaliving us.
Instead of saying "just block" why don't you talk to the men in your circles about doing better, being better.
Your silence is complicity. And you have done it, and still do it.
Lisa Graves talks to Nicole Sandler on the Supreme Court's opinion on the Counterman V Colorado case. "American people need to have 21st century rules to deal with 21st century cyberstalking, stalking, harassment and that type of threat. This is not about core 1st Amendment rights. People don't have the right to harass other people and threaten them." #SupremeCourt#1stAmendment#stalking#CyberStalking#harassment#OnlineThreats#Facebook#Counterman

When people tell me about how bad the fediverse is, but don't elaborate on the why, I think that they are simply uncomfortable with the consequences part of the program.
Simple truth is, some people are going to be Dicks. No matter what you do.
So hard moderation choices have to be made.
Even when you don't want to make them.
This model is currently the best moderation tool we have.
It does suck... but it's better than centralization.
I am conflicted by @mozilla content policies announcement. I appreciate that a lot of thought went into it, but I think they could be used to eliminate a lot of necessary social tension.
An example is their violent content policy: “Users may not share content that depicts abuse of humans or animals, or that includes excessively gory or violent imagery that…can disturb other users.“
I am a lifelong #vegetarian and I’ve been #vegan for 20 years. Photos of meat/dead animals disturb me. Am I to assume then that sharing this content will be banned in that instance? And if not, why not?
Also, nothing on who will be #moderating content. Is it volunteers, #Mozilla staff, external contractors??
The harassment section is also... confusing. Electeds are very much a "political class". If I "diminish" or "shame" an elected official for their stance or vote or position, how is it not harassment and subject to removal based on these policies? Same for members of political parties for that matter.
I think one reason #women in our #military are experiencing more #sexual#harassment is the #Republican party's vile disgorging of demonstrably not medical, nearly Puritanical legislation originating from billionaire hedonists who don't believe a damn thing they're shoving down everyone's throats, but have the money to make politicians grovel before them & do their will, or else.
Moms for Liberty Has Aggressive, Predatory Tactics—and They’re Working
Moms for Liberty has targeted teachers, administrators, parents, and school board members, orchestrating harassment campaigns that have left people fearing for their safety—and in some cases, their lives.
“I reached a breaking point where the #harassment was so bad that I called a crisis line. I thought I could just walk in front of a car and I wouldn’t have to go to work tomorrow,” Grossberg said.
“She was subject to one of the most vile, toxic work environments I’ve seen in my 30 years of practice,” Grossberg’s atty told MSNBC….
Elizabeth Warren is raising concerns to Tesla Board Chairman Robyn Denholm that its Board of Directors failed to meet its legal responsibility to protect Tesla and uphold its fiduciary duty to shareholders from Elon Musk's actions after he bought Twitter.
#Tesla was sued Wednesday by a California state agency that says the #ElonMusk-led carmaker is stonewalling an investigation into alleged #discrimination and #harassment.
Re-posting this 🐤 thread from 2018 which, sadly, is still relevant:
#WomenInSTEM who talk about #harassment and sexual misconduct get a lot of antagonistic & unhelpful replies. @shrewshrew and I (a woman & a man in science) tried to categorize them. #9ReplyGuys
If you want to be an #inclusive and #diverse platform, you need to take the feedback of people when they give it to you, and make actual changes.
This platform is difficult to navigate for blind and disabled people. We need better accessibility & design to include them. (I asked.)
This platform also lacks a good way to block/report instances & individuals across the fediverse in any meaningful way, because they show up on other instances.
As discussed before the "fediblocked" feature is fedifucked. It gives a clear hashtag for the trolls, creeps, stalkers, Nazis and racists to find and harass the reporter.
I know each individual instance has public block lists, but there are entire servers full of the most disgusting filth (as with any platform).
Additionally, I'd like to point out that Black, Brown & Indigenous creators on the birdsite and here have expressed concerns about racism, harassment, and their lived experience and then tone policed for not using a CW.
So let's have these hard conversations as members of the Cauliflower Coalition who absolutely dislike feeling uncomfortable.
Sit with your discomfort and imagine a world where your ability to "ignore" or "mute" isn't possible because of how you look, how people perceive you, or because you're disabled (even the invisible ones).
