The French refusal of loanwords is particularly annoying when it comes to tech: “Internet” is about the only one they seem to have grudgingly accepted. I mean, why say digital camera when you could say “appareil photo numérique” and why say laptop when you could say “ordinateur portable”
Chances are most of you know about some big names in #OpenSource and #Privacy, but there’s one FOSS champion you might not know: @Framasoft
They offer a bunch of services that are all open source, free to use, collect no data whatsoever, and that can help you replace some of big tech’s services. And a lot of them don’t even require an account!
So, let’s look at who they are, what they do, and the services you can use from them!
@thelinuxEXP@Framasoft In this world, I need something like this, but some of them are not good for me, because I can't read #french words (unfortunately). 😭
#french public #schools have a huge problem with absent #teachers
So much they some parents are suing the government for failure to deliver aufficient public service #onveutdesprofs = we want teachers
What a shame #france#education
I am dining at a bistro outside the Lyon city centre, and never before have I so keenly felt the weight of this marvellous opening line by PG Wodehouse:
“Into the face of the young man who sat on the terrace of the Hotel Magnifique at Cannes there had crept a look of furtive shame, the shifty, hangdog look which announces that an Englishman is about to talk French.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed he will have talks with #French President Emmanuel #Macron
" #Paris - With each visit, Ukraine's defense and offensive capabilities are expanding. The ties with Europe are getting stronger, and the pressure on russia is growing. I will have a meeting with my friend Emanuel and we will talk through the most important points of bilateral relations" - #Zelensky said on Twitter
Start with the tech stuff. I'm a #programmer. Mostly writing web apps using #ReactJS and #NodeJS with some #mongodb. Been dabbling with #mui for a recent project too.
I've been messing computer since a child and have fond memories of being asked to spend £1000 of my dad's friends money to build him a computer. The look on his face when he walked into his dining room to see bits of computer scattered all over the table and me, age 9, ready to put it together. Not going to say my age now, but it was a 486DX2-66 with a whole 8MB of memory.
Outside of tech, I'm outdoorsy. I like a good #hike, or #walk in the woods. I love nature and campaign to protect the #climate and #biodiversity.
I #cycle lots of places but just to save on petrol and parking. My #bike was free and I don't own lycra.
I have an #allotment where I grow a lot of my own food. I eat a mostly #vegetarian diet, so that keeps the food bill lower.
Learning #guitar and #French... Sometimes at the same time!
#French parliament designates wagner a ‘terrorist group’
All lawmakers present in parliament — 331 in total — voted in favor of the resolution, which is non-binding. The resolution calls on the European Union to register wagner on the #EU list of terrorist groups.
Arman Soldin 32, of Agence France-Presse died when his team came under Grad fire while with a detachment of Ukrainian soldiers. He was killed when a rocket struck close to where he was taking cover. The rest of the members of the AFP team were uninjured
RIP
According to Reporters Without Borders, Soldin is the eleventh journalist, fixer or driver to have been killed by russian forces
#OTD in 1942 Vichy #French forces of Diego Suarez (now Antsiranana) surrendered to the #British invaders.
The forts of the Joffre Line, covering the approach to Diego Suarez were still manned, but were not a priority. The powerful shore batteries protecting the entrance to the harbour were a significant problem, though, and plans were put in place to deal with them.
#OTD in 1942, #British forces launched Operation Ironclad, landing on the Vichy #French island of #Madagascar, beginning a six-month long campaign to take the island.
It was the first major amphibious operation conducted by the Allies, and they learned some useful lessons from the experience.
Hello, my name's Greg & I'm a stamp collector. My collection has been much neglected of late & I have hundreds of stamps to sort & put in #Davo albums & the like. I collect #NewZealand & #French stamps & have #cricket 🏏 & #HarryPotter⚡ thematic collections, along with the beginnings of a #starwars one. I regret the snail mail these days & detest self-adhesive stamps. I used to bid on & buy on eBay; obviously a no-go zone for me these days. Still, plenty to be getting on with. #stampcollecting
Did you know that "Little Red Riding Hood" originally just...died?
Charles Perrault wrote one of the oldest versions of the tale in 1697 & here both the #grandmother & the #girl get eaten by the #wolf - no happy ending.
This version is also rather #sexual & is meant to be a moral tale for young girls not to be naïve.
The #French version also mentions that she wears a "chaperon", not a mere hood. A chaperon is a short cape with a hood attached.
All this talk of how Mastodon missed being the next big thing, and I'm really starting to wonder if I care. You don't want to be so small it collapses, and big enough to have lots of great folks, but being the "it" thing just seems to bring all the assholes. I remember being super excited when my birdsite account went past 10k followers, but frankly it only got worse the bigger it got. 🤷♀️
@noondlyt
I can see your point, but I tend to have a more optimistic view.
As the #French Revolution blew away the oligarchs of old (#aristocrats), I think the pendulum of history has reached its maximum amplitude: wealth concentration in the hands of #billionaires, #trusts, and #multinationals is about to reach its climax.
If the momentum of the #Fediverse could be kept, #society just might reach...

...political alliances. Languages and cultures, and thus racism, did not play the prominent role it played in the #US. E.g. "At the time of the 1789 #French Revolution, only half of the French people spoke some French, and 12–13% spoke the version of it that was to be found in literature and in educational facilities, according to Hobsbawm.
There’s a shocking parallel between today’s Republican anti-abortion movement and the witch hunts of the 17th century. It has to do with both economics and political competition and is all about men achieving power on the backs of women.
Of course the pompous #GreatReplacementTheory (#GRT), though the term was coined by French conspiracy novelist, #RenaudCamus, in his 2011 novel "Le Grand #Remplacement", dates back to the works of two other #French intellectuals from the 19th century,..
Chehel Sotoun is among the 9 Iranian Gardens which are collectively registered as one of Iran's 23 registered #world#heritage Sites under the name of the Persian #Garden.
Random linguistic fact: The letter W was used in 19th century French so rarely that Louis Braille, the genius inventor of the Braille code for the blind, put it to the 40th place in his table of Braille characters. So, basically, his code for French goes: U, V, X, Y, Z, then all the letters with diacritics (which are quite numerous in French), and then W. #Languages#French#Braille
