#Framework's expansion cards give so much flexibility, sometimes in unexpected ways:

I worked in a family member's office this weekend. Their laptop has the HDMI port on the right side, so the monitor cable sits on the right ready to be plugged in. On my @frameworkcomputer laptop I happen to have the HDMI port on the left.

Instead of trying to snake the stiff short HDMI cable to the left side, I swapped the expansion cards so the HDMI was on the right and plugged in without a fight.

Well, I tried Wayland.

Two hard crash, full lock ups, one with graphic corruption and one with a flash of black from the display before it came back locked.

Going back to X11 for another year or two

More scuttlebutt about @purism laptops being poorly made. The author suggests is a better choice for buying a new laptop;

https://anarc.at/blog/2022-08-25-one-dead-purism-laptop/

For the more cash-strapped among us, I suggest a used Windows laptop. These days you can get one for NZ$50-$100, and it's rare to find one that can't run . Even if you have to use a distro compromised with binary blobs, to get all the hardware working.

At that price, they're cheap to replace, and you can have spares.

Oh, by the way, since the optimisations I made on the bundle size, it now takes ~3.61 seconds to download and install Kitten¹ on my machine and ~1 second to update it (the initial install takes longer as Kitten downloads its own Node.js runtime and that takes the bulk of the time).

Every second you don’t spend waiting for something is a second you can spend doing something else 🤓

(And remember, Kitten is a server. So you don’t have to download and install a framework every time you start a project – no npx this or that or anything. Just start writing your code and run kitten.)

So I pre-ordered the Framework 16 laptop back in September 2023.
I ended up in batch 12, which I believe is the last batch assigned to Q1.

Now, it's almost March and as they're currently busy shipping out batch 3 I was wondering: are they really going to get 9 more batches out in 1 more month?

So I asked them, and the start of their response was "we can't give specific order dates, etc etc" the response did end with this sentence:

"Rest assured that we are still within the time frame for Q1 (January-March)"

So I have hope, 5 more weeks!

Is there any good use for old and ancient iPads?

I inherited a couple devices. The laptop was so thoroughly hacked I gave up - HP locked down the bios making it pretty hard to install #Ubuntu and UNETbootin wasn't working because the hacked device was blocked from downloading an ISO given my limited skills. Plus I didn't want to spend hours working trying to rescue a 10 year old hacked laptop.

@rvaughnmd I refuse to buy any new Apple desktops or laptops until they stop making it impossible to upgrade them and extend their lifespans.

My next laptop will be from #Framework.
My next smartphone will likely be a #FairPhone.
My next tablet will probably still be an iPad Pro because they really are that good. Nothing comes even remotely close. I do want to pick up a #StarLite to play around with, though.

If you want #fingerprint support with #LightDM you can uninstall lightdm-gtk-greeter and instead install slick-greeter which is an alternate front end to LightDM. You can get GUI settings with lightdm-settings, but the settings file is super simple to use.

As long as sudo uses your fingerprint, this will too.

OK think I'm done setting up configs and git repo's. I'm sure I've forgotten something.

Currently finishing downloading games then I need to go through and move backups of save data.

So, I think I'm going to get a #Fairphone 5. I heard the Camera is not amazing but it's got to be better than my ancient Samsung Xcover 5.

The main thing that sold me is that the USB port is replaceable. This is what always breaks on my phones.

Unfortunately, it's not as water-proof as an Xcover phone but the whole Xcover line seems pointless now since the phones don't last long and they're not really upgrading the hardware between generations.

I feel good about buying something that at least pretends to be #sustainable and has better labor practices, even if it disappoints, I think this is still a step in the right direction.

Having something that's repairable is a huge plus though, for sure. I'm not going to regret that part.

What's your experience with #Fairphone? I think the main downside (so far) is that the hardware is only repairable and not upgradable like in the #Framework laptop. That's the next step.

@balterwenjamin42 …and #framework, and (what the hell, i don't play non-ascii games anymore anyway) #pine64.

however, have you seen the prices from those 3 first ones mentioned? it's going to be pinebook or (more probable yet) a discarded/used but still good laptop i find on #kijiji for 100$ and stuff it with memory and ssd's if possible.

So, I'm just messing around, trying to learn Rust. I'm used to making web apps in PHP, or occasionally Javascript or Python. I'm trying out Rust with the Axum framework. I'm finding it to be a lot less ergonomic than doing the same type of stuff in PHP.

Is that just how it is? Like, I shouldn't be comparing it to PHP, I should only compare it to C++ or Java? I have no doubt that it's more ergonomic than those.

huan,

@MegaMichelle Any reason why you didn't choose Go? IMO, Go reconciles two worlds: simplicity and performance.

There are also very nice frameworks for Go like: Gin or Go Fiber. There's even Goravel that imitates Laravel: https://github.com/goravel/goravel

My Framework laptop had a wonky key, so I contacted support. Within a week I had a free replacement input cover (top of the case with a new keyboard and trackpad).
Even cooler: my five-year-old disassembled and reassembed the laptop completely by himself to replace the part. The only part I did for him was working with the cable connection. While it was open we discussed all the components and how they connect to each other. What a fantastic experience!
