Day 5

Since online became a broader concern, companies now attempt to appear privacy-oriented while just changing the way they spy on their users.

Such is the case with disabling third-party cookies in and developing technologies such as or , both of which we've opposed from the very beginning.

Yes, our browser is based on , but we do a lot of modifications to the code and take special measures to always protect our users and their privacy.

Bluetooth devices like AirTags and Tile Tags can help with the stress or losing your keys or luggage. They work by enrolling a massive number of phones into a network that monitors and reports back the locations of these tags.

This , we're looking at privacy-washing:
https://proton.me/blog/privacy-washing-2023

Big tech companies like Microsoft use as a sales strategy for three main reasons:

💪 More people demand privacy
🔖 Stronger privacy regulations
💰 Ad-blockers hurt ad revenues

Much of the web is supported by advertising, too often at the expense of and at the risk of causing or contributing to serious harms like discrimination, manipulation, and more.

Privacy-washing is like fast-fashion's greenwashing: deceptive.

Big tech giants like Microsoft, Apple, and Google are increasingly trying to appear as if they are defending your privacy.

But their actions tell a different story:

In light of this, switching to a -friendly search engine is a quick and easy way to help you keep your online experience private. 🔒

All sorts of companies collect a host of data that can reveal sensitive info about a person’s health and health care choices. Search queries, browsing history, the contents of communications, and a person’s location data can all reveal incredibly private info.

Day 3

Not only should you get a that offers anti-tracking protection (or a tracker blocker extension), but one that cares about you and doesn’t spy on your browsing habits. In the end, blocking trackers is almost pointless if you are using a browser that collects far more details than any tracking ad ever could.

At Vivaldi we believe what you do online is your business. We don't profile you, nor share or sell information to any third party.

Incognito Mode does not protect your identity at all while you browse the internet

All that it does is stop your browsing history from being logged locally. It does not hide your IP address.

Google, your ISP, and the websites you visit can still track you.

This , keeping at the forefront of discussion about regulation is important. It ensures that personal data is protected from exploitation and helps users maintain autonomy over their private information.

Our first recommendation for someone who wants to be better protected online is easy: switch to a #privacy-friendly #browser!

Using Vivaldi? We take your privacy seriously:

  1. Our built-in Tracker and #AdBlocker lets you block invasive trackers, the biggest sources of #surveillance out there. You can set different blocking levels for different websites.

  2. Cookie dialogs can be confusing. Enable the option ‘Remove cookie warnings’, to avoid the risk of unwillingly giving sites permission to create behavioral profiles about you.

  3. Search Suggestions are disabled by default, so that your search engine doesn’t see what you type on your address and search field.

Go to Settings > Privacy and Security to check all the privacy-related settings. 🔒

Your data is yours, and others shouldn’t have access to it, let alone profit from it. 🙅

This is something we stand by, which is why we’ve always campaigned against tracking malpractices. We made our Sync service end-to-end encrypted for the same reason: to ensure that your data remains yours.

On the occasion of #dataprivacyweek, we’ll be posting content to help raise awareness about the importance of steering away from privacy-unfriendly habits.

chirpbirb,

@Vivaldi yo what about open sourcing your browser so we have no questions about the code that's being run on our machines, that'd be even more privacy conscious i think

Wanting privacy does not imply wrong-doing.

We all deserve to decide what we do and don’t share publicly — no one else should be able to make that decision for us.

Privacy is a human right, and directly affects other basic freedoms — such as free expression.
