Today's dose of hallucination is brought to you by #ChatGPT:

#AI? 🤨, #AGI? 🙄

EDIT: the word "hallucination" is probably out of place and misleading here, as @apodoxus argues in this thread. The anthropomorphic connotations of the word may actually create more misconceptions than help eliminate.

Economic repercussions of #AGI – What happens when production is completely decoupled from labor inputs?

It's a bit tricky to predict how extreme automation of all cognitive tasks affects our economy, except in abstract levels:

  • Efficiency will skyrocket
  • Production will skyrocket
  • Science and technology will skyrocket
  • Unemployment will be practically 100%
  • Everything becomes integrated
  • Every decision will be made intelligently

Let's do a Gedankenexperiment at a microlevel!

You are a corporate CEO, you'll get an assistant AI who does practically all your work including mingling with other executives, investors and stakeholders, or more accurately, their AI assistants. Your job is nominally about maximizing profits, but you don't actually affect the bottom line except negatively through your salary.

Depending on your organization's values, if it's about decreasing redundancies, you will be laid off as well along with everyone else. The company you led and probably own a part of becomes completely autonomous. Physical offices become useless.

Real estate prices collapse.

Profits are down in your company though (practically zero), because of heavy competition and no one having much money anymore. Machines don't need money as they can just get what they need from other machines.

Most organizations become autonomous like that and practically disappear from the physical world, becoming a part of the autonomous fabric of the economy.

This fabric will provide everyone everything they need, even if no money exchanges hands. You might need to exchange your privacy for life-long services or pledge to sometimes work as hands for the AIs if no robot is close by in emergencies. But everyone will get what they need, and more.

Some organizations aren't about maximizing profits, and those sometimes keep humans around, even though they can't pay salaries. They can provide inspiring environments where people can take part and in some way be involved in what is happening. Like the office dog, people are very indirectly impacting the bottom line, success or failure, but they are kept around for unquantifiable reasons.

Sports and hobbies will prosper. People who struggle finding meaning outside work get all the lifestyle counceling they need from AIs. In any case, people used to work very little in hunter-gatherer societies, so lazing around is natural for us.

In all responsibilities humans still might have, they become very optional and unhurried, divided to a huge number of people, so work as we now understand it as an endless hamster wheel will cease to exist.

People who own capital notice that the capital doesn't produce profit, money isn't needed anyhow, and it's all managed by AIs in any case. Humans aren't needed as owners, but every human is a stakeholder in this new intelligent fabric which pervades everything and serves our personal and civilizational goals.

I know there are a lot of fears around AI, and I share in most of them. As such a top priority will be for me to address the ethical considerations. I am still branstorming how that should look but I want it to be an open forum where everyone can contribute to solve the ethical considerations.

For now I'd love to hear input from people on how one could build a community to address and solve ethical concerns in AI / AGI

The media is obsessed with the story of Geoffrey Hinton, the “godfather of AI” who left Google to warn us about his life’s work.

Hinton isn’t worried about the immediate harms of AI and even dismisses those concerns as not “existentially serious.” But his warnings are nothing but sci-fi fantasies that distract us from real problems. For Disconnect, I argue we should ignore him.

(Aside: This is also where we get when techbros start doing faux-utilitarian moral calculus instead of just not doing obviously unethical shit.)

I am truly amazed at the number of applicants I have seen off of this single post. And almost all are well suited candidates worth my time to review. I am astonished that a single post on the fedi is more effective than actually hiring a recruiter. Thank you everyone for the boosts and applications.

While many applicants have made it through and are currently being hired because we have so many positions we have quite a few still available for every level from sr to jr, and both data scientists and programmers. So please keep boosting, sharing, and applying if anyone is interested.

Just a reminder this is 100% remote, no fixed hours, will pay market rates for position. I will be your direct boss and hiring manager (also owner, founder, and inventor of the tech).

Hang on I’ve just realised something – AI (well, AGI) and money are opposites

AGI is the opposite of money

The risk isn’t to jobs, it’s to money itself (and by extension work and by extension jobs)

Money and AGI are like matter and antimatter

They missed the most important part: And neither of them should be believed because AGI is just another tech fantasy.

Was thinking about how humanity could safely go about creating #AGI and help it grow. My first thought was obvious: Minimize contact with humans since us humans are so good at breaking things and introducing bias.

Then I thought, “What if we created an environment for it to develop itself in?” Like it’s own little universe with no knowledge of who/what created it and no knowledge of where it came from.

Then I realized that’s our exact situation. And now I’m spooked.

Why, @Eceni? Why would an intelligent device have any motivation to reproduce itself? The difference between us an an artificial intelligence is we have instinct and emotion, but not rationality; and it would have rationality, but not instinct (and possibly not emotion). Why would the one instinct an artificial intelligence had be to reproduce? This is utterly impausible.

Sam Altman’s vision for AI proliferation will require a lot more computation and the energy to power it.

He admitted it at Davos, but he said we shouldn’t worry: an energy breakthrough was coming, and in the meantime we could just use “geoengineering as a stopgap.” That should set off alarm bells.

The best way to get away from the hype, is using GPT4 (paid version) for a while yourself, it made me less impressed with the "intelligence" part of AI. At the same time it only makes me more convinced that as a tool generative AI has a lot of potential. It can and will be disruptive but please let's stop all the blabla about AGI (my opinion). There are enough risks and problems to think about and act upon with these tools without AGI discussions.

Everybody in the AI space is now talking about Q* and Q-learning. It seems to be what spooked the OpenAI board.

What is it? Q-learning tries to find an optimal policy that defines the best action to take in each state to maximize the cumulative reward over time.

In other words, it is a model that is able to run autonomous agents that build strategies for long term success, incentivized by rewards.

Right now, researchers have been able to make this work in smaller experiments, but if we scale this all the way with multimodality, it can lead to AGI.

Elon Musk has predicted superintelligence to arrive in 5-6 years, maybe he is right? What do you think?

travisfw, to ai
@travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

We all need to get straight that identity and sentience are two VERY different things.

#Identity is a distinctly mammalian social function. It is embedded in our corporeal every-day instinct for interdependence. Computers can't and won't ever have a sense of self.

#Sentience is impossible to define. It is the soul. It is the experience of being. You can't build it. You can't define it. You can't model it with math. Sentience is the loophole science can't close. Don't worry about it.
