Gone through 36 pages of the WIP, doing some editing today. Once I got the right document as apparently One Drive went wonky at some point and I've ended up with two versions. Very strange WIP. I usually have a good idea whether I like the writing or not (whether anyone else likes it is another issue, I may be totally at odds with what other people consider "good", but I usually know if I think it's good) but I don't with this WIP.

This week on Re-Creative, @ilanderz and I have a lively and fun conversation with the beloved Canadian humourist, Terry Fallis!

And the topic is one you'll love too: Paris in the 1920s! That important literary epoch has influenced Terry in his own writing, specifically in his latest novel, A New Season.

Discover how here:

So, does that mean that until you open the book it is in fact both read and unread? 🤔😜

#3GoodThings for #Tuesday

  1. My chicken bulgogi ramen, and super yummy apple + butterleaf lettuce salad for lunch. Also, cake.
  2. After nearly a month, the carpet I ordered finally arrived and is really pretty. I find I'm not ready to let go of my "Tower of the Rosewater Goblet" (bought with some of the proceeds of that story sale) carpet, though. So will have it cleaned up and will put it in "Costumes Room".
  3. Just glad to be home after a long day and in my pjs.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

No writing.

It's really strange. I have one chapter and the epilogue to write, and I know what I want to happen. Then I'll have to go through the story and sprinkle Christmas all over it. 🎄

But it's like I'm hibernating. Maybe I do need some rest, after pushing hard for two weeks.

At any rate, I'll get it done. I know I can.

I also sent out an invoice for my proofreading and uploaded a video to my new channel on MakerTube. A good day.

@Firlefanz It sounds like you do indeed need a rest - but do you need a rest from , or a rest from this particular WiP? Often it helps to set that project aside for a few days or weeks and work on something copletely different. I find this refreshes the mind, and the creativity and writing urge start gushing again. 😀

From my WIP:

"It’s not physically possible to make a human-sized suit of armor that can survive in combat with modern bots, no matter what you see in media. So I drove an armored walker that looked a lot like one of our heavy assault bots, like any sensible person going into combat, if “sensible person” and “voluntarily going into combat” aren’t actually mutually exclusive. The jury is still out on that." #Writing #WritingLife #SFF

Do you make up words for your books? If so, any tricks you’d care to share?

Depends on the genre. If fantasy then yes, with much gusto. No tips because everyone's different and my mind is a very strange place; my sense of humour even stranger. I also have a deep love for

Dear #WritingCommunity :

I'm looking for someone to read a chapter (3,700 words) from my women's fiction work in progress that I want to submit to a contest. I'd like someone with writing or editing experience in fiction to tell me what they think.

The contest closes Sunday, so I need comments by Saturday, 11/11.

Happy to trade comments on your WIP up to 5,000 words.

Whirlwind November. Don't know if I am coming or going. Got an article publication, an article acceptance (with minor revisions), and another article revisions required but prior to peer review. This on top of everything else + two medical appointments due. I'll clock in more regularly in December when I expect I will want to be more sloth-like. Wish me luck! 😬

ps: #Watermyth is also in do-or-die mode. Publication by December or bust!

Embodying Space in Hypertext Through Psychogeography: A Creative Writing Workshop
15 November 2023 – 25 February 2024

This creative writing workshop explores the ways in which spatiality and narrative intertwine in the production of hypertext writing projects. In the webinar that kickstarts this workshop, participants will be briefed on general ideas and theories revolving around games-writing, narratives, spatial theory, psychogeography and hypertext fiction.

Note: If you are local to the Klang Valley you may apply for the entire workshop (it's free of charge but the deadline is 11/11/2023!). If you are not but are interested, you may register for the webinar alone.

With people listing their recent books for awards consideration, the perennial debate reappears. Why bother writing if you know you won't win awards/sell millions?

84 men and 80 women qualified for the 100m sprint in the 2016 Olympics. Why bother when you know you won't run fast enough for gold? Because athletes focus on improving their personal best through training and honing their skills. This is a good mindset for writers - who aren't in any races anyway.

“Researching and writing this story about the Dyatlov Pass Incident was a bit like my more recent obsessive dive into the world of the Scottish witch hunts—the secret records, the mood of terror, the circling myths—but at the time I believed fiction was a better vehicle for arriving at a truth.”

14 years after the publication of my story about the Dyatlov Pass Incident, I consider the use of atrocity in fiction.
