"This points to the distinctive nature of philosophical reflection: it is less about observing the shadows that are projected onto the wall of the cave and more about becoming attuned to the background context in which the shadows are situated. To see our cave is to notice the unstated assumptions, conventions and habits that shape our observations and day-to-day interactions with the world."

@poetry @writingcommunity Every time I do this challenge, I learn so much about myself I feel like a whole new person. It’s as much about poems as it is about processing, grieving, accepting, celebrating, resting, learning, questioning, answering, feeling, befriending, and letting go.

@poetry @writingcommunity A few things I learned this year:

  1. Some poems are for the eye, others for the ear

  2. It's possible to create new, complete, surprising poems, even when revisiting the same topics and themes over and over

  3. Writing with peers and learning from mentors (both formal and informal) makes a huge difference

@poetry @writingcommunity I also noticed I was more drawn to lyricism and expressiveness this year, whereas last year I was more interested in storytelling, fantasy, and surrealism. I don't really have any insight as to why that is, it's just something I noticed. I think it's interesting how one's voice kind of expands and contracts over time.

Anyway, I'm going to need to take a bit of social media break now. This is truly the highlight of my year but it is exhausting!

Today’s prompt was to answer the Proust Questionnaire. Decided to follow the prompt exactly w/ one-line (reasonably lyrical) answers for each question & minimal editing after the fact. The result could maybe use a bit of shuffling/revising to be considered an actual poem, but I think it flows well & even makes a bit of surprising sense as-is.

Sometimes I feel like I’m supposed to be embarrassed posting poems with very basic rhymes like this but rhyme is truly what got me into poetry in the first place and it only seems childish if you’ve read too much Dr Seuss and not enough Robert Frost so just let me have this

Just a short poem for today (off-prompt). Whew, what an exhausting week!

I really enjoyed the style I tried yesterday (with spacial elements, to be read in multiple directions), so I did that again today and paired it with yesterday's NaPo prompt of naming the poem after a song.

Does anyone happen to know if there's a name for this style of poetry, with lots of spacial elements? Would appreciate it if you could let me know, I'd love to do more research on it.

Today’s prompt was to write a poem that starts with lots of concrete sensory details and then ends with something abstract, after “Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy’s Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota” by James Wright — it ended up being a super fun exercise in noticing!

Today I stumbled upon the phrase "Eppur si muove" ("and yet it moves"), tenuously attributed to Galileo after being forced to recant his claims that the Earth moves around the Sun to avoid being punished by the church.

The impact and rhythm of the phrase really inspired me, so I wrote a poem about it.

I absolutely adore this one!

I’m not quite done with it yet but “Several short sentences about writing” by Verlyn Klinkenborg is already one of the best books about writing I’ve ever read.

@bookstodon @writing (one of those books where every few pages you’ll find an idea that’s so simple and true and soul-rattling to hear it perfectly articulated that you have to just put it down and take a walk to decompress)

Today's Poetry Unbound newsletter was about bumping into friends: "The unexpected encounter — that is, I think, what writing can be, when we allow it to be."

It made me think about all the people I've briefly connected with on my travels, how sometimes you make eye contact with a complete stranger and feel certain you've met them, known them, loved them before.

Took that idea and ran with it today — really happy with this poem!

Sometimes when I get , I think it’s bc I’m trying too hard to write a pretty poem that cheers people up & makes the world seem bright & beautiful & worth suffering through the Human Condition™.

This has several lines I jotted down over the past week & then ignored bc I didn’t want to write something messy. Today I remembered it’s ok to be messy sometimes! So I just wrote what I needed to write, & I feel much better now.

Today's National Poetry Month prompt was to write a postcard-style "wish you were here" poem, so I wrote a letter to a friend who died last August.
