A new colony of #BeeOrchids located on the reserve at #WWTCastleEspie this week!
We’ve only ever had these beautiful #flowers in ones and twos but this year; twelve plants and counting 😎
Luckily they’re away from the paths so they won’t need extra protection and can bloom in peace 👍
Another lovely walk…another day playing with thunderstorms! A 15 km walk from Rennes-le-Chateau to Espéraza (where there’s a quirky market on a Sunday - great stop for lunch and gift shopping). ‘Weather’ was forecast for late pm but storm clouds rolled in just after lunch so we hoofed it back to Rennes. Some big fat raindrops, thunder rumbling and lightening flashing on the next hill over. But as we reached Rennes the sun came back out again and we enjoyed a beer on a sunny terrace.
The #calypsoorchids are coming up in the forest. They glitter in the dappled light. I kneel, prostrate myself before them. To gaze at their gorgeous lips. To behold their mottled depths. This is a kind of prayer.
This cluster of yellow miniature orchids are seen growing on the side of a tree deep in a moss-draped woodland wilderness. Wild orchids are found in many woodlands & arboreal forests across the country. Florida itself has over 100 wild species, 40 of which can be found in the Everglades National Park.
I was lucky to see Spiranthes spirales (the English name Autumn lady's tresses is very apt) again, probably the last #WildOrchids for me this year. I love the radial symmetry plus temporal asymmetry, you can see all developmental stages of the flowers at the same time (especially in the last image). #orchids#BloomScrolling#nature#photography@wildorchids
First quick Far East Gippsland winter orchid scout of the year only came up with a single nodding greenhood (Pterostylis nutans) in flower. No plants at all out at several sites which normally feature large colonies of greenhoods/helmets in July.
Local winter rainfall is so far down a fair bit compared to recent good post-fire seasons so could already be an issue heading into a potentially hot/dry spring and summer. Hopefully some better late-winter rainfall will pick things up but not seeing much on the forecast at the moment!
@silverdory Yay, you're back with new Australian orchid pictures! Sorry to hear it's looking too dry at the moment.
In case you're interested, there's now a group @wildorchids (followers get all posts that tag the group, which also helps with federation) and also the tag #WildOrchids .
Ich musste lange suchen dieses Jahr, aber dann hab ich doch noch ein rotes Waldvöglein gefunden. Die weißen sind bei uns in Nordhessen deutlich leichter zu finden.
I went on a short #orchid trip :) The first two are alpine species, Gymnadenia odoratissima and Nigritella rhellicani. The other two grow at lower elevations, Epipactis palustris in wet meadows and the more widespread Gymnadenia conopsea. #WildOrchids@wildorchids#nature#flowers#photography
Found a white Dactylorhiza incarnata (near Salzburg) and a pair of white Anacamptis coriophora (near Vienna). I like finding white versions of orchids 😀
A yellow orchid I found today within Salzburg city limits. I was looking out the car window near the top of Gaisbergspitze when I saw something yellow at the side of the road (between 100ds of yellow primulas and yellow comfrey, but it was a different shade of yellow!) Walked all the way back from the parking lot at the top and it really was an orchid!
The species is Orchis pallens and I had no idea it grows in this area. I now have the only inaturalist observation of it within the entire state of Salzburg.
