> WA Premier Roger Cook has withdrawn a bid to host the Commonwealth Games following Victoria’s withdrawal, after an Aboriginal Corporation demanded at least $3 trillion to host the games....
It's been a welcome diversion to watch the goat herd chowing down on overgrowth on the steep slope under the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge adjacent to NE 40th Street in Seattle. Check them out from the Burke-Gilman Trail overpass at 6th Avenue NE.
Registering my car with the state of #Washington was WAY easier than the Department of Licensing website made it out to be. It made me think I had to find a vehicle weigh station and all this other stuff. But in reality, it took maybe 15 minutes, and I already have my new plates!
The one remaining challenge: mounting a license plate on the front of my car.
Also: how to keep my apartment cool with wildfire smoke outside and no central AC inside? (All the fans, I guess.)
"It's still too cheap, and it needs to be even more expensive. And we are talking about tripling the price you are complaining about. Make oil black gold again. Are you feeling me? We need to tax/price the pump right out of profitability. The future will have a chance if gas today costs an arm and a leg."
Was considering a #Rivian but you can't test drive one on the state of #WA thanks to anti-capitalism laws written, no doubt, by dealership lobbyists. I'm not spending that much on an EV without test driving, and Space Karen can shove a #Tesla cybertruck up his ass sideways. I really don't want to support his shit, but Teslas do have the best charging network by far from my research.
What to do? I suppose drive down to Portland or up to Vancouver (the good one). Then no maintenance nearby?
Ukraine’s military reports that the Russians have “blown up” the Nova Kakhovka Dam upstream of Kherson.
It looks like it may have been full due to Russians holding back water (possibly to cause scarcity downstream). Full capacity is 18.1 km³ of water, or 3x the capacity of Shasta Lake and about half the capacity of Lake Mead.
Here's the latest variant picture for Western Australia.
The XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" clan (31%) is battling with XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" variant (23%) for dominance.
XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (20%) is growing quite rapidly. Be alert for conjunctivitis symptoms, which seem more common with that variant.
The variant mix in WA continues to be uniquely chaotic, reflecting it's situation as a global crossroads. Even WA residents who've been racking up regular reinfections are likely to meet globally obscure variants capable of overcoming their immunity.
The sample volumes seem representative up to May 12.
In a recently published Issues in Science and Technology article, @uwcip co-founders Emma Spiro and @katestarbird explore how decades-old research about how and why people share rumors is even more relevant today in a world with social media.
Spiro and Starbird write: "The study of rumors, which surged around World War II, is still very relevant."
In the article, Spiro and Starbird revisit the 1954 “Seattle windshield pitting epidemic,” an event where residents in WA reported finding unexplained pits, holes and other damage in their car windshields, leading to wide speculation about the cause. It’s “a textbook example of how rumors propagate: a sort of contagion, spread through social networks, shifting how people perceive patterns and interpret anomalies,” they write.
Here's the latest variant picture for Western Australia.
The XBB.1.5.* "Kraken" variant (20%) has continued to decline and has been overhauled by the XBB.1.9.* "Hyperion" clan (30%).
XBB.1.16.* "Arcturus" (11%) is growing a bit recently, but seems lower than in other Australian states.

Last month, approximately 700 high school students, plus teachers, librarians and other educators from across WA participated in three in-person MisinfoDay educational events hosted at UW Seattle, WSU Pullman and WSU Vancouver.
Information literacy skills aren't just for high school students. Adults can learn (or re-learn) important skills around factchecking and vetting sources and claims.
On Tuesday, April 25, 4-6 p.m. (Pacific), we're presenting, with our statewide partners at the WSU Murrow College of Communication, a special "Mini" MisinfoDay virtual event with a series of short talks and workshops.
